The only thing I can’t work out is why Darius helped TLR in the first place. Obviously after the arrest of Tweedledum and Tweedledee they decided they needed to get rid of TLR but why help him escape and hide away initially?

Was it a deal that they help him escape to prevent him dropping Darius in it in court?

Darius was never helping TLR.

he was going to kill him all along.

why spend tens of thousands helping someone escape who can single hand idly bring down your entire crime empire when you can just kill him and be done.

soon as TLR told the lies about who killed reservoir guy he was a dead man walking. Done everything useful that he could, only represented a liability for Darius.

no way Darius ever ever planned to let him walk away. Too big a risk

Poke · 05/02/2023 23:02

Just brilliant. The perfect ending.

My head’s spinning. Thank you Sally Wainwright.

Alphabetasoul · 05/02/2023 23:02

Could have been longer would have liked to see the teachers trail and see fasail get his comeuppance. Catherine should have tazered TLR when he picked up the matches .

FlyRobinFly · 05/02/2023 23:02

I can’t see another theory for Poppy’s coat other than a trauma response and emotional neglect from Joanna. Joanna looked so lost and spaced out, she probably gets the girls in from school and then leaves them too it, neglecting even the small parts of parenting like saying “Take your coat of, Poppy’ and hanging it up. Any theory is ridiculous. She’s going to school in that coat and no doubt has to take it off in the classroom or for PE etc. If she was hiding drugs in there or had bruises they would’ve been noticed by a teacher.

jocktamsonsbairn · 05/02/2023 23:02

When she went to the graveyard I had expected a mention of 'mother to Ryan' added to the gravestone but there wasn't. Kind of expected more.

Ladybug14 · 05/02/2023 23:02

TRL proved, in those scenes with Catherine, the delusional mind of the psychopath

Aftertheharvest · 05/02/2023 23:03

I thought the lack of other family members (Richard, Daniel, Ann, Neil) was intentional as ultimately it was Catherine and Claire that were there for Ryan in his formative years, who helped him be a ‘good lad’ not the others.

Maranello · 05/02/2023 23:04

Absolutely outstanding.

HV really isn't known for its big plot twists. It's about the characters. And we got that distilled to its essence: I didn't mind that there was no Ann or Daniel or Richard or Neil or Nev because it was Catherine and TLR and Ryan and Clare and that was the point.

Poppy's coat was a protective gesture to show her fear, I never expected a big revelation there.

Oh, and I rewound the end to pause on the text Catherine got from Mike Taylor to say TLR was dead. Above it he'd messaged her to ask when she was off to the Highlands. Not Himalayas (yet)! So I'm sure Ryan will be just fine.

And the double de clutch was a red herring

The chats we have had about that 😂😂

The double declutch was when Catherine borrowed Alison’s old car, and had nothing to do with Catherine’s new one?

She didn’t need to tell Ryan she loved him. Everything she ever did for him proved it.

And she called him love all the time.

She's of the generation that doesn't need to be throwing casual 'Love you' around, they show it by actions, the modern constantly declaring 'love you' really diminishes the words.

Clawdy · 05/02/2023 23:05

I don't think the nasty teacher was abusing his own kids as someone suggested earlier, he was presumably into teenage boys, which is a different thing entirely.

Supersimkin2 · 05/02/2023 23:05

Loved how slow this ep was compared to the frenzy of the chase for every previous moment of all three series.

That and the Very White Sock did it for me.

Better than the Brontes. JN and SL MUST get their BAFTAs.

Testina · 05/02/2023 23:05

@ladymacbeth “the chief congratulated her on getting Darius on her last day. How did she? All we know is TLR says Darius killed the guy in the cement but that's not going to get him out away?”

We know that TLR went into a coma and died, but we don’t know that he didn’t give a statement at some point - at least, said it out loud to others, given he was insistent it was said.

I think we’re allowed to assume that Darius’s brother Zjeliko being murdered by TLR (his blood all over him) and Dumb & Dumbee being arrested will be enough to make all the links that end up with Darius. The van he drove with have both his and TLR’s DNA, fallen hair for example.

The money in Dumb & Dumber’s will link back to the drugs, Pfizer will cough to their names cos he’s weak…

Beetroot Man’s house may be owned by Darius… even really “good” criminals make mistakes.

No guarantees, but I think it’s a fair assumption that plenty will link back to Darius and we’re allowed to decide ourselves if that means it’ll stick.

ladymacbeth · 05/02/2023 23:05

he was going to kill him all along.

Then why break him out? Not exactly hard to get someone killed in prison if you're a mafia boss!

Redebs · 05/02/2023 23:05

That was superb!

I love how, when she asked what would happen to the two little girls, the detective replied, "They've got a Grandmother". Perfect!

And the way it moved forwards to put Ryan at the centre of everything was genius. It was a real triumph of love and compassion.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 05/02/2023 23:06

Highly satisfactory ending.

It would be nice if Catherine told Ryan she loves him, but he knows she does anyway.

How do we know Ryan wasn't in the landrover at the end?

Series 4 - Catherine and Ryan overland to Kathmandu.

Series 5 - Ryan joins the police and Granny is on hand for occasional sage advice.

Much too tidy for SW I fear!

hellobethyname · 05/02/2023 22:55

I felt that too . He just was so fucked up - it was so sad . I actually do believe he loved Becky too. I was sad for him . I love Catherine, I'm in the same job and if I was half the cop she is I'd be happy ! ( In my head i am as I appear to kiss the command team off 😂)

I'm with @Testina I don't think he loved anyone, he wasn't capable of love. He'd rewritten the narrative while he was locked away and he just wanted to own Ryan at first, to have something of his own, which he'd never had before.
His dying words as it were, seemed to demonstrate pride and love for Ryan, but if he'd lived it would've twisted when Ryan didn't do what TLR wanted him to do.

beachcitygirl · 05/02/2023 23:08

Utterly underwhelming ending to one of the best shows ever.
Sarah Lancashire is phenomenal actor but overall I thought it was lazy & meh.

JudgeJ · 05/02/2023 23:09

IClaudine · 05/02/2023 22:44

Yes! Love this idea.

No, Saga doesn't do mates does she?

SwishSwishBisch · 05/02/2023 23:09

I loved it, and from reading the expectations of those who’ve said they didn’t rate it I’m just glad none of you are script writers because it was perfect.

upinaballoon · 05/02/2023 23:10

@Redebs , yes, lovely when she was told that the motherless girls have a grandma, well, two.

Redebs · 05/02/2023 23:10

UncleHerbie · 05/02/2023 22:50

I loved the fact that in epi one, series one, Catherine used a fire extinguisher on a young fella threatening to set himself alight (except he forgot he was doused in petrol and lit a cigarette!)

This time there was no extinguisher, just a hand crocheted blanket to put out the fire - this must have been made from wool, otherwise the flames would’ve melted the fibres

Brilliant TV

When Tommy was in the narrow boat he threatened to burn himself and Ryan, but Catherine foamed him with a fire extinguisher.
I thought she was going to do the same again this time.

Testina · 05/02/2023 23:10

Clawdy · 05/02/2023 23:05

I don't think the nasty teacher was abusing his own kids as someone suggested earlier, he was presumably into teenage boys, which is a different thing entirely.

I’m not expert on sex offenders, but I believe it’s not uncommon for them to have an “age range”, albeit that could be wide. We know from Joanna’s parents that she met Rob when still at school - setting an age range, plus the abuse of a powerful position. I don’t think knocking pupils down to then build them up has to be the sexually abusive side of him - there was control as well as sex. I don’t think there’s any reason to expand that back to his own children and especially to that wide an age range.

All the coat shows, is a traumatised child in a deeply abusive household.

martinisforeveryone · 05/02/2023 23:11

ladymacbeth · 05/02/2023 23:05

he was going to kill him all along.

Then why break him out? Not exactly hard to get someone killed in prison if you're a mafia boss!

Because it would be easier to trace it back if he was killed inside?

FlyRobinFly · 05/02/2023 23:12

Catherine saying TLR has a toddler brain is perfect. He reminded me of a toddler in the scene in the kitchen with Catherine, the immature nonsense he was churning out. Anything Catherine said about him, he responded with (in slightly more words) “No, you!”. You could see that he was struggling to even understand what Catherine was saying most of the time and keep up with the conversation.
