We rented out telly until 1990!

We had our first in 1978, also rented and it was a massive deal, I remember the excitement now!!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/12/2022 10:13

Dh and I rented a washing machine in 1994 in our first flat !!

I was a chid in the 1960s, and we used to get a sack full of presents. My mum was an excellent needlewoman and used to make stuffed toys for us. We built up a collection of all the Winnie the Pooh animals over the years, plus various dolls.

And my dad made us a doll's house.

My grandad made my mum a dolls house, I had it, then my daughter- it’s in the loft!

Andre Courrege 1965.

Probably took about 18 months to become mainstream. Trixie was very much of the moment!

Pretty much everyone had a TV in the late 60s but, yes, a lot of people rented them. There were also TVs with a coin slot to pay to view!

My extended family had a "coin TV". They had it up till the early 90's! But I only have very brief memories of it, as I wasn't born till 1990.

Every week a man came to collect the coins apparently, like a vending machine, and when enough coins were collected to pay for the TV, it was basically switched to "free dispense" but the coin slot and mechanism couldn't be removed, so you had to keep dropping the coin in to trigger the TV to come on, but the coin would just roll back out rather than go into the "collection box" 😂

@CaptainMyCaptain yes I saw she was upthread, which explains the voluminous dresses and the odd shape in her uniform. It was just the appraising glance that Phyllis gave her as she left the room that made me think they might make a storyline out of it. There have been a few subtle references to the fact that they're not planning to wait until they're married already.

I would have thought Trixie would be more organised than that though.

I feel like Matthew has infinitely more chemistry with Nancy than Trixie!

PuttingDownRoots · 28/12/2022 12:49

Helen George had her baby over a year ago now, but would have been still recovering when they filmed the Christmas special in April.

LouisCatorze · 28/12/2022 13:01

@crisscrosscringle I totally agree. They seem very cosy!

There's a weird amount of scenes between the two of them considering we're supposed to be rooting for Matthew and Trixie.
Perhaps Matthew will swan off into the sunset with Nancy leaving Trixie bereft and pregnant 😣🤪

I agree! I kept thinking they were going to have a quick snog 😂

I feel like Trixie likes Mathew, he fits the bill, handsome and wealthy. I definitely don't feel like she's in love with him.

At the end of the day though I don't blame her, how she's managed living at Nonatus House for so long is beyond me!!

PriamFarrl · 28/12/2022 14:17

Funnily enough me and DH were talking today about rental TVs and how common it was. I remember friends in the late 90s who had a rental, they had rented it for two years and asked about buying it, only to be told that they would be expected to pay the full price.
We have Hughes Electrical near us who still do rentals. It’s a lot less common these days though. I think the difference is the availability of credit. Even 20 year ago it was harder to get credit to buy things like a TV. Also TVs were very unreliable. If your rental one broke down then it would be repaired or replaced.

InMySpareTime · 28/12/2022 19:20

Why are Nancy and Trixie still sharing a room? If they're that short of midwives that everyone is pulling extra shifts there should be spare rooms aplenty in that place.

LouisCatorze · 29/12/2022 10:43

Why are Nancy and Trixie still sharing a room? It must be simply a plot device. When they had the four male medical students staying (to raise extra money?) they had sufficient room, so there should be one or two spare ones in the building.

Definitely!

he and Trixie is just so forced.

back in 1967, women of her age (38) were definitely regarded as middle-aged and dressed like it too.

Now that would be a great storyline!

LouisCatorze · 29/12/2022 15:44

Trixie seems very brittle to me and as if she keeps men (even the one she's supposedly in love with) at a distance?

I would imagine Matthew is her last chance (or how she sees it)? Particularly if she wants to have children (although has she ever voiced that?).

If you go back to the scenes with Tom and the scenes where she talked about her childhood (yes I binge watched last Christmas!!) it seems like what she really wants is a man who can give her a lifestyle she craves and makes her feel secure. She's a bit hard headed about getting those things so not particularly romantic.
I used to really, really dislike her until I binge watched and realised that she's actually quite a well-written character.

ArcaneWireless · 02/01/2023 17:36

I don’t love the lying nun.

I miss Sisters Hilda and Francis and they’ve only been gone a minute.

And Trixie has gone all bridezilla. That might be tiresome. I too am hoping that Marty sees sense and nips off with Nancy.

I loved House of Idiot and so it was a lovely thing to see Stella Gonet. Shame it was such a sad story.

ArcaneWireless · 02/01/2023 17:37

Matty.

Katrinawaves · 02/01/2023 17:50

Oh don’t say that about Trixie. She’s like Edith in Downton Abbey - always unlucky in love. I really want her to get her happy ending!

WhatICallMyUsername · 02/01/2023 18:14

@ArcaneWireless House Of Idiot 🤣

I didn't love the lying nun storyline. Surely they wouldn't tolerate it! Sister Frances could have stayed and run the new storyline as well

ArcaneWireless · 02/01/2023 18:18

Sorry Katrina 🤭

Lying nun would have been that busy hail marying and twiddling rosary beads for her lies, she wouldn’t have had a minute to deliver babies and go all quadrophonia on our arses.
