Jo had said to Faisal that neckbeard liked to pick a pupil, break their spirit and then try to become their best pal and saviour

ilkleymoorbartat · 23/01/2023 12:06

@StrychnineInTheSandwiches agreed

The other thing i think is unanswered was how the teacher Hepworth had that sudden turn around with Ryan. That chat they had when he was saying he had an unhappy marriage was weird and unfinished i thought.

Or is that just down to Hepworth u-turning because of how Catherine dealt with him in their school meeting?

Or him hearing his dad was in prison. Maybe Neckbeard is dodgy and knows TLR somehow.

This is what he does, as explained by Joanna. He picks a student to bully and break so that he can build them back up again and be their saviour. He had carefully selected Ryan because he assumed, living with Granny with no parents on the scene, that he was an easy target.

ilkleymoorbartat · 23/01/2023 12:07

Ah yes good point @StrychnineInTheSandwiches so probably just that.

ilkleymoorbartat · 23/01/2023 12:07

Thanks @Rollergirl11 I'd totally forgotten that.

Joanna told Faisal that this is Neckbeard's tactic. He finds troubled kids with difficult home lives and bullies them for a while to reduce their self esteem then he builds them up again by showering them with attention. Ryan is clearly one of his targets.

I think the little girl staring like that was to make us thing Jo was laid there on the floor. Maybe she was looking in the kitchen hoping her mum was there as she hadn't seen her for over a day.

What will neckbeard do with her body? Not the right thing and report it to the police. I did think when he bashed into the back of Pfizer's car that she was in there which was why he was being so ultra calm. I'm guessing he took some pills to chill him out, unless now Jo is out of the picture and as far as he can tell he is out of the picture, he just feels that particular stress has gone? I think his daughters video of Neckbeard will be going viral around the school.

I was thinking last night, and I wondered if Clare might be the one Tommy goes for. She is very much for forgiveness and might end up in a situation with him where she thinks she can help him. Maybe he has some drugs which he either tempts her with or just injects her with like he did Ann.

Speaking of, what was up with Ann in that episode? Is it just the stress of working with cid or TLR?

I think Richard realised TLR had someone in the viewing area when he was turning around and looking and then smiled, he just couldn't see who at. It wasn't until they were leaving that he saw Ryan. I would have thought he would have seen him in there as the seating was in a curve, but the people sat next to Ryan conveniently moved forward when he looked that blocked any view of Ryan.

Why are the ODG so keen to get TLR out of prison? Was he one of their top dealers do badders back in the day?

Im glad Joyce isn't a baddie. I wondered if she was seeing if CCs diary was on the screen to try and work out her plans for doing the retirement gift.

So much to cover in the next two episodes. I think the ODG will just keep on going, there are too many people higher up involved, maybe even in the police shock horror.

When she mentioned the collection I thought she was maybe contacting people asking them to donate, thats why she looked at the screen?

I’m wondering if TLR heads for the teachers house for a bit of mild duffing up on behalf of Ryan. And catches the teacher in the middle of trying to deal with the suitcase/body. And then realises in his twisted way that he could have more “fun” with the teacher if he helped him and then had him under his thumb.

Not worked out where it could go from there. I thought it would be ironic if TLR ultimately got done for the wife’s murder, but surely the forensics evidence would clearly put time of death while TLR was still in prison.

Maybe a "I'll help you if you get me Ryan?" situation

fairypeasant · 23/01/2023 12:14

She looked at the screen so that later on, when the parents came to the desk, she would remember the name, and get the parents seen by Catherine.

This is face value story telling! It's the characters that make it special. We can see the plot, and that's ok. We know broadly what will happen, it's about HOW and WHO.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 23/01/2023 12:15

I think neckbeard will go down for his wife's murder and Faisal will fall foul of a drug gang.

the80sweregreat · 23/01/2023 12:16

In which episode did Jo tell Faisal about the grooming ?

fairypeasant · 23/01/2023 12:16

And we're been told Neckbeard's motivation/part in the plot. Whispery Meg in the last series- it wasn't a shock she was in with TLR. We knew that. With HV, the audience knows who's who, and what's going on. Exactly how they behave and how it all pans out isn't known.

Neckbeard is your common or garden narc. He homes in on the vulnerable ones, then 'breaks them', then makes them his special project, to get his narc supply. He won't be in with the gangsters, or TLR.

the80sweregreat · 23/01/2023 12:16

I think it was the second episode. When they were walking in the park and she was trying to persuade/ threaten him into funding a flat for her

Supersimkin2 · 23/01/2023 12:18

Who’s Tweedledee marrying?

TLR unlikely fiancé, but not the most unlikely candidate.

the80sweregreat · 23/01/2023 12:20

Oh yes, I'd forgotten the blackmail over the flat
Which is why he wanted to kill Rob, of course
Thank you

ShaunaTheSheep · 23/01/2023 12:27

Re the suitcase - he probably went to look inside to see if she'd taken a smaller nesting suitcase that lives inside the bigger one.

He looked genuinely shocked at the weight of it.

HannaHat · 23/01/2023 12:28

I think Neil's character was evident in series 2, we didn't know if he was the shady one killing the women at first.
I don't actually believe Neckbeard is in with an OCG though.

funnelfan · 23/01/2023 12:28

WBDogCatMouse · 23/01/2023 12:13

Maybe a "I'll help you if you get me Ryan?" situation

Yes! Even something simple like tell him to turn up at a certain time/place for football practice. I do think it’s heading towards an abduction of Ryan, it’s what TLR does.

regarding Fisal, I wonder if he’ll get overconfident and think he can somehow deal with Tweedledum and Tweedledee, but not realising there’s several more layers of much scarier people above them he’ll get either arrested or dedded. I also think, like LoD, the people at the top are going to get off scott free, and Darius Knezevic will win the election.

the80sweregreat · 23/01/2023 12:31

He knew the suitcase didn't belong in the garage. I agree, he probably expected to see a different smaller one in there , or her clothes etc
What will he do I wonder ?

And her parents confirmed it last night when they said he'd been her teacher and she crashed out of her A levels to marry him.

spiderlight · 23/01/2023 11:17

I wonder whether Neckbeard will try to get rid of the body but will be pulled over by the police because of a damaged light or something from the bump with Faisal and they'll find her in his car. Or is that too reminiscent of the van being pulled over for a tail-light when Ann was in the back in S1?

I like this. Often in life things replicate.

Kaftanesque · 23/01/2023 12:57

I can forgive any plotholes this series for those two sublime scenes with Catherine and Clare at the cafe alone.Superb acting. And LOD has stretched credulity at times and still is one of the best ever dramas.
The PP who said working class actors don't get much of a look in now there are posh boys like JN.I think that's why it's so good someone established like JN and a writer like SW champion Rhys Connah. He's from Oldham and brought up by a single mum in a terraced house.Very different from an Ampleforth education.
And yes agree with the comments about JN as Prince Andre in War and Peace. The whole production was brilliant.I've tried to find it to rewatch.Has anyone any idea if it's available anywhere ?.Also loved him in McMafia.Another Bond type role.

HannaHat · 23/01/2023 13:04

The actor who plays Ryan is actually from Heywood (more Rochdale than Oldham).
