Chessie good you are finally getting your holiday!

I'm really pleased for Petra- I always like to see her do well, and I hope this is a good omen for the US Open. I've just seen that Caroline won.

Stef withdrew from the doubles- I always feel sorry for the partner in these circumstances- if Stef wins the singles, will he recompense Rune for possible 'loss of earnings' from not being able to continue with the doubles? GrinI think he should.

Good to see Salisbury and Ram in the final. Rajeev had a couple of tounaments, post Wimbledon, of playing with other people.

The doubles partnership dynamic always fascinates me Raahh - must be rubbish if your partner withdraws if they’re doing well in the singles. Also some players are more promiscuous than others Grin

It’s not the men’s final I was expecting but would be happy for either player to win - I do feel as if Stef hasn’t won anything for ages and Coric has had quite a lot of injuries I think

Hope you enjoy your long awaited holiday Chessie

Raahh · 21/08/2022 09:34

Fizzy there have been a few instances recently where players have done well in singles and dumped the doubles partner. I get that for some players, they were probably not expecting to get far in singles, and when they do they want to focus on one thing. It could be a 'big break'.

But a player like Tsitsipas must surely expect to be in the latter stages of a singles tournament, and he's not short of match practice, so isnt playing doubles for that. So in cases like his, I think it's wrong to commit to both, if you won't see it through. Unless Rune was just happy to be there, of course Grin

It would be a huge comeback for Coric, if he wins. Stef has had a very up and down few months (and I'm still not over the Kyrgios match at Wimbledon). Will either be a total whitewash, or a bit of a battle

Pretty anti-climatic women’s final…

Raahh · 21/08/2022 20:14

I was watching the doubles, then had to do dinner.
I was hoping Kvitova could win this, and it's not over yet Grinbut maybe it's a match too far.

I can't watch at the moment, so am score watching.

OP posts:
IceandIndigo · 21/08/2022 20:17

Kvitova just took a medical timeout, not sure what the issue was but she isn’t moving well.

Raahh · 21/08/2022 20:28

Oh dear, Petra. Hope she's ok.

OP posts:
ChessieFL · 21/08/2022 20:33

It’s not looking good for her.

IceandIndigo · 21/08/2022 20:34

I think it’s her hip flexor.

IceandIndigo · 21/08/2022 20:56

Well done Caroline!

JaneJeffer · 21/08/2022 22:43

Just put it on. The tiebreak seems to be going Coric's way.

JaneJeffer · 21/08/2022 22:49

Yes Tim look after the pennies Grin

JaneJeffer · 21/08/2022 23:40

Well done Borna!

Raahh · 22/08/2022 08:10

Congratulations to Borna- that's some comeback week he has had. I think the win puts him in a seeding position for the US Open- which will make a few breath a sigh of relief after his results in Cincy.

I saw a picture of Rafa practicing on Ashe - there's a charity match for Ukraine I think before the tournament. Already some controversy- Kostyuk has said she won't play ( the exhibition match,)because Russians/Belarusian players have been asked too.

OP posts:
Raahh · 22/08/2022 08:14

I think it's happening on the 24th- which is Ukraine Independence day, so really I can see her point that involving Russian players is probably not a very sensitive move.

I have seen that Zverev has officially withdrawn now from the US Open- I didn't expect him to play, but I think he was hoping he would be suitably recovered to give it a go.

It was a horrible injury though- and he's young enough to take his time coming back- rather than risk a long term issue, and further complications in the future.

It means Rafa will be seeded 2- unless he has a set back between now and next week and withdraws completely. And I'm not ruling that out, given his luck lately. But I'm hoping he at least gets through a couple of rounds in New York. Winning it would obviously be amazing. Grin.

It was a horrible injury for Zverev Raahh - hope he manages to recover

I read somewhere that Rafa hasn’t lost a Grand Slam match this year - at first I was confused because he didn’t win Wimbledon but he didn’t lose a match either (ok he did withdraw injured but he didn’t lose - clutching at straws!)

I just hope that I get to see some of his matches - if he gets that far!

Well done to Coric - I think the win does mean that he’ll be seeded for the us open

Fizzywinegum · 23/08/2022 14:55

I’ve just been listening to the latest Tennis Podcast - they were talking about the Gerber insurance baby at Cincinnati - they seem to think that it was even bigger and more scary than usual this year - it’s not just us Grin

I’m hoping that Rafa gets a kind draw at the us open - it will be good to watch a tournament with no Djok (although him being defaulted a few years ago was one of my tennis highlights - him being deported from Australia is also up there - I’m just a meanie!)

Hope everyone is OK - it’s quite hot and humid here - my least favourite sort of weather - I think I need to live somewhere cold!

Raahh · 23/08/2022 15:21

Fizzy I will join you on the meanie bench Grin. I was delighted when he was defaulted, I just wish he had accepted 'no jab, no play' and the whole fiasco in Australia had been avoided- it makes him look like a victim of something in a way, I don't buy that he was mislead by anyone- his team knew the rules, he lied about his status, they tried to get round things. It could all have been avoided.

There's less than a week til the US Open starts, so I really hope there will be no last minute back-down by the authorities.

I also hope Rafa gets a kind draw- it would be good too see him last a few rounds at least.

Good to see that Domi got through a round in Winston-Salem, against JJ Wolf, one of the newbie Americans. It was very tight though, score wise. He faces Grigor next- so coud be 50/50 there, really. Grigor may have the edge.

OP posts:
Raahh · 23/08/2022 15:23

JJ Wolf has terrible hiar, though. A proper mullet. Or he did last time i saw him play Grin

OP posts:
Raahh · 23/08/2022 15:29

Kyrgios' court case got underway - and is now adjourned til October. His team wanted a delay for 3 months, but the judge was having none of it, apparently.

It's a shame he didn't have to be there for it though. In the absence of Djok, Dick is the new 'favourite' with the pundits - and they will be obsessed with him again at the US Open. I hope he opens his mouth and shoves his feet in it. (And that Mo is nowhere near to give pep talksAngry).

OP posts:
Fizzywinegum · 23/08/2022 15:45

Yes Raahh I was also going to say that I hope Kyrgios loses in the first round but I’d been mean enough already Grin

I’ve just seen on the BBC news website that the 700 drinks woman from Wimbledon is suing Kyrgios for defamation - he’s got trouble coming from all angles!

I really hope that the US Open don’t back down and let Djok play - it’s his choice if he doesn’t follow the rules Angry

JaneJeffer · 23/08/2022 15:54

700 drinks woman from Wimbledon is suing Kyrgios for defamation
Kate Middleton? Grin

Raahh · 23/08/2022 15:56

I saw that 700 drinks woman was suing - go her GrinThat's so funny.
I don't blame her- she should get together with the person he spat at. Angry.I'm still really annoyed that he basically got away with that- which you would have thought since Covid, he would have been in big trouble.

Mac is also getting on my nerves, because he is constantly in the media moaning about Djok not being able to play- and I don't want to hear that for 2 weeks. He needs to get over it. In fact, it should be a banned topic once it gets to Monday- it's really not fair on the players that are there.

OP posts:
JaneJeffer · 23/08/2022 15:57

Wolf's mullet is no more Raahh I watched a bit of the match last night but the picture quality on Prime was very bad for some reason. It looked like a match from years ago and I wasn't sure if it was live at first. Mind you I had a splitting headache and brain fog so it might just have been me.
