Anyone watching? Dr smug unfortunately appears fully recovered from the train crash.

Love Phyllis too.
New nun was good too.
Trixie is just a parody these days.

RandomCatGenerator · 19/01/2023 20:41

Oh poor sad Lucille. She was so delightful and happy when she arrived and now her life just seems so sad and small.

RandomCatGenerator · 19/01/2023 20:43

Agree with PP, isn’t Phyllis divine.

I did wonder about her, when Nancy was talking about the elderly lesbian couple and said she’d never met a lesbian before, and Phyllis replied ‘you probably have, you just won’t know it’. Could be the reason Phyllis has never found a partner…

RandomCatGenerator · 19/01/2023 20:46

Used to love Trixie. She’s now just very very annoying…

Didn't Phyllis lose her fiance in the war? She also had a bit of a thing with a policeman. None of that would necessarily rule out her being a lesbian though.

Oh of course she did have the thing with the policeman, I forgot. Good point.

RandomCatGenerator · 19/01/2023 21:14

Oh and Sister MJ can just get in the bin really can’t she. Tedious.

Yup! So irritating. All that crap about the cake having brandy? can't recall, but blindly talking about some posh brand. She's tone deaf.

I love Sister MJ! ❤️ I love it when she quotes poetry and seems to be oo topic but really She's wise. I like her kindness too which emerges from her usual dottiness!

And the chap from her Spanish class - who turned out to have a wife.
I think she was probably thinking of Patsie and Delia and how their patients didn't know.

SoupDragon · 20/01/2023 09:46

It was Dr Turner's secretary with the policeman I think.

Testina · 20/01/2023 10:06

Yes, Miss Higgins. Didn’t the policeman and his handlebar moustache have a heart attack and go off to Margate to retire with his sister?

SoupDragon · 20/01/2023 10:43

yes, he did. He didn't want Miss Higgins to have to be his carer.

CaptainMyCaptain · 20/01/2023 11:41

That was it. Chances are neither of them are lesbians then. Yes, Phyllis was probably thinking of Delia and Patsy or any number of other people quietly living under the radar at that time.

Waitingforcoffee · 20/01/2023 11:46

I think Phyllis has just seen a lot of life and knows a lot of things.

Waitingforcoffee · 20/01/2023 12:04

Trixie seems so tense and annoyed these days, you'd think she would be looking forward to her new future with Matthew and enjoying being the bride to be, but it doesn't show much. Pre-wedding nerves are creeping in perhaps, but I would be surprised if Trixie would succumb to that, (beyond a necessary dress drama, of course!)

I thought the new nun was a bit OTT and again, fairly modern for the era. She's probably meant to fill a Sr Evangelina type gap, they can't all be Nurse Crane angels (but then Nurse Crane also started off in a Sr Evangelina stance but has softened over the series). Sr Evangelina was an original character from the books, so her general demeanour rang truer. Nurse Crane was the next best invention, elements of Sr Evangelina but different, still a recognisable "type", but the new nun's character doesn't ring quite as true for me. I felt her storyline from "annoying nun" one week to "hero nun" the next was a bit clumsy, with not enough transition time for that story arc and as a long-time viewer I do like it to be more subtle (show, not yell?!). I know I'm being picky though! It's still great viewing.

RandomCatGenerator · 20/01/2023 12:19

Do we think Lucille will return, or is that her written out?

I feel so bad for Nurse Crane, she keeps losing her earnest young friends - Barbara (heartbreaking), feisty pixie-cut local nurse, now Lucille.

ArcaneWireless · 20/01/2023 13:21

Fibby Nun (Sister Veronica) will be grand so.

She is reminding me on Sister Mary Patrick in Sister Act.

I don’t have a nun thing….

BenCoopersSupportWren · 20/01/2023 16:23

Trixie was the same when she was engaged to Tom, all stressed about china patterns and the wedding catering. I can't decide whether going through it again is true to her character, or disappointing that she learned nothing from last time and doesn't show much growth; on balance I lean to the latter view.

I really hope she returns. I like her and Cyril and I want them to have babies

PuttingDownRoots · 20/01/2023 17:34

With Lucille.. October 1968 was when the Race Relations Act was passed, making it illegal to discriminate in housing and employment. I'm wondering if they mean to highlight that by having Lucille return with more hope.

I wonder if her stress is due to the fact the last time she planned her wedding it didn't go ahead and she has nerves about the same happening again?

I hope Lucille comes back. I love their little dances when in their flat and it would be nice for them to have a happy ending, or even start with their baby and maybe a new life in a house somewhere, maybe in a parish Cyril is in a church for?

Toddlerteaplease · 22/01/2023 18:05

Watching one of the early episodes. They were all middle class and Jenny was also a bit of a snob. Sr Monica Joan was much more eccentric, and her dementia was more marked!

Oh how I miss Sister Evangelina.

Jenny, Sister Evangelina and Mrs Jenkins.

I think that is one of the most touching and achingly sad scenes of CTM.

Amidst such abject misery, a beautiful example of loving care and the ‘calling’.

It has stayed with me.
