I'm the biggest fan of Motherland normally but I feel so let down by the Xmas special! Have been looking forward to it all day but didn't laugh once. Yes it was very sad etc but not what I wanted from a Xmas special at all.

We did see an ambulance as the dad got in it saying it was for him

I did think that but was quite amusing. He just passively accepted it was for him and equally passively accreted t wasn't. Subtle genius

I got it completely wrong as I thought he was referring to the Mau Mau uprising in Kenya and was being vaguely racist.

Nope, you got it completely right and that was the whole point of him asking the one black character if she knew any Mau Maus. Even though she came from Brockley. Very topical reference.

What I find depressing is it will have been in the can long before the recent royal faux pax. It must be topical because it happens so much.

'I'd post that on Instagram...if I was a dick' was my favourite line 😂

Agree🤣 brilliant line almost lost as it wasn’t that clear.

Really enjoyed it- the sadness against the humour worked for me, think it sort of captured the overall mood of the year 🤷‍♀️

Heh, I chanced on this thread, and it reminded me that I'd recorded it and hadn't watched it yet, so just did. I thought it was great, and very much in the spirit of the show. Lucy Punch is great, and I liked Bloods very much too.

I thought the Marion not waking was a joke and she would eventually.

Was really Looking forward to it but was a bit disappointed on the storyline, felt they could have done so much but not Marion's passing for a Christmas special!

Does anyone know where I could watch last yearS Xmas special? I'm not sure if I've missed it.

The 2020 Christmas episode is on BBCiplayer.

It is after the last episode of Series 2.

Wish it had been longer because a lot seemed underdeveloped. And not having more Anne is a massive mistake as that character is hilarious.

She was too busy with all her guests 😉

mnahmnah · 25/12/2022 07:46

I loved that Kevin is living at ‘The Abyss’. This year’s ‘Mein Kraft’.

Saucery · 25/12/2022 07:52

I love the way Kevin holds them all together and for all his fussing, he always sorts things out for everyone.

mnahmnah · 25/12/2022 08:20

Yes! I’ve gone from thinking he was pathetic in series 1 to now wishing he was my husband 😂

Saucery · 25/12/2022 08:25

Oh, he would drive me insane within a day with the neediness for recognition [hgrin]

mnahmnah · 25/12/2022 08:32

But think of all the cooking, housework, crafting with the kids etc he would do…

TeachesOfPeaches · 25/12/2022 08:33

I thought it was great

Iamthewombat · 25/12/2022 09:15

Loved it. It was as if the writers had started out wanting to write an episode around ‘faithful friends who are dear to us”. I was rooting for Amanda throughout, which I never expected after the first series!

That was the best line of the show for me.

DarkDarkNight · 25/12/2022 09:22

I really enjoyed it. Watched it twice straight through on iPlayer so half an hour obviously not enough. I thought it was funny, but it also does poignant really well.

Loved the Abyss/Ibis line and the women all chucking the kids work in the bin. Lots of funny mutterings from Julia. I was happy Amanda said something to her mother and walked away with her head held high.

Spidey66 · 25/12/2022 09:24

Lucy Punch always reminds me that Samantha Brick.

Icecreamandapplepie · 25/12/2022 09:25

Watched it the second time and found it much funnier. Defo worth a second watch.

Willmafrockfit · 25/12/2022 09:34

i must watch it again, kept having to stop it last night as people were talking!

but it showed Liz and Kevin being such wonderful friends to Julia.
and Amanda's awful mother is the reason Amanda is awful herself

Penguinsaregreat · 25/12/2022 09:41

I loved it. Agree completely that it is difficult for comedy to pull of sadness but they managed it.

TitoMojito · 25/12/2022 09:53

I enjoyed it! I'm still laughing at Kevin telling everyone the food had been on the floor hahahaha. I also thought Marion would wake up and I really had to hold back tears when Julia found the present in the chair. But I did enjoy it.

VHSyeah · 25/12/2022 09:54

Just watched it on iPlayer and loved it!

TheMarzipanDildo · 25/12/2022 10:35

I absolutely loved it! So funny

Marion has had health issues in the past, hasn’t she? Which Julia has always passed over or accused her of trying to get out of looking after her grandchildren. She even looked ill in this episode, but Julia was oblivious. When Marion said she didn’t want a trip to Venice she seemed rather angry and said something along the lines of travel not being something she could do any more. I think she knew she was very ill and hadn’t told Julia.

Yes, they were setting this up last series. Marion had to move into Julia’s house because of her illness.

I loved it, DH is not typically fussed about Motherland but watched with me and he thought it was very good as well. If I was a character in Motherland I would be a female Kevin, so that adds to the fun, I know that not only would I have boreki in the oven, I would be stressing about them being overcooked even though someone had died, and if I dropped them on the floor, I would not be able to think straight till I'd picked them up.
