I’m rewatching again after finishing it yesterday. Haven’t stopped thinking about it all day. Got a bit confused during it so did need to read Review Geek for a summary - the mumbling didn’t help either. I sobbed at the end.

Nanalisa60 · 19/11/2022 20:03

Well it’s over a week since I watched it and still keep thinking about it, I have decided that on Monday I have a day off, I’m going to watch it all again.

That book has been on my list to read for such a long time. Think I'm going to get around to reading it now.

I cannot recommend it enough, although I will say it's the greatest book I've never been able to read twice

KillingMeDeftly · 19/11/2022 20:42

I've had Bury My Heart on my bookshelf for years so I really must get around to reading it. I think it was made into a mini-series in the early 00s?

WotsitsQuavers · 19/11/2022 22:01

The music was amazing too-

Some Say (I've got Devil) by Melanie

Crucify your mind by Rodriguez (there is a good documentary about Sixto Rodriguez called Searching for Sugar man)

www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/the-english-soundtrack-bbc/

The cinematography was beautiful- as if every scene can be a painting.

It's like watching poetry.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 25/11/2022 12:34

Finished this in the early hours this morning, I was crying and I never cry at things on telly, well not since Never Ending Story.

The chemistry and connection between the two leads was incredible.

I loved it and will be re-watching, hoping for a different outcome for them both 😢

Nanalisa60 · 25/11/2022 15:47

I know it broke my heart, what a love story true soul mates.

I’ve watched it 4 times, have become quite obsessed!! Cried every time.

cushioncovers · 26/11/2022 07:54

It gets you like that doesn't it Boggle. I'm watched it twice and still think about it daily.

Puppypower83 · 27/11/2022 23:03

Just finished it. Feel like I’ve been on a journey and am now bereft that it’s over. can’t remember the last time I cried at a series like that!

peaceandove · 28/11/2022 09:45

Loved it. Loved it. Loved it. Visually it was heart stopping, especially watching it in UHD. The mumbling was annoying though, had to keep re-winding to hear what was being said - aren't actors trained to enunciate anymore FFS? Also Emily Blunt was sporting ridiculous levels of make-up and blusher.

But was spellbound by the tension between her and Eli and was so relieved there was no nudity or gratuitous sex scenes.

peaceandove · 28/11/2022 09:46

I keep trying to manufacture a believable alternate ending where Cornelia & Eli stay together, but don't think it can be done. Heart breaking.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 28/11/2022 13:00

peaceanddove mine involves ignoring the 'x years later' scenes, Cornelia returning to England and engaging in an extremely early experimental drug trial with a miraculous cure being the result, then a few years later returning prompted by a dream to free Eli from prison or something and then they ride off together to grow corn in Nebraska.

I haven't indulged in this level of fantasy making since reading LoTR when I was a teenager.

I love that.

I disappeared down a syphilis worm hole earlier, and apparently the first truly successful treatment for it was discovered in 1909. So, theoretically Cornelia could have been one of the first victims treated (what will her being the daughter of an Earl, etc) and is successfully cured. She could then head back to Nebraska to find Eli.........?

The series has been incredibly successful so, right now, Hugo Blick will be wracking his brains how he can come up with a convincing season 2.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 28/11/2022 13:10

OK... Season Two is obviously Thomas Trafford surviving the flash flood (much like Aragorn surviving the cliff fall after the orc battle) and then returning to Hoxem to ask Martha Myers to marry him but then lots of mishaps and adventures befall them on the way.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 28/11/2022 13:13

It was just like 'oh yeah he's dead, definitely dead, big dramatic flood but no need to show that on telly'.
He loved Martha, plain to see.

And Cordelia definitely would have been up for a risky experimental drug trial what with being already dead and what-not.
I too am reading websites about syphilis (hope DH doesn't check my browsing history 😶) and I think we have a robust explanation here.

peaceandove · 28/11/2022 13:30

And, now cured and travelled back to Nebraska, Cornelia discovers Eli in a 'marriage of convenience' with a Pawnee woman he has known from childhood.

LouisCatorze · 28/11/2022 13:48

Much as I thought it was one of the best things that's been on TV in years, I really hope they don't spoil it by commissioning a second series. The way it ended was heart-breaking but as it should have been.

I wish we'd discovered what happened to Eli though.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 28/11/2022 14:38

peaceandove perhaps the other woman who was enslaved so to speak with Touching Ground. Eli went back to liberate her from the school.

Bogglebrain · 28/11/2022 14:56

I love the alternate endings! Though I think it probably had the best outcome… just very sad. I would’ve loved to know what their final words to each other actually were (the camera pulled out so we didn’t hear them). Any suggestions?!

I agree about Emily Blunt’s make up - why was she so made up but the other character, Martha, not. It was very jarring.

I also Googled syphilis afterwards!

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 28/11/2022 15:04

Ah bogglebrain thinking of that might make me cry again and I have a zoom meeting shortly.

Must wrench myself back to boring old damp cold England and my desk. Tea break over.

WotsitsQuavers · 28/11/2022 15:19

My fanfiction

Eli meets a much younger Cheyanne woman and they go on to have children. Always an outsider, he now has his own tribe. His descendants will become like the Echo Hawk family (real life Pawnees) and starts to campaign about Native Americans and their plight (I.e. Pawnee Nation, IllumiNative).

White Moon marries one of Eli's daughter. Cornelia leaves some money to White Moon.

Old Eli travels to England as Cornelia lays dying. They talk about their lives and say goodbye. She asks him to bury her locket in the Great Plains.

Old Eli returns to America and look at the stars and think of Cornelia.

Quite possibly. But I tend to think that he travels back to his Nebraska homeland and finds his childhood friend, newly widowed and struggling to support her young children. So, out of compassion Eli marries her and raises her children as his own - but his heart is, and always will be, Cornelia's.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 29/11/2022 21:40

Watching Claudia Winkleman on her new show, wearing gloves, and my first thought is 'she's got syphilis'.

I need help.

FlosCampi · 30/11/2022 07:27

Awww it was so good and so disturbing, and I really want Eli to hug me into his red blankety cloak! I didn't understand why he couldn't go with Cornelia though?
