I Actually think it was the perfect ending. Anyone else dying would have been to over dramatic, and the Faisal / Rob stuff would have been too much to have tied up in any kind of neat way. Faisal was always a bit part anyway.

I agree! Less is more and shows real skill in choosing where the focus of the drama is. Loved it !

martinisforeveryone · 05/02/2023 22:30

I don't think we needed to see Rob or the pharmacist, policing goes on without Catherine.

The scene with Claire where she so wanted to go to Catherine but wasn't brave enough was beautifully done.

There's tea in the pot, but you won't want it. Catherine pours tea. And if you know, you know. That was the start of the thaw.

Testina · 05/02/2023 22:31

007DoubleOSeven · 05/02/2023 22:28

@Testina true, I just think that a couple of final shots of the other ne'er-do-wells would have wrapped it up with stronger closure

I think it was better to keep all the final shots on Catherine.

I thought the indecent images on Ron’s phone were a bit pointless. Oh actually - I’m going to change my mind even as I type! I suppose with Pfizer going down for murder, it would be hard to prosecute Rob for the older assaults on Joanna - so that gives a charge to know he’s getting his desserts too.

foxlover47 · 05/02/2023 22:31

What epic screen writing though to make us feel
Empathy towards TLR because we know he had a absolute hell childhood , was never loved or shown love , in His messed up world he loved Ryan and he thought he loved Becky too
All that damage he caused everyone yet deep down he was craving to be Ryan's dad
I think it showed a lot to the nature v nurture debate too

UrsulaPandress · 05/02/2023 22:31

She didn’t need to tell Ryan she loved him. Everything she ever did for him proved it.

And she called him love all the time.

Badger1970 · 05/02/2023 22:31

Hmm feels decidely underwhelming.

watcherintherye · 05/02/2023 22:31

007DoubleOSeven · 05/02/2023 22:22

Ryan knows how much she loves him, and Claire, and he knows how much he loves them. This episode it was all about how much Catherine loves him, letting go of the ghost of his psycho dad and realising how Ryan is never going to go down the wrong road. Lots of lovely little touches to show this- like his photo on her desk 🥰

I cried for TLR when he was talking to Catherine...can't believe he forgave her! Brilliant writing and brilliant understanding of the nuances of humans, their experiences and perspectives. What a way to drive home how damaged tlr was from his upbringing.
Their dialogue together was phenomenal!
And yes "we had another bit of a tussle" - best line!

Think it needed a scene if faisal with his family,no idea of what was about to hit him

I couldn’t tell whether he was relieved or scared when Faisal’s assistant told him about the arrest of the two who were working for Darius and blackmailing him. Did he think he was off the hook, or that they would drop him in it?

foxlover47 · 05/02/2023 22:32

I would also love to know what the ending was she wrote that SL asked to be changed

60mins · 05/02/2023 22:32

Awesome tv!! Wow! Bit bloody fog Le bit still brilliant

60mins · 05/02/2023 22:32

Bloody!!!!

cilary · 05/02/2023 22:33

I thought it was a great last episode. Loved the sunglasses on the way out echoing the very start. Very well done.

Yes, truly brilliant.

And when Catherine confronted him about his threat to cut women's tits off "I didn't mean it!" Like a naughty school boy - totally deluded, no concept whatsoever of how evil he is!

SW if you'd reading this- you're brilliant!

watcherintherye · 05/02/2023 22:33

I was surprised that she called TLR ‘love’, even sarcastically.

And that my friend, is what they call

Closure!

👌🏻 Nice

NashvilleQueen · 05/02/2023 22:34

It's a bit like the BBC said - OK, fine, go on then, you're quite good you can have an extra 10 minutes and that's it - and then SW had to chop the last episode down, prioritising the brilliant tlr and Catherine scene

Stingy bbc

Do you honestly think the bbc would have minded if SW had said she wanted seven episodes or an extra ten mins? I mean it's one of the most watched programmes of recent years so I suspect it would have been fine.

butterpuffed · 05/02/2023 22:34

Thought it was going to be full of complicated twists and turns but it wasn't, it was better than that Also all the theories about Catherine dying were wrong too, good .

Haven't seen anything this good for years .

Joystir59 · 05/02/2023 22:34

Absolutely heart stoppingl heartful wonderful TV. Thank you Sally Wainwright and all of the cast.

007DoubleOSeven · 05/02/2023 22:34

@watcherintherye I don't know, I think I need to watch it again !

Her Dad is a predator

Was being a wee bit tongue in cheek there

Lottapianos · 05/02/2023 22:35

'Bit of a damp squib, but this entire series hasn't really matched up to the first two, so I'm not surprised the ending was a bit underwhelming'

I agree really. Some great bits in the final episode, and great acting as always, but too much was tied up too neatly.

I know she was in her truck at the end, do we think she's actually off to the Himalayas?

MichaelAndEagle · 05/02/2023 22:35

colouringindoors · 05/02/2023 22:26

I read that in TLR voice/accent.

foxlover47 · 05/02/2023 22:35

@007DoubleOSeven yeah this!! as if it was just a harmless throw away angry remark !
He couldn't fathom
That she thought he'd been having Ryan on could he , that was all the truth for him the visits etc he did want Ryan in his life
I'm
Glad he told about Darius too

ign0re · 05/02/2023 22:35

I thought it was perfectly done and writer stayed true to herself.

I think the way they tied up the Faisal storyline was perfect, we didn’t need to see all that, it was the b storyline and Catherine’s character wrapped it up nicely, I think with the indecent images maybe even being a nod to the daughter issues too perhaps?

anyways brilliantly done, very satisfied with that ending!

dapsnotplimsolls · 05/02/2023 22:36

I like to think there's a parallel universe somewhere where Catherine Cawood and Saga Noren are kicking arse together.
