I don't understand why arrow firing youth targetted the man who shouts "Scab" first if they are both looking for spycop. Shouldn't they be on the same side?

Andy train driver head bashed via spade

cant be spy cop. He’s too wimpy

Ah but maybe that's what they want you to think 😉

Penguinsaregreat · 23/06/2022 23:19

I can't see it being Mrs Sparrow as spy cop because when she went round to Julie's house, she reminisced about the 3 of them going out together (her, Julie, and Julie's sister who's name escapes me). So all of them grew up in the village or at least lived their before they were married.

I’m not sure why some PPs are mentioning the number of middle aged white men in this. The story revolves around Nottinghamshire pit villages. Most miners at that time, living in those villages, were white men. Who exactly do they think should be playing these roles? There is diversity in the cast but primarily this is about working class miners, most of whom were white and would eventually grow up to become middle aged white men. I can’t see any issue with the casting on that basis.

I mentioned the middle aged white men very early on on this thread. It wasn't a complaint about casting or lack of diversity. It was simply that so many were introduced so quickly that I couldn't keep tab on who was who. I don't like having to distinguish by thinking 'oh the new Tricks Chap was the murdered NUM one, the footman from Downton was ... etc'

I know what you mean. I have difficulty recognising faces at the best of times but it took me ages to figure out who was who (I still have to ask DH from time to time). They do all look a bit similar to me.

I thought Stephen Thompkinson was great (and his accent seemed good to me) I first remember him in Drop the Dead Donkey in 1990.
There is something about all the characters having awful hair. Even the strange dyed area on the Met guy.
I presume it's to show that they are 'left behind' / haven't recovered their self-respect since the closing of the mines

CaptainMyCaptain · 24/06/2022 12:18

The hair styles look about right to me.

floweringpoppies · 25/06/2022 16:33

Just caught up! I am enjoying it and wondering who will be spy cop. I am having to concentrate a bit more than usual at remembering who is who!

CousinKrispy · 25/06/2022 20:13

Helen said something about her safety in the phone convo with DCI Salisbury, so I think maybe she's in Witness Protection and that's why her file is restricted?

Loved that goofy "finger of suspicion" song.

Saucery · 25/06/2022 21:03

Moxie! Shock

I think Helen informed on someone, possibly someone close to her (Ian?) and is in Witness Protection because of it.

absolutelynotfabulous · 26/06/2022 10:40

Not sure why "Moxie" would off himself if he only has weeks to live?

I'm still loving it but I think it's getting too complicated and not in a good way. If it weren't for the stellar cast I think it would be a dud.

Because he doesn't want to spend his last two weeks being interrogated? He knows too much and doesn't want to give anyone away? He can't stand the guilt?

Whoop. On tonight

Just wandering by to say that in RL St Clair was the name of an eminent scholar who wrote about the Romantic poets…..……

…..probably a complete coincidence but it’s been making my antennae twitch a bit.

Ooooh! And Ian made quite a thing about correcting it to ‘Sinclair’ in the first episodes.

I have my thoughts about him also. I can’t recall what episode it was but out of the blue he recited some poetry and it caught my attention as being a strange thing to do at the time.

DuncinToffee · 27/06/2022 20:24

Intriguing, thanks Halsall and Jelly

KatKoot · 27/06/2022 21:00

Argh! Being delayed because of Wimbledon. Just sat down in anticipation to watch.

Halsall · 27/06/2022 21:01

Phew, just got in a slight tizz about Wimbledon about still being on BBC1 - they’ve shunted Sherwood to BBC2….

Crackercrazy · 27/06/2022 21:01

It’s starting now on BBC 2!

KatKoot · 27/06/2022 21:02

Thanks guys have switched over now. Will catch up after this episode!
