I'm the biggest fan of Motherland normally but I feel so let down by the Xmas special! Have been looking forward to it all day but didn't laugh once. Yes it was very sad etc but not what I wanted from a Xmas special at all.

I laughed out loud loads . We watched it last night

But i was pissed though

GoodVibesHere · 25/12/2022 12:48

I didn't watch it on Friday night as I was out, so 'saved' it for today, for when I had some time to myself and as a little treat to look forward to on xmas day.

Christ that was depressing to watch on xmas day!! I so wish I hadn't saved it!

There's a queue Philip Schofield

BettyCake · 25/12/2022 15:51

I loved this. Thought it was brilliant.
'I'd instagram this but I'm not a dick' such a good line.
Also felt very sorry for Amanda and thought that storyline was very well done. Agree I'd have like to have seen more of Anne.

SaveMeCheezus · 25/12/2022 17:33

Just watched it, laughed out loud a number of times, also shed a tear. Just what you want from a Christmas special.

Oblomov22 · 25/12/2022 17:35

Disappointing. A few good bits, but was hoping for more.

DesertIslandCondiment · 25/12/2022 20:43

I'm surprised people were disappointed. I thought it was really good. We saw the characters in more depth. I loved it.

Alf Roberts (Audrey's husband) passed away in his sleep at a New Year's party in Corrie years ago. I don't remember it being controversial.

Iamthewombat · 25/12/2022 21:54

“Where’s your fish kettle?”

”Right next to my lobster teapot”.

Brilliant!

mnahmnah · 25/12/2022 21:58

Yes! Forgot about the fish kettle! Brilliant

Oh and I loved Kevin’s shock at the lack of his traditions - putting the advent crown to bed, three turns of the Christmas tree, shouting up the chimney. We’ve all spent a Christmas elsewhere and discovered they do it totally differently

Agree

Gwdihooooo · 25/12/2022 23:33

I enjoyed it and esp loved how
Liz dealt with the whole death practically. She’d be a super star friend to have

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/12/2022 18:37

Rewatched and def funnier (apart from the death of mum)

All was quite Whity

TonTonMacoute · 26/12/2022 20:00

It was a strange one, and not easy viewing for us as MIL is very near the end in a nursing home atm.

However I thought they did a good job, and the look Julia gives her husband when he said he couldn't remember the last time he'd hummus had us all in stitches.

Joanna as the toxic mother from hell is amazing.

biddyboo · 23/12/2022 22:19

I really enjoyed it too. To the pp, Julia isn't supposed to be likeable!

Wait

why not?!?

chary · 26/12/2022 20:08

I really liked it

DonttouchthatLarry · 26/12/2022 21:05

Well I watched it yesterday afternoon, having seen the spoilers about Marion. My MIL died yesterday morning (not unexpectedly, 92 and been in hospital for a while) so I didn't think DH would want to watch it - I waited until he'd gone out with the dogs. I actually thought it was great - very poignant and ultimately uplifting. Loved that Marion had booked the same trip that Julia was going to and that Amanda stood up to her horrible mother.

Jellywobblescobbles · 26/12/2022 22:22

It was great. It’s co-writer Sharon Horgans style to mix up emotions. Catastrophe was similarly written.

MeinKraft · 26/12/2022 23:29

Enjoyed it much more on a rewatch. Think it was just a shock to see unexpected death on a comedy Christmas special, plus they almost sort of killed Marian off before and she was alright so I was expecting it to be a mistake.

Beamur · 26/12/2022 23:38

Found it a bit too sad in our house..

NewMoonPhase · 26/12/2022 23:40

I liked it. Just watched it. Might have been the first time Julia didn't annoy the flying shit out of me!

Ha! Yes, that too.

middleager · 27/12/2022 00:17

Loved it. Laughed out loud many times and cried when Amanda visited her ex and at Julia's sobbing over her mother.
It was all beautifully done.

closingloop · 27/12/2022 00:59

I really REALLY wish I'd read all of this before I watched it. Completely blindsided by the death of Marion after my own mothers funeral just 3 weeks ago. It was one of the few things on TV that I'd been looking forward to this christmas and it was a bit of a shock.

My mother died in hospital, but if someone dies at home you have to call an ambulance who stay until the police arrive who then stay until the funeral directors arrive - or that's what happened to a friend - her parent had been dead for several hours when found so she'd initially phoned the funeral director. The whole process took several hours.

I'm going to watch it again as everything after the death was a bit of a blur - will follow it with the 2020 special for light relief!
