If he 'loved' Becky how did he never try and contact her while out away the first time? Or know she'd died? They'd have had mates in common so clearly he never asked after her!

I don't think the nasty teacher was abusing his own kids as someone suggested earlier, he was presumably into teenage boys, which is a different thing entirely.

He groomed Jo

Happysalley · 05/02/2023 23:17

I really liked how the emotionally charged dialogue had the occasional light hearted line thrown in there, like "what yer 'aving fer yer tea?' And then a few moments in the final conversation between Tommy amd Catherine. It made it seem so realistic.

Ladybug14 · 05/02/2023 23:02

TRL proved, in those scenes with Catherine, the delusional mind of the psychopath

And when he stumbled around her house, I kept thinking he would get blood on things and mess them up. He blundered around in pain, spoiling things; perfect metaphor for how he damaged people through his own damaged self.

DH is from that area and he loved 'You stopping then?' from Clare as a way to end the big rift. He said that's just how it would be done. No emotional speeches speeches.

This is the bit that got me. Just like my in laws. No big speeches, very low key. The hug at the end was so out of character but desperately wanted and needed that it broke me.

Calmdown14 · 05/02/2023 23:18

I think the lack of other characters was deliberate.

It was Claire who was there for Catherine and Ryan after Becky's death. The photo albums and Ryan got that message through. Catherine has always seen it that she propped up Claire in her recovery but she didn't give credit to the amount Claire did for her.

The two grannies, the physical holding her up, the crochet blanket all showed us that.

Similarly the very violent TLR reminded us of what he is. We feel sorry for his shit life but ultimately his view of the world (and the forgiveness comment) is totally skewed. His feelings for Ryan are genuine but he doesn't really understand love. Ryan provides a window to more normal feelings but he's too damaged.

And I don't think it was the end of the policing career that meant Catherine lost the haunted look but the realisation Ryan is not TLR. It was a big contrast to the end of series two as she looks at him running on that hill..

Loved it!

Tigresswoods · 05/02/2023 22:37

@martinisforeveryone the gravestone doesn't mention Ryan to protect him.

Protect him from what?

HRTQueen · 05/02/2023 23:19

It was absolutely brilliant

and very moving at the end

PriamFarrl · 05/02/2023 23:22

Initially I was disappointed but thinking back on it, it worked. No big twist, no big show down. The fact that the policing was going to go on after she left, she wasn’t some superstar cop. It was more realistic.

And there was a copper outside the house. When TLR parked up there was a policeman walking by.

FlyRobinFly · 05/02/2023 23:22

Why did the vision of Becky tell Catherine to go home? Maybe she knew subconsciously TLR would probably go there and she wanted to face up to it once and for all?

MrsAvocet · 05/02/2023 23:25

I thought it was clever.
The hideously violent scenes at the beginning reminded us of what TLR is capable of, given we haven't actually seen him do anything more violent than thump a couple of guards in the courtroom scenes in the previous episodes and he'd been presented as rather more human in this series.
Then after all the tension around Ryan, he just spills the beans straight away. No plots or second thoughts which was a bit of a surprise.
And the range of emotions in the kitchen was superb. I liked how just as we were really starting to feel some sympathy for TLR, and possibly even Catherine was too, she relates all his horrific previous crimes and jolts us back to reality. I did keep wondering if he was going to ask her for forgiveness, as she said in a previous episode that she would forgiven him if he asked her to, probably confident that that was never going to happen. I thought it came close a couple of times and I was wondering what she would say, but then it was spun around and he said that he forgave her, showing that he in fact had no insight into his actions at all.
I agree the very final scenes were slightly contrived, but almost casually dropping the details about Faisal in at the end was very Catherine and reminded me of how she explained everything about the skeleton in the lake in episode 1 of this series.
I hope Ryan passes his GCSEs !

NashvilleQueen · 05/02/2023 23:25

I think the party had been going on for some time by the point we saw it. The cake had been half eaten. So she had been there but left before the end.

Absolutely this. It didn’t need extra scenes with Rob or Faisal, they were B plots to the A storyline of Catherine, TLR, Claire and Ryan.

I feel sad for the people who were underwhelmed - genuinely sad, I don’t meant that in a patronising way. I enjoyed it so much, I want everyone else to share the satisfaction I’m feeling at what was, IMO, a perfect ending. I was nervous beforehand after being disappointed in the LOD “H” denouement after all that hype, but I needn’t have worried because this was so much better.

fairypeasant · 05/02/2023 23:28

It was perfect. I'd have liked an ending where she hugged Ryan.

BoreOfWhabylon · 05/02/2023 23:29

Very satisfactory.

BAFTAs all round.

Looking forward to future seeies following Ryan's police career.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 05/02/2023 23:29

www.gq-magazine.co.uk/culture/article/happy-valley-finale-james-norton-interview James Norton gives his view of TLR.

FWIW, I thought that ending was spot on.

HannaHat · 05/02/2023 23:30

Glad you said not patronisingly BenCoopersSupportWren 😭😂

It just stretched credibility a bit too far for me. I thought the acting was great though.

ancientgran · 05/02/2023 23:30

MaureenSowerbuttsCardi · 05/02/2023 22:55

Me neither such a let down. Nothing happened! And where was Anne? And Daniel? I wanted to see Faisel get his comeuppance.
The scene in the kitchen was laughable. I know TLR hasn't really matured beyond his teenage years but I expected more from Catherine.

Daniel didn't even get a photo album.

XanaduKira · 05/02/2023 23:31

I thought it was perfect! Loved it.

Really hope that SW writes a spin off series with Anne in CID & Ryan on the beat!

Snugglepiggy · 05/02/2023 23:32

Just read James Nortonsinterview with British GQ and his thoughts about playing TLR .Very interesting and he points out HV was always all about those conversations around the kitchen table. And in the end the final confrontation between TLR and C was that rather than wild stunts .Just the two of them. It's worth reading.

Southeastdweller · 05/02/2023 23:33

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 05/02/2023 22:37

There were a million and one things they could have done, but instead there were no twists, no turns, no jaw on floor moments the series is known for, no shocks, no surprises, just the most vanilla, nondescript, 'meh' ending possible.

Totally underwhelming.

I completely agree. It was so predictable apart from TLR’s ludicrous comments of how he’s grateful for Catherine for giving Ryan a nice upbringing. I just didn’t but it, despite the brilliant performance from James Norton.

So Faisal got away with killing poor Jo.

I enjoyed the series overall but it wasn’t up to the same standard as series 1 and 2 and was crazily hyped by most of the media. I think Sally Wainwright took on too many stories to do a six part series justice and none were really as satisfying as they could have been by the end.

Shimmyshimmycocobop · 05/02/2023 23:35

I loved it, I really needed a good ending for Catherine and this was the best way to do it in that she felt pity for TLR despite herself and what he had done.

That means she could be totally free of him before driving away to the Himalayas. I will miss it but feel completed by the ending. <sad I know>

MStone38 · 05/02/2023 23:36

ladymacbeth · 05/02/2023 23:05

he was going to kill him all along.

Then why break him out? Not exactly hard to get someone killed in prison if you're a mafia boss!

Because inside it’s murder.

outside, he just disappears….

Berrystraw · 05/02/2023 23:37

Is it just me who sees an ex public schoolboy putting on a Yorkshire accent in TLR?

Another one totally underwhelmed here. Shocking special effects for the fire as well, looked like the work experience kid had been given that job.

HannaHat · 05/02/2023 23:38

I've rewatched series 1 & 2 before but I can't see myself watching the 3rd again. I think on reflection this whole season hasn't been up to par, even though I've been glued to it.
