@MrsAvocet I was about to write something similar. Or it's progressing the developing relationship (even if it is currently friendship) between Nancy and Matthew?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 09/01/2023 15:09

Martin Fowler the first time we've seen a dad at a birth in CTM history?

They are getting up to when I was born, and DDad always said I was the first child (I'm third) he was even expected to be at the hospital for.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 09/01/2023 15:13

Sorry, should have said "Was Martin Fowler...".

Eatentoomanyroses · 09/01/2023 15:58

No there’s definitely been other men at births before. I thought it was rubbish last night. This week it was breast cancer, last week wasn’t it stomach cancer? So depressing

OttersMayHaveShiftedInTransit · 09/01/2023 16:00

I can't think of a particular story but I'm sure there have been a few dads in the delivery room before. I think Sister Evangelina was dead against it.

longtompot · 09/01/2023 17:41

I thought this was a much better episode to the first one of this series. Lucilles heartbreak was just so sad and it made me cry.
I loved the storyline with 'Martin Fowler' and his wife. I don't know how accurate how the skin was with breast cancer, but if that is how it can look then I have learnt something. I did know about the orange peel skin though.
It did make me laugh, the grapefruit marmalade coming back with Sister Monica Joan winning the raffle. I did like how she came out of herself with the children and taught them the maypole dance.

Toddlerteaplease · 09/01/2023 17:43

Dr Smug was at the north of Teddy.

I was thinking the same. Financial difficulties future story most likely. Though isn't there some sort of friendship between them. Didn't Nancy and Matthew sing together the other week?

Interesting anyway

Many many years ago I worked in a benefits office. We all used to snigger when scaffolders frequently came in having been laid off by a firm called Rapid Erections. We didn't laugh at them obviously just the name.

I remember a company back in 1970s called Spook Erections.
their logo was a pregnant ghost.

Nancy and Flashy Teeth have much more chemistry than him and Trixie.

it’s obvious the writers are desperate to finally get her married off (it’s been signalled with all the subtlety of a ten ton truck) but there is nothing between them. And Trixie just looks like his money is the th8ng she loves best.

Love CTM.
In fact, my own birth could’ve come straight from a CTM script!
I was born at home, not east London but west.
My DM had her first baby, my brother, in a Jewish maternity hospital in Hampton. As it was straightforward, nearly 4 years later (1967) she decided on a home birth.
She said she sat down to watch ‘The Monkees’ and said to my lovely Ddad (RIP) that she was in labour, and ‘to call the midwife’
When my DD spoke to the MW, she said she couldn’t possibly come right now, nothing would happen for hours, and she had to go and attend to another mother to be.
My DM then informed my dad that the baby was going to come pretty imminently, so they went upstairs. My DD called on the NDN to come and help, and basically she was useless, he gave her a glass of brandy, she shook like a leaf & went completely white…just stood in the corner of the bedroom, frozen to the spot.
Anyway, this all took 2 hours in total, and my DD brought me into the world. He always was the most calmest, unflappable, placid man in the world, so that helped.
The MW did turn up after that (on her bike) to cut the chord. She wasn’t happy!
We played the CTM theme tune at DD’s funeral which is will be a year ago this Saturday.
On a side note, DM was so insistent about The Monkees, I actually managed to find a TV listing for that date. She was absolutely right! I think Juke Box Jury was in just before that.

The preview for next week showed Phyllis handing Nancy an ominous brown envelope so looks like she’s getting into money troubles! She’s had a few scenes leading up to it, getting her daughter a tv, the fancy dress as well as the argument with Tricia about the amount of clothes she’s got

She's been buying 'on the never never'.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 11/01/2023 17:45

Surely Nancy would be squirrelling money away so she could get her own place for her daughter and herself.

Very silly to spend money on frivolous stuff (I'm a nurse and raised my dd completely on my own so know the value of money!!)

Rosa I love that story! Why was the midwife cross? Was it because she'd been wrong to delay coming?

My Nan had my mum and my uncle at home, both were born in January and my Nan says there was heavy snow both times! The mw was late getting there for my uncle but luckily my Nan (who was a tiny little thing) managed on her own! My Grandad was old school and kept out of the way 🙄

My Nan told me the mw arrived in time for my mums birth and was so calm and soothing it was a lovely birth.

I do wonder if births are getting more complicated, my dds birth was so traumatic in comparison!! It ended with an emcs and was a terrible experience 😢

I think she was cross because she was probably going to get a telling off from her superiors!

Ladybird69 · 11/01/2023 23:10

Where’s all the midwives and nuns going? Is it just a sign of how the hospitals took over the care or is the cast getting smaller? I didn’t see the lying nun either this week was she sent back? Is the lady who play Lucille coming back ? I love nurse crane she reminds me of the midwife I had for my first baby, heart of gold.

SoupDragon · 11/01/2023 23:17

Lying nun was there - she's the marmalade nun.

DollsHouseDreams · 13/01/2023 17:05

I think it's "surely Nancy should be squirrelling money away"... (rather than "would") but then there'd be no drama if everyone did everything perfectly! Grin

I think Nancy probably has gone a bit mad with spending, but maybe there'll be an extra storyline that she has been doing something dodgy to get extra money, ie selling off old out of date medical supplies cheap, like bandages etc destined for the bin. Or, perhaps she's buying on the never-never and is in a right financial mess, so bailiffs will come to take away the nun's TV or something. Nancy had a bit of a OTT side initially which the MW have trained out of her (re work) but maybe it's still an element of her personality which will pop out in her personal life.

CaptainMyCaptain · 13/01/2023 18:29

It will be the never never - buy now pay later aka Hire Purchase.

Yes breast cancer can definitely present like that. It's not always a lump. I have heard of a couple of women whose cancer has presented like this.

I do enjoy watching it… but can I ask, does anyone else fast forward the voiceover intro and just stop before the ending waffle?
Just so unbearably smug and patronising!
