Sewing Bee - all the buzz, none of the sting!

A thread for discussion of Sewing Bee with no criticism of the contestants' personalities, mannerisms, or looks - just their sewing and designs, please.

Who's everybody's favourite for the win? I think Brogan's going to get it, but I'd be happy for any of them to win.

Just caught up with this - I'm so glad that I did decide to stay up and watch it before I got spoiled for the big twist. Patrick welling up set me off too.

I think the final wouldn't be right without Brogan or Man Yee and I'm really looking forward to seeing what they do, but I think Annie has the momentum.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 23/06/2022 00:25

they are all worthy of the final
i am glad no one went

DoubleGauze · 23/06/2022 05:40

They're really continuing the theme of working them extra hard this year!

I can't say that I completely agree with the decision to keep all four sewists for the final as it seemed a little unfair on previous bees. Particularly Liz from s6 , she made a flawless dress in her semi final , but was still sent home. But I am looking forward to seeing what they make in the final , it should be a good one.

I liked they're origami dresses this week , but I did prefer the origami blouses in s5. Possibly asking them for a complete outfit rather than one piece had compromised their abilities to make something more complex.

I hope their final tasks are reasonable so that we get to see some amazing (finished) garments next week.

I wasn't expecting that because it' not been done before but I'm truly delighted that they are all in the final. I did think it would be Brogan because they kept emphasising that her dress wasn't origami enough but on the other hand Man-Yee's dress wasn't great either.

I loved Annie's dress - it looked high fashion. Wasn't keen on the shape of Debra's top part.

Apart from the trousers last week, Annie doesn't seem to have had the sewing fails recently that the others have had. I have it in mind who would you like to make you a special occasion outfit and she's the one I would go to for something both stylish and you'd get it made in time.

2Rebecca · 23/06/2022 07:08

I think that when the final challenge is something where you have to design your own pattern or spend hours looking for something on the internet that you wouldn't be likely to ever do again it's not really amateur dressmaking. If the judges think origami outfits are so wonderful they could have that as the middle challenge.

ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave · 23/06/2022 10:58

Annie's dress was beautiful and I'm so glad she got GOTW.

Also really glad to see all four of them in the final!

It was fabulous, wasn't it @ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave ?

Really, really stunning. (Also the fascinator - superb touch)

ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave · 23/06/2022 11:23

I could see any number of celebrities wearing it on the red carpet.

I really liked the colours of Debra's but the shape didn't do it for me, and I found the length awkward.

I thought Debra’s was beautiful and really hit the brief, but definitely a runway piece rather than something I can imagine someone wearing to a party or something. Annie’s both hit the brief and was something wearable by the average woman to my eye.
Man Yees collar was technically interesting and her trim was nice but quite subtle, but there didn’t appear to be much fitting to the model. I imagine those details on a more form-fitting dress without the crane stuck to the front might have been more what the judges expected?
Brogans dress was beautiful and looked well put together, but for me missed the key part of origami which is the crisp folds.
I’m glad they all went through, I think they’re all fantastic sewists. For me, Annie to win, she’s getting better and better every week, though I wouldn’t be upset by any of them winning.

ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave · 23/06/2022 11:51

I only ever judge by normal wearability. I have zero understanding (or interest in) catwalk fashion - most of it looks ridiculous to me! I can see Debra's had something about it, though. Lots of impact, as Patrick likes to say.

I agree. I like clothes that work with the body not fight against it. Debra's looked all out of proportion to me although the blossoms were clever. I thought Annie's worked really well although it is not my kind of thing and I know nothing and care even less about high fashion and cat walk style

BattenbergdowntheHatches · 23/06/2022 12:33

I think Annie has found her niche and it’s bright, glam dresses. She’s improved so much.

Man Yee had a bit of a howler last night, bless her. Saying they, her skirt in the transformation challenge was the only one that met the brief (imho). I love the show, was in bits last night… 😭

JemimaTab · 23/06/2022 16:44

Sara Pascoe is really not hitting the right spot for me. I find I’m cringing through her links - they’re so corny.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 23/06/2022 19:18

I've just caught up. Annie's MTM was stunning. She's really come into her own.

I would 100% wear Deborah's dress to a party! But then I like more sculptural clothes that aren't tight fitting. I want her to win but Annie is doing really well too.

SBAM · 23/06/2022 20:27

@milkmilkeverywhere as someone who’s permanently chilly my first thought with Debra’s sleeves was they’d get so crumpled under a cardi! Gorgeous dress though, perhaps a thermal vest underneath would do 🤔

3luckystars · 23/06/2022 21:23

Well I loved it and was welling up too when I saw Patrick. They all deserve a place and I can’t wait for the final.

just how difficult was the kimono pattern though if those 4 struggled! I can’t imagine anyone trying it, you’d need about 20 meting fabric and will definitely make a balls of it.

Believeitornot · 23/06/2022 22:46

I liked Debra’s MTM and recognised the top from a pattern I’ve seen online, so not proper origami. I actually have the pattern but haven’t sewn it yet as I can’t imagine what fabric to use.

I think Debra or Annie should win! I felt Brogan and Man Yee were given a pass. Judges should have picked one to go home. I think Man Yee edges it over Brogan.

Hey, I only just caught up on the last 2 episodes and I LOVE that no one went home this week. And I loved the last 2 made to measure challenges.

I'd prefer a points based competition as some has mentioned before where no one goes hom and people can have good weeks and bad etc. However, having said that, some people really struggle with the format (I would!) and are begging to go home early IMO.

So, i'm feeling inspired to resume my pencil skirt following a months long tantrum. I just need to take it in again, figure out how to attach a lining then the waistband....Honestly, it takes me a very long time to make anything, I could never ever do anything in 3.5 hours.

NoToLandfill · 24/06/2022 22:39

What a great episode!
I actually do sew Sashiko so I was super interested in this episode.

I felt that ManYee was the only one who actually understood it. Brogan just didn't seem to get it at all.

Debra's mount Fuji dress was WOW. I could see that being sold in Liberty for £800. Truly magnificent dress.

I still miss Marni, she should still be in!

Emotionalsupportviper · 25/06/2022 10:15

I agree about Marni - she was to skilled!

3luckystars · 25/06/2022 11:48

Marni was brilliant alright, I really liked her. She should come back next year.

I LOVED Debra's dress!

When I saw it "drawn" I thought it wouldn't be up to much, but the finished garment was gorgeous (not as good as Annie's though).
