Anyone watching? Dr smug unfortunately appears fully recovered from the train crash.

And me! That annoying quavery voice spouting platitudes........

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 14/01/2023 08:44

Poor Vanessa Redgrave,I doubt she's ever been called annoying and quavering before 😱🤣

Maybe she is doing that voice on purpose but it's getting on my nerves and adds nothing to the drama.

That was an uncomfortable watch for me.

I’m growing to like the fibby nun. And her marmalade would have been a lucky find in this house today.

Trixie’s grunting and screaming and floury coupon was a nonsense. My bouche was far from amused.

I’d have been right tempted to make better use of that stick if I were sister MJ.

Nurse Crane is just ruddy lovely. Every person having a struggle needs a Phyllis.

In fact everyone just needs a Phyllis.

SoupDragon · 16/01/2023 22:57

Fibby Nun was amazing in this episode.

ArcaneWireless · 17/01/2023 00:04

Fibby Nun was amazing in this episode.

Yes. Yes she was.

It went on. It goes on.

And I think even though this was brushed with modern day nunnerisms and opinions, I really hope some fibby nuns were getting stuck in back then.

PuttingDownRoots · 17/01/2023 00:12

I love Phyllis stepping up to be a Mum to Nancy

PuttingDownRoots · 17/01/2023 00:14

I wondered if Sister Julienne was absent due to schedule clashes with the Railway children...

ArcaneWireless · 17/01/2023 00:22

Good call.

I was assuming she just didn’t fancy the legume purée.

Puffalicious · 17/01/2023 00:42

They absolutely do. I just adore her.

A great episode, I feel. Even Dr Drag was okay- not too much of him and he didn't try to save the world.

However, Trixie annoys the bloody beJesus out of me. Her character has had her day. She's so up her own arse and so bloody smug it's driving me insane. She's bossing him around like a haridan- playing into age old stereotypes. Bah!

smileladiesplease · 17/01/2023 00:56

I can't watch too many angry Fanny's

PriamFarrl · 17/01/2023 07:45

Fanny’s angry what?

LouisCatorze · 17/01/2023 09:17

Trixie is turning into a Stepford Wife before our very eyes, when she was always so feisty. Almost a parody of her former self? Maybe the point of the cookery was more about the programme highlighting another emerging social trend - 'bigging up' Cordon Bleu cookery which was a thing at that point in time, I believe?

I was discombobulated by the mother and two children sleeping in a single bed in the refuge place. How did any of them get any sleep?

I went to a talk when the film came out and she couldn't be there due to having covid.

Hope she's okay whatever the reason.

Always4Brenner · 17/01/2023 14:34

Tricia annoys me now the cooking scene was just rubbish. Fibby nun much better this week. Phyllis fabulous as always.

ShirleyHolmes · 17/01/2023 15:29

Love Phyllis! I fantasise about Phyllis and Mildred (Doc Turner’s secretary) having a lesbian fling. Think they make a marvellous couple! 😂😂

NecklessMumster · 17/01/2023 17:32

I was a bit annoyed with that episode, I think theyre imposing todays attitudes onto the past. I remember protests about making rape in marriage an offence in the 80s, I knew it wasn't an offence then. I don't think those attitudes would have been present at the time, I think there was an attitude of men having ' conjugal rights' or marital rights, if your woman belongs to you you can't rape her as you can't take what is yours to have. I don't think domestic abuse was taken that seriously either. The first women's refuge wasn't opened until 1971.

longtompot · 17/01/2023 17:53

I think there would have been murmurings before that though @NecklessMumster in order for the first womens refuge to be set up.

Just looked it up at that last episode was June 1968 so not that far off

NecklessMumster · 17/01/2023 18:15

Yes, but one refuge, opened by volunteers. Then rape in marriage still legal til 1991

A Phyllis Lesbian storyline would be amazing!

ArcaneWireless · 17/01/2023 18:47

I like that they are just companionable. I doubt Phyllis would entertain the giant recorders for long!

If Phyllis goes then I probably will. She makes it for me.

And I’d like happy Lucille back.

And Trixie to go off to France to learn to cook. Or run off with the helpful veg man from the market stall when he introduced her to courgettes.

AnImaginaryCat · 17/01/2023 19:27

I enjoyed the Trixie bad cooking bit. Well I suppose I like Phyllis's reactions.

I want a Phyllis too. Where can we get a job lot?

ArcaneWireless · 17/01/2023 19:32

I quite liked Sister MJ (I think) saying that it was quite the achievement to get the same consistency for both the gazpacho and the legume thing. 😁

I would have loved the gazpacho. The other thing? No. No thank you.

SoupDragon · 17/01/2023 19:34

I liked the cooking bit. Trixie desperately wants to be perfect. It was nice to see her embrace her failure and to serve up the corned need hash at the end.

TrashyPanda · 17/01/2023 22:15

Testina · 14/01/2023 01:20

I do enjoy watching it… but can I ask, does anyone else fast forward the voiceover intro and just stop before the ending waffle?
Just so unbearably smug and patronising!

Oh yes!
