Catherine in a care home 😂

That is almost insulting to anybody over the age of 50. Let the woman enjoy at least 25 years of a nice retirement travelling around first!!!!

Davros · 06/02/2023 10:54

It would have been better if he hadn't set fire to himself there because it's Ryan's "happy home" he now realises. He seemed determined to set fire to himself at some point

HannaHat · 06/02/2023 10:54

LMAOOO 007 😂

JudgeJ · 06/02/2023 10:58

Also - who is Saga?? I keep seeing her mentioned here and have no idea who you're talking about!

Don't know if someone's already replied but Saga Noren was the police officer in The Bridge, the brilliant Scandi noir programme. Allegedly she has Aspergers and is incapable of personal relationships. Well worth watching if it's around somewhere, especially Series 1.

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 06/02/2023 10:58

Didn't TLR say he had gone there to kill CC, but that he'd seen (from the albums) what a good life Ryan had been given, and it was at this point he decided not to kill her?

Amazing final episode!

Sidge · 06/02/2023 10:58

I was enthralled right to the end then just felt a bit deflated. 😕

I didn’t want shoot-outs and hostages, or ridiculous LOD style nonsense, but it left me feeling flat. Maybe that’s just because it’s ended and I’ve loved it!

He did.

The ending was amazing! Loved it. Perfect!

I’m rewatching it this morning:

  1. the petrol tank magically moves - its in the footwell when TLR realises he is going to be murderer. It’s back in the boot by the time he gets to Catherine.
  2. when he kills the three in the field he replays in his head Ryan saying the last place he is allowed to be is anywhere near home. I think TLR goes there to kill himself not Catherine (the tension we feel with him peering in is just pure drama), but he’s gone to what he thinks is an empty house to be near to Ryan and see his life, and finally appreciate it’s been a good life.
I’ll be back with more as I go.

Point 1, yes, I thought that too, it did seem to move around quite a bit! When he entered the basement of the house didn't he conceal it in the garden rather than take it in?

Zippedydoo123 · 06/02/2023 11:05

Great thread.

PrincessScarlett · 06/02/2023 11:06

Tommy tells Catherine he was going to burn her house down (with him burning to death in the process) but the photos and Ryan's room changed his mind as he realised everything Catherine had done for Ryan and that he had a good life.

Maybe SW can get together with Richard Osman to write it, he seems to specialise in that type of thing!

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 06/02/2023 11:13

I did find it quite touching when Tommy was in Ryan's bedroom and he saw it was cosy and lovely and just an ordinary teenage lad's bedroom filled with all the mementoes of a happy childhood.

PrincessScarlett · 06/02/2023 11:18

That moment when Tommy realises how important Catherine is to Ryan is a huge development in his character. He goes from being a selfish psycho with no empathy or emotion to actually putting someone else first for the first time in his life. Hugely powerful and fantastic acting from James Norton.

Everything he never had.
Definitely part of sealing the deal in realising that Ryan was love and cared for and he couldn't offer him anything near it.

I'm grateful it finished in the way it did - I didn't need to see neckbeard or pfizer get hauled off as they were just parts to the story, the main event was always going to be Catherine and TLR - and the two shot worked so brilliantly - I almost didn't want back up to arrive because I wanted the verbal sparring to go on!

Huge thanks to @Blondeshavemorefun for all the threads!

Where is Queensbury to where Catherine house is

Deadringer · 06/02/2023 11:32

I think TLR's change of heart is realistic. If he was swanning off to Marbella with Ryan he absolutely would have tortured and killed Catherine, and felt justified in doing so. But he was dying, at looking at Ryan's home and relationship with her through the eyes of a man who was leaving his son behind. He saw what Ryan had, basically everything he never had, and he didn't want to take it away from him.

foxlover47 · 06/02/2023 11:35

I think Tommy being in Ryan's bedroom was a huge masterpiece in the script , absolutely hit home what that meant to Tommy

In real life? About 20 mins drive away

Rhondaa · 06/02/2023 11:36

'I think she was rude just walking off when they were all there for a leaving do'

Think they'd had it. Cake eaten, folk dwindling. You get the feeling it was over hence her collecting her belongings.

Bit at the beginning when thugs were in living room and curtain billowed as the door was broken down was a bit scary, thought it was Darius The Wee'er but luckily for them just the cops.

Also liked the bit where Royce's head popped up at t'window Shock.

All so brilliantly done, no silly chases or kidnapping just a very sad and brutal ending but with our Catherine unharmed. Except for her soft furnishings. Poor Tommeh, what a testament to SW's writing and JN's acting that you can have some conflicting sympathy for him.

Plus as Winnie calls she never goes to get her cake

I was a bit disappointed yesterday when I watched it, but on reflection it was a brilliant ending. If Catherine would have still been consumed by rage and hatred even with TLR gone it would have tortured her, as it would have if she would have been the one to kill him. The writing was brilliant, to feel empathy at some points for this vile man and for Catherine to actually let him get on with it actually as a sweet release rather than punishment was just amazing.

I also liked that Ryan wasn't present, so although he'd still be affected he wouldn't be disturbed and possibly on a path like his father. Some elements I feel were rushed, like what really was the point of the pharmacist/teacher storyline other than the comments at the end about the girls having a grandmother and her giving info on the pharmacist? Although I guess perhaps this was just to show when we leave a job the cogs keep turning, things don't stop when we go.

The final series was my least favourite overall though.

Pansypotter123 · 06/02/2023 11:37

I was pleased with the ending and can overlook the lack of tidying up of the loose ends such as Faizal and Rob. This was CC and TLR's story after all.

I would, however, have liked to have seen how TLR was treated at the hospital?

Was there ever going to be a chance he might have survived his injuries: the stab wound, the overdose and the setting himself on fire? Or was he always going to just be "kept comfortable" until the inevitable happened?

Would he have had a police guard?

I know there was no need for this to be shown as part of the plot but I'm still wondering what would happen in these circumstances!
