As I said earlier in the thread I got a pillow case full in the 60s. Not a well off MC family.

Puffalicious · 27/12/2022 15:38

Just finishing it now. I love it as it's harmless and feel-good- it reminds me of my late mam who had read the books before the series and loved them and the programme.

I was delighted that Sister MJ and Lucille were barely in it- both rip my knitting!!!

flapjackfairy · 27/12/2022 15:50

I was a child in the seventies and one of 4 children and we always used a pillow case and it was full to the brim. We weren't wealthy either so yes it was realistic of the era.

uhtredbebbanburg · 27/12/2022 17:00

I loved it. DD and I were happy Cindy found the perfect women to help her, a midwife and an admin wiz! No need for Dr Turner sounding encouragement when his wife was handling the birth perfectly fine. I like knowing I can watch CTM Christmas special and nothing tragic will happen.

JanglyBeads · 27/12/2022 17:06

Oh that explains that weird whiteish coat with blue trim, it was weird and the main problem was its width!

IVbumble · 27/12/2022 17:16

I'm not sure people would have talked about stress at all in the late 60's early 70's.

I like to watch for the vintage prams mostly but they're not often from the correct era.

Ch3wylemon · 27/12/2022 19:15

I remember Hand knitted Christmas jumpers being a thing in the 60's and 70's before going out of fashion as being irredeemably naff. Their recent comeback started off as ironic.

DD and I watched both of the Christmas Malory Towers episodes this afternoon - you need to suspend your disbelief but it's similar cosy viewing. On iplayer.

I really enjoyed it, the head nun (brains not working and can't remember her name) talking shit about the engagement ring to Mathew pissed me off though, wtf was she talking about?!

I'm glad Trixie is finally engaged, I hope she gets married and has her own baby soon.

It's nonsense but perfect comfort viewing.

Did anyone see Phyllis Crane playing Strike’s dying step mum recently?

I also love that she is the voice of the Twirlywoos.

Yes, I saw her being Joan. Thinking back a fair way, I think she might have been in Lark Rise to Candleford. I'll have to check that one out some time.

I agree. It was none of her business to tell him that Trixie had been engaged before, and certainly not to tell him about the ring. (Which I don’t think it was true).

CriticalAlert · 27/12/2022 19:59

It's totally sentimental schmalz but I love it.

She was telling him that Trixie is superficial and cares about appearance above everything else.

i can’t stand him - he’s another Dr Turner, solving things where the poor little women cannot. Plus he can’t act and there is zero chemistry with Trixie.

Soubriquet · 28/12/2022 09:03

Sister Julienne does seem to be getting more judgy as time goes on.

I mean, in the first season, when Jenny was flabbergasted at a brother and sister sharing the same bed, Sister Julienne scolded her for being judgemental.

Then the pill was released for unmarried women and she got cats bum mouth.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 28/12/2022 09:09

When no Phyllis was with Cindy in labour, trying to calm her, Cindy was recalling writing down her childhood address with the police officer's pen the night she was taken into care.

Cindy said she came from Mannigham in Bradford. Phyllis is from Leeds - less than 10 miles oaway. I'm surprised the script writers didn't get Phyllis to say something about how strong "us strong Yorkshire lasses will get through this together."

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/12/2022 09:12

Wouldn't a telly have been an absolute fortune back then ? I was a bit surprised to see the Irish midwife buy one!

Love it though 😂

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 28/12/2022 09:12

I used to lecture history of fashion, l think the clothes are pretty close to that era.

They weren’t high fashion people or young and trendy. People kept clothes and wore them for much longer then. I’d expect clothes to be 3 or 4 years old on these sort of people.

l was 4 in 1967. I remeber all my aunts dressing like people on the show. Flares and hot pants were for the Carnaby Street set.

Was the snowmen thing appropriate ? Rather than having the Mullocks child on stage as is, everyone had to be turned into a limbless snowman? Not sure

I wondered that too. Would have sent a stronger message if we had been able to see her arms and legs.

I think most people rented them. It was far more common then. I remember upgrading ours every few years.

jay55 · 28/12/2022 09:25

I found it really frustrating that we had Phyllis and Miss Higgins being total rockstars rescuing Cindy and delivering her baby, and then had them as ridiculous figures of fun at the talent show.

I thought they were heading towards shaky ground when Shelagh was talking to the kids about the costumes and how snowmen only had little twiggy arms or something.

Pretty much everyone had a TV in the late 60s but, yes, a lot of people rented them. There were also TVs with a coin slot to pay to view!

icanwearwhatiwant · 28/12/2022 09:43

Is Trixie supposed to be pregnant in the new series and that will be a big storyline (pregnant outside of marriage)??

Only there was a scene when the two of them were squabbling over space to hang dresses, Trixie was in her uniform and looked a bit barrel shaped. Phyllis came in and as she was leaving there was a momentary look at her stomach/looked as if she wanted to say something.

I think the actor is pregnant in RL.

I follow the brilliant Hilary Davidson, costume historian, on Twitter, and she has said similar, in that the biggest ‘inaccuracy’ in productions is that everyone is wearing very fashionable clothes, rather than a mix of things from past decade or two!
