Very true. Demonstrated how imagination is the most powerful tool - as you say the massacre happening offscreen, just hearing the shooting was harrowing.

Was also a relief not to see sexual violence plastered all over the screen. Masterclass is drama and acting.

got to watch this,

I’m really not saying it was Anne of Green Gables 😆. Rather I’m holding it in comparison to a lot of other contemporary adult Netflix stuff/hit series that I have mostly swerved, that seem to have no qualms enacting rape and SA gratuitously to the extent of over reliance, rather than more subtly referencing or implying without graphic reenactment.
I’m not denying that there was violence in The English, there was a lot of imagery and symbolism (yes, tons of bloody scalps), more that to me, when it came to VAWG, it seemed to rely less on graphic depiction and violence for violence’s sake and more on inference which was ultimately more effective and impactful on the viewer. It was definitely distressing, but without relentless gore.
I’m trying to convey the difference I perceived in how it was handled, as compared to a lot of other stuff that tries to shock and traumatise.
Eg The Clearwater Creek massacre. We didn’t see that enacted. They could have done that, and it would have been awful, awful to watch. Instead it played out in the valley below while the others stayed put until the murderers passed back through and it was conveyed via Spall’s bloody torso… his mania … the machine gun. That was chilling, especially the latter when it resurfaced later on. So that imagery was extremely powerful, more so I think because we are given room to imagine the horror.

Fair enough, I take your points, in comparison to other dramas much of the violence was depicted either off screen or in our own imaginations.

Stick with it, try to remember who all the characters are because some of them seem quite random at first and the story line jumps about through time, but it all ( sort of ) falls into place in the end.

I don't want to know the answer to this 'wonder', but what you say makes me wonder if Toby Jones or Ciarran(sp?) Hinds will reappear. At present I'm watching one at a time.

Longwhiskers · 15/11/2022 09:19

I watched the first episode last night. Was wondering why they killed Toby Jones off so quickly which then made me think he’s going to come back in a back story type thing. Couldn’t understand how the vile hotel man knew so much about Emily Blunt’s character. Will continue watching!

Skyvemind · 15/11/2022 09:47

One thing I didn’t understand (and I realise it’s gross so I partly don’t want to be told) was, what was the ‘delicacy’ 🤢 her hotelier host served her in Ep. 1?
I also love how that beginning was so stark and weird and wuggggghhh just gave me the chills imagining landing up there in the absolute middle of nowhere with those malevolent creeps.
Like all good spaghetti westerns, it was shot in Spain apparently, mostly in the late afternoon to get those spectacular low sun shots.

Longwhiskers · 15/11/2022 11:37

@Skyvemind prairie oysters are calf testicles. They’re meant to be cooked on the fire with salt but the ones in the first episode looked raw!

LouisCatorze · 15/11/2022 13:22

I reckon it's one of those dramas that you get more from on repeat viewing.

Ralph Spall's character was quite the most odious villain on screen for quite some time. I'm used to seeing him in more 'benign' roles, so didn't initially recognise him.

Excellent cast throughout. That some pedigree acting players were prepared to take on such brief cameo roles says all you need to know about the production, don't you think?

Yes, Stephen Rea was excellent in it too as the Sheriff.
And another moving theme was Cornelia’s attachment to the young Pawnee boy, and his own mother’s defiance and courage … poignant and inspiring.

scaryplaguegirl · 15/11/2022 19:46

I've just binge watched this after reading the comments above. Wow, the story really stays with you. What I saw as a recurrent theme was the strong female characters and what they do to support their children. Very powerful and about time we had more dramas like this.

stillvicarinatutu · 16/11/2022 00:20

I'm almost through it in one night .....I'm soooooo Hopi g for a good end with retribution

cushioncovers · 16/11/2022 07:49

I'm watching it again from the start.

DuchessDandelion · 16/11/2022 08:29

Anyone else a little bit in love with Eli?

Hels20 · 16/11/2022 11:52

I thought Emily Blunt and Chaske Spencer were great in this. The supporting cast great too - especially C Hinds in first episode. Story a bit hard to follow but really great. Yes - am a bit in love with Eli…

Yes. I loved his character. I also like the actor I think he's handsome although I don't know anything about him. Shallow I know. He was in the Twilight movies.

I've never seen him in anything else but thought he was brilliant. Not sure I can bring myself to watch twilight but will check out his other stuff!

cushioncovers · 16/11/2022 14:49

Apparently the film Wild Indian is supposed to be good. He's in that.

Pleasedontdothat · 16/11/2022 19:02

Just finished this today and I absolutely loved it - it was desperately sad but also somehow optimistic.

I thought the relationship between the two main characters was beautifully portrayed, and the cameos from A-list actors were amazing. I also appreciated that it was a self-contained story and didn’t leave the audience hanging with a spurious cliff-hanger and second season setup.

stillvicarinatutu · 16/11/2022 22:18

I watched the least episode today and loved it - I felt so sad though for Cornelia. Her and Eli clearly loved each other. What happened to her was so so unfair. I loved Eli.

sevensocks · 16/11/2022 23:17

Just finished it, really enjoyed it but thought the last episode seemed rushed. The revelation of her illness and then meeting Malmont happened too quickly for me.

And why was Thomas killed off 'off screen'. The editing seemed odd. But sad it's finished.

sevensocks · 16/11/2022 23:34

If you enjoyed this you will probably like Godless. Also set in USA wild west . Really enjoyed that series too and another strong female lead character (played by lady Mary from Downton).

Youreeavinalaff · 16/11/2022 23:57

The music is beautiful, very Morricone-inspired, and the widescreen cinematography is gorgeous. Feels like an epic Western but with more of a female/complex slant. Eli is a fantastic character and actor, he has amazing screen prescence. Dialogue a little mumbly in places and hard to follow at times, I felt like maybe a lot was edited out, especially around episode 2 and 3. One actor was massively copying the mannerisms of Tom Hardy's character from Peaky Blinders which I didn't like. Wasn't convinced by the ending, but it was very moving and especially brought home the horrors of the Wild West and destruction of the indigenous people. Overall really enjoyed it.

LouisCatorze · 17/11/2022 07:13

I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't win lots of awards.

MarshaBradyo · 17/11/2022 07:15

It’s a curious aesthetic . Saturated and hyper real. I googled to see how they achieved it but not much came up on technique
