The English (2022)

In the quest for historical authenticity, the production sought the input of a women-led racial and social justice organization known as the "IllumiNative," and many native American Pawnee advisers were frequently consulted as fact-checkers throughout the shoot. As an executive producer, Emily Blunt has said that she was deeply honored when the show received a rare stamp of approval from this organization at the official series premiere.

I thought/hoped this was the case. It felt so obviously woman led, and that's what made it, I think. For me.

I am not reading all comments as I've only watched 2 episodes yet, but, oh, his voice, her face, the shades of spaghetti Westerns with a tiny hint of Dances with Wolves and the beautiful torn paper artwork behind the credits are all lovely to see and hear.

quirkychick · 17/11/2022 20:55

I've just binge watched this too. Beautiful cinematography and wonderful acting. Very touching and also quite harrowing at the same time. Really interesting slant of seeing it through the eyes of the Indians and the women.

Just watched episode 1. So dark. Watching Emily Blunt character shoot the pig reminded me of my gg grandmother, born in Illinois in 1860s-1870s. She was a crack shot, I have one of her shooting trophies. Women had to be tough to survive.

Just finished this and thought it was fantastic. Poor Cornelia, you just felt so desperately sorry for her by the end, when you realised the life to which she'd been condemned.

I reckon it's one of those dramas that you get more from on repeat viewing.

Ralph Spall's character was quite the most odious villain on screen for quite some time. I'm used to seeing him in more 'benign' roles, so didn't initially recognise him.

Excellent cast throughout. That some pedigree acting players were prepared to take on such brief cameo roles says all you need to know about the production, don't you think?

I haven't started this yet, but just wanted to say Rafe Spall was a villain in another Hugo Blick production: I think The Shadow Line. He was terrific; almost a pantomime baddie but actually genuinely frightening. I tend to think he's better in that kind of role than in the 'everybloke' parts he seems to play quite a lot of.

Black-Eyed Mog was chilling, though when you heard her story you could see how she might end up the way she did. I remember the actress when she played the lead in the comedy Surgical Spirit!

tootiredtobother · 18/11/2022 16:54

im finding it hard to make out all the dialogue, as previously said, it's mumbly in places
but otherwise brilliant

PuppyMonkey · 18/11/2022 16:59

I just watched it all this week - I don’t understand how anyone could possibly wait and watch it at BBC pace. It was so compelling, I had to find out what happened next. Absolutely breathtaking and beautiful mini series. I bawled my eyes out at the end. Such chemistry between the two leads.🔥

I had the subtitles on throughout for PP who said they thought it was mumbly.

Also had Alexa on hand to tell me what prairie oysters were. Grin

cushioncovers · 18/11/2022 17:06

I had to use subtitles as well

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 18/11/2022 17:07

I've eaten deep fried prairie oysters. I feel like I'll be able to connect to this show.

cushioncovers · 18/11/2022 17:08

Also I can't work out who burnt all of Thomas Trafford's hay and then took the scalps from his workers. Anyone know who it was ?

quirkychick · 18/11/2022 17:19

The fate of Cornelia and some of the women was desperately sad, through no fault of their own. Also, the fate of the Native Americans and all the butchery. It's easy to forget that the history of the west of the USA was so savage and lawless.

quirkychick · 18/11/2022 17:27

@cushioncovers the masked rider was the Sergeant with Myers and Flynn from the photo. His face/sanity presumably destroyed by disease, working for Melmont.

cushioncovers · 18/11/2022 17:34

Ah yes of course. Thanks.

quirkychick · 18/11/2022 18:27

Review Geek has a thorough summary of each episode.

PussyGaPaw · 19/11/2022 07:04

We finished watching this last night and I'm just completely blown away by it. So compelling, moving and beautiful - I honestly think it's the best thing I've seen on TV for absolutely ages. I'm in love with it ❤️. I've just read Lucy Mangan's review of it in the Guardian ant I think she has nailed it.

NotMyDayJob · 19/11/2022 10:37

Watched this and loved it. Would have liked a slightly different ending but can't say too much without spoilers but be interested if anyone else felt the same.

If anyone is interested in the American West I'd highly recommend the book Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee by Dee Brown. Non fiction, compelling and heartbreaking

That book has been on my list to read for such a long time. Think I'm going to get around to reading it now.

PuppyMonkey · 19/11/2022 14:33

Blimey - Nichola McAuliffe played Black Eyed Mog? Shocked but true! Shock

Blimey

rosegoldwatcher · 19/11/2022 14:36

I watched it all over two days and loved it!
Can't stop thinking about it and getting a bit choked up.

It just has to win an award or two, surely?

cushioncovers · 19/11/2022 14:58

I've actually watched it all twice now I loved it so much. Blush

LouisCatorze · 19/11/2022 16:39

@cushioncovers it's one of those dramas that just keeps on giving with rewatches, don't you think?

Have just recommended it to FIL.

cushioncovers · 19/11/2022 17:46

I definitely understood things better and saw different things on my second viewing.
