Sewing Bee - all the buzz, none of the sting!

A thread for discussion of Sewing Bee with no criticism of the contestants' personalities, mannerisms, or looks - just their sewing and designs, please.

Who's everybody's favourite for the win? I think Brogan's going to get it, but I'd be happy for any of them to win.

Esme's book is also on Audible, narrated by her too.

Thanks for the recommendation. I've just ordered the audiobook from my local library.

SierraSapphire · 30/06/2022 21:17

I was surprised it was Annie, I thought that Man Yee might have the edge. I also thought the "make something you'd wear to a party" judgement was a bit unfair on Debra, as many of us tone it down a lot at middle age, and the more glitzy stereotypically younger party clothes of the other sewers are just not appropriate.

Yes but it was Esme who was judging. She of the Amorphous dress ! 😀

I have got to get that. Esme's voice is pure ASMR to me.

I wanted Debra to win too but tbf it's a competition. she could have made anything, it's not like she had to rigidly stick to what she would actually pick in a shop.

herecomesthepun · 01/07/2022 08:01

Also, how gorgeous is Annie. I know it's not a looks competition but she really is so beautiful!

Cuck00soup · 01/07/2022 21:03

I've also reserved Esme's book from the library. Except I've got to wait until the middle of August!!

She must be popular

LIZS · 02/07/2022 09:49

Rewatching final this am, were the final models the only ones this series not wearing coordinating masks?

LIZS · 02/07/2022 09:54

Nor the family, friends and returning sewers.

3luckystars · 02/07/2022 12:34

Oh Esme has a book?? I’m getting it!! I love her and also Patrick. (Different types of love)

great series, I loved it all.

lollipoprainbow · 02/07/2022 13:37

Made me quite teary watching, I'm not a sewer but I love the wholesomeness of it all.

Personally don't think brogan should have been in the final and her weakness really showed this week, a messy first challenge, hideous ruffles and fabric on the second (personally I think they should have chosen each other's fabrics) and the made to measure didn't fit the brief at all it was a play suit, surprised the judges didn't say this.

I think the professional models would have shown off the made to measures better, Debra's friend clomped down the catwalk!

Really wanted man yee to win.

Yawn why are we so hung up on looks !

And yet you are slagging off Debra's friend "clomping" down the runway and saying they needed professional models? 🥴

I was only saying something nice as a side point.

NutellaEllaElla · 02/07/2022 15:14

There's no need to police anybodies comments on here dearies. Less drama, more llama, come on now.

JellyBellyNelly · 02/07/2022 16:27

She was only in it because she had no chance of winning it. She’d already lost a couple of weeks ago. It really was only about adding some excitement to proceedings and making good television.

I would have liked Debra to win.

Cuck00soup · 03/07/2022 12:14

I think Patrick said something in the semi-final about Brogan being the best stitcher and until the last episodes everything she produced was neat and well sewn. My guess is that's why they kept her in for the final.

She relied heavily on cottons, ginghams and lawns though which are mostly easier to sew and came unstuck with other fabrics. Man Yee used a variety of fabrics throughout the competition, mostly successfully and I think Brogan realised she needed to up her game. Her style isn't for me, she is good at her thing and I admire her for trying to be more ambitious.

Rosehugger · 03/07/2022 12:24

Annie thoroughly deserved the win.

  • The final garment was a real showstopper, absolutely stunning and beautiful
  • She upped her game all the way through. Three garments of the week where as Brogan, say, shone early on and tailed off slightly
  • Debra is a great sewer but constantly had weird fabric and colour choices and her garments made me feel rather queasy at times. She was my least favourite out of the final four
  • Man Yee made more mistakes

It was a fantastic final but such a clear choice of winner for me.

I ordered Esme's book and it arrived yesterday, looks fab and I can't wait to start it this evening with a glass of wine.

TherapistInATabard · 03/07/2022 23:50

Finally got a chance to watch the final. I would have been happy with Man Yee but loved Annie.

I’ve gone back to watch all the series from the start. I’d forgotten pretty much everything about series 1. I think I prefer the transformation challenge being a staple high street garment. I’m on series 2 now and remember all these contestants. I really miss Claudia and really miss the history bits.

SoupDragon · 04/07/2022 07:16

I think they put more history bits in this year compared to the last couple of years. I wonder if they had feedback.

Rosehugger · 04/07/2022 12:21

Claudia was brilliant, but is probably too much in demand on other shows.

I disagree. I didn't think Claudia was particularly good in that role. I liked Joe Lycett and I like Sara Pascoe. They're both very kind to the contestants and quite gentle with the humour. Also they know when to step back and not make it about them.

I hope so! I really like those bits

LIZS · 04/07/2022 13:05

I liked Claudia but think Sara combines her ditziness and random comments with Joe's more eclectic moments rather well. I would like more focus on the sewing (maybe an online walkthrough and troubleshoot for each technique in the week's pattern challenge as the description is too quick) and some soft furnishing/upcycling projects.

lollipoprainbow · 04/07/2022 17:54

Personally can't stand Claudia, I loved Joe he was funny and kind.
