I'm the biggest fan of Motherland normally but I feel so let down by the Xmas special! Have been looking forward to it all day but didn't laugh once. Yes it was very sad etc but not what I wanted from a Xmas special at all.

We did see an ambulance as the dad got in it saying it was for him

tocahairchop · 24/12/2022 17:40

'I'd post that on Instagram...if I was a dick' was my favourite line 😂

avamiah · 24/12/2022 18:11

I actually thought she was going to wake up and Kevin got it wrong.
I think that would of been brilliant .

Snorklette · 24/12/2022 18:21

I adore Motherland. I have watched last years Xmas special 496 times. At least. They are all superb. This year I have two close family bereavements and so have my friends. A shit year. I didn’t watch this until tonight as I wanted to save it. For Christmas Eve. I’m in the sad camp. Really sad. Especially after the events of the last couple of years and currently happening. Motherland could have made us laugh and uplifted us. Instead it made me remember all the awful, awful stuff. I will always love Motherland but this one was hugely misjudged. We all just need a bloody laugh!

I would have loved to see Anne's christmas with all the Pats 😀
why no mention of Sam Shepard?
why did Anne have a triple buggy?! Did she have twins? I can't remember it being mentioned.
I think Meg and Bills relationship was still really strained after they'd sorted the present issue.

memyselfi · 24/12/2022 18:48

Could someone explain the Philip Schofield joke plz ?
I don't get it.

I don't get it.

He and Holly Willoughby supposedly jumped the queue at QE2 lying in state.

Womanofthe80s · 24/12/2022 18:52

It was brilliant. I liked how we saw a litte bit more of each character. Julia was more vulnerable and likeable as was Amanda - it was no longer 'poor Anne' but happy Anne surrounded by her family. Meg kept a bit more in the background, not as loud and maybe a bit selfish - interesting how she could happily tell Anthony Head (not sure her husbands name) that she hated that hat but she really didn't like to be told he hated the jacket. Kevin and Liz keeping everything going in the background as always. Beautifully written, just great.

memyselfi · 24/12/2022 18:52

GrinGrinGrin brilliant !

I meant we didn't see the whole procedure. The police could have been there unseen but it wasn't the focus.

Twiglets1 · 24/12/2022 18:57

It was good but I wish they hadn’t felt the need to have such a depressing thing happen. Death isn’t funny, I feel the show could have been funnier if kept more light hearted.

darisdet · 24/12/2022 19:10

Catching up and liked it, but this thread did prepare me I think. I don't know if that made a difference.

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/12/2022 19:29

I didn’t read thread before so had no idea what was should to happen

Sausagenbacon · 24/12/2022 19:35

I loved it

mnahmnah · 24/12/2022 21:14

Why thank you @Blip

Amidoingsomethingwrong · 24/12/2022 21:15

I agree with the poster above. It was brilliant

Saucery · 24/12/2022 21:20

Marion has had health issues in the past, hasn’t she? Which Julia has always passed over or accused her of trying to get out of looking after her grandchildren. She even looked ill in this episode, but Julia was oblivious. When Marion said she didn’t want a trip to Venice she seemed rather angry and said something along the lines of travel not being something she could do any more. I think she knew she was very ill and hadn’t told Julia.

AtomicBlondeRose · 24/12/2022 21:26

But she had bought tickets to Venice for herself and Julia, that was just to stop Julia booking the holiday.

Delatron · 23/12/2022 22:29

My only complaint is that I wanted more. 30 minutes not enough when we’ve had nothing for a year.

THIS

She had a heart condition

but she told her not to book Venice because she had bought a trip to Venice for Julia already

TheresOnlyOneWayOfLife · 24/12/2022 21:29

Absolutely loved it. But needed more

Offleyhoo · 24/12/2022 22:00

I loved it too. Yes sad but realistic. The Lucy Punch visit to her ex husband’s house was heartbreaking.

mrsmarmalade12 · 24/12/2022 22:03

I was expecting her just not to be dead and walk in, it was really odd!

Atethehalloweenchocs · 24/12/2022 22:25

I got it completely wrong as I thought he was referring to the Mau Mau uprising in Kenya and was being vaguely racist.

Nope, you got it completely right and that was the whole point of him asking the one black character if she knew any Mau Maus. Even though she came from Brockley. Very topical reference.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 24/12/2022 22:27

Wish it had been longer because a lot seemed underdeveloped. And not having more Anne is a massive mistake as that character is hilarious.
