I'm the biggest fan of Motherland normally but I feel so let down by the Xmas special! Have been looking forward to it all day but didn't laugh once. Yes it was very sad etc but not what I wanted from a Xmas special at all.

I made an account on here just to rant about the special! I love this show so damn much, it has such great jokes, points out so much stuff regarding the current world we live in etc etc. I could go on about how great Motherland is but I am seething with too much anger right now.

First of all, it's worth stating that this episode has a different director than the actual directors. Secondly, I'm shocked anyone even likes this special at all unless they've got a pea for a brain. A quintessential character to the show just flipping dies and that's that??? They make a bloody joke out of it??? And Meg gets pissed about a freaking HAT? WTF? That's how shallow they end up showing Meg, who's literally the opposite of shallow and fake?
It was so unfunny, and I think there's serious politics behind this episode. They've made it literally to take the piss out of the whole show in general. The acting felt so forced. They've changed the color pattern of the show as well! GRRRRR this makes me so angry. I feel like they just told Julia for this episode, "Hey, just uhh, be like loud and busy like any other episode."
This episode had NO message (unlike all the other episodes of Motherland that ALWAYS have a message about the society or about the characters).

You must have watched a different programme to me.

thesnow · 03/01/2023 19:39

Well, I clearly have a pea for a brain, as I liked it.

And Sharon Horgan and Holly Walsh were still the writers, weren't they? And the director for the Christmas special this time was the same as series 3 and the last special according to Google, so I think you're probably talking out of your arse.

What possible agenda is there?!

Yeah, Meg was weak, too little Anne. But the focus was on Julia and Amanda's relationships with their mums. And it's only half an hour.

It was good.

😂 I liked it.

zummyizhere · 03/01/2023 19:46

U must have not watched the show at all, snarky pants

creamcoffee · 03/01/2023 19:49

well done for registering @zummyizhere
AIBU is that way

Exasperatednow · 03/01/2023 19:58

I loved it.

Completely agree.

Are you agreeing with yourself here or did you forget to name change?

duc748 · 03/01/2023 20:05

And let's be right: the hat was bloody awful! 😀

An expensive awful Robin Hood hat too.

ThePoshUns · 03/01/2023 20:32

Me and my little old pea brain enjoying stuff again. That's me told.

Shitzngiggles · 03/01/2023 20:37

Well I've got a pea for a brain then, I loved it. There's some serious over thinking going on there. Calm down.

BettyCake · 03/01/2023 20:40

Oh dear, I also loved this, I must be a member of the pea brain club then.

Iamthewombat · 03/01/2023 20:45

I think there's serious politics behind this episode

Question from a member of the pea brain club: what ‘politics’? To what end? Have you got a conspiracy theory to delight us with?

I loved it. I laughed out loud and cried quietly. That they could pack so much humour and sadness into half an hour was very impressive.

The message I took away from it was that you can meet someone at the school gates, make polite chit chat and have absolutely nothing in common with them but the fact your D.C. are in the same school. You might even dislike some of them but over time some of those people will gradually become close friends and a fabulous support network. That's certainly been my experience.

StillWeRise · 03/01/2023 21:29

I liked it
the point about the hat surely was that her DH spent loads of money on something she didn't like or want, it made her feel like he didn;t really know her...but then she found out he didn't really like the jacket, they both had made the same stupid mistake (perhaps wanting the other one to be the sort of person who would like the hat/jacket a bit)
I don't think the death was treated as a joke at all. I think if anything the message of that was to value those we love, we don't know when we'll lose them.

GCAcademic · 03/01/2023 21:51

I thought it was brilliant. It’s possibly my favourite episode so far.

Not sure why they would “make it literally to take the piss out of the show in general” but no doubt my unsophisticated pea brain is unable to grasp the nuances that the more discerning pp has detected.

lollipoprainbow · 03/01/2023 22:30

Watched it again a few times and agree it's actually quite good. Paul outside in his trunks comforting Julia 😂

This is hilarious

Or so my pea brain thinks anyway

NashvilleQueen · 04/01/2023 07:36

A couple of weeks on the things that I am left baffled by are the fact of no mention of Sam Shepherd (were we to assume they'd split up?) and Liz giving a shit about Lee getting stranded. Where is Lee's partner (and new child?) or were they to have a blended family Christmas like Amanda?

Southeastdweller · 04/01/2023 07:53

I would really like to know the writers rationale about the beyond crass remark from Tamara about miscarrying. Did they think seriously anyone would find that funny?

I don’t think it was meant to be a joke. Although I did think it was odd and not really what someone would say in everyday life, especially with people they don’t know well.

In the sports day episode I'm sure Lee says him and dairylee cheese have split up.

thesnow · 04/01/2023 08:45

Are you thinking the remark about not knowing if it'll stick is "crass"? It's not, it's a normal thing women say. A large proportion of really pregnancies don't stick, so many feel it's a healthy attitude. If it's crass, then I'm crass (and pea brained), as it's something me and my female friends would say.
