Whoops @LadyEloise1 that was meant to be! Good guess here 😂

Loved the younger actors too, I thought they did brilliant against some real powerhouse acting.

They should do a series in lots of different places. IE Manchester - murder at Pride weekend; Durham - murder in the the cathedral; Aberystwyth - murder at the university etc etc!!

I’ve avoided this thread till now as was working last night so just watched

so Scott killed Gary his uncle as they had a loving family,it and he didn’t

is that right

feel a bit met at ending

nothing to do with strike or miners

don’t think there will be a s2

wonder what day next as spy cop revealed over the past 30yrs

a long time to be undercover

I think the Pointlessness was the point. We all expected him to be making a political statement but he was just a messed up young man. There was no link between the people he shot at except 'they were liars and hypocrites probably'. Meanwhile he was tearing the community apart and opening old wounds. It was a genius twist.

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/06/2022 17:08

Oh I stopped it when credits came up

I didn't expect a political motive per se. I did think it was going to be because he felt unloved. However, the other episodes had such momentum leading to cliffhangers/reveals, and there was such a build up over the five hours, that for the sixth episode to declare all shots to be random and without any connection -that felt underwhelming. I do understand disaffected youth is realistic but did not think Gary was such a local hero/big man, he needed bringing down a leg of two by planned homicide.
I had previously thought it was going to be that Scott had discovered
a) he was adopted and/or his birth Mum had abandoned him because she had discovered his real Dad was a spycop, who had impregnated her when he was already married.

Then I thought that Helen was his Mum, who had escaped with him from dv, but could not cope bringing him alone or was scared she was traces of his grandfather's violence in him.

Was also expecting Kevin's son to be Julie's son-in-law from a dalliance with Jenny, who kept the baby regardless.

Then

BeenThereBoughtTheTeeShirt · 29/06/2022 17:36

A leg of two? A leg or two!
Tickeets Keets all Keats more credible now! Blush

LadyEloise1 · 29/06/2022 17:55

You're disappointed so with the way it ended @BeenThereBoughtTheTeeShirt Smile

You might have a new job as a scriptwriter.

CrossPurposes · 29/06/2022 20:00

GorgonzolaSouffle · 28/06/2022 22:58

Very complicated
far too many characters

could have done 4 episodes.

4/10

I'd probably give it more than 4/10 but I didn't like that Ian essentially told Julie that Daphne was spycop and the Andy storyline didn't add anything apart from a shocking end to episode 2 and by episode 6 was forgotten (I know it is based on real events but only slightly).

diddl · 29/06/2022 20:24

I hated that Kevin was blamed for everything.

Obviously he shouldn't have left his post, but it wasn't him who told anyone!

He certainly never set the fire & it was Martin who ran in thinking that his dad must be involved!

Tallisker · 29/06/2022 21:24

Still don't know who came out of the loo in the warehouse and got set upon by the blokes which caused the gas fire to be shoved into something flammable. Anyone? Dressed in white shirt like a copper.

Just another copper I thought

I'm guessing a Met copper?

Penguinsaregreat · 29/06/2022 21:41

I thought it was excellent. Very realistic. I imagine most murders occur because of no other reason than wrong place wrong time.

diddl · 29/06/2022 21:45

If they had asked Kevin or Jenny if they had told anyone about their tryst that would have led them straight to Daphne!

The Keats thing on the screen was too contrived wasn't it?

BeenThereBoughtTheTeeShirt · 29/06/2022 22:23

A peg or two, even!
Hate autocorrect.
Feel sorry for Daphne now.
The ticket display not realistic, as in the UK do not tend to pitch parents against each other like that. Although in Europe have had to endure a parent auction before where you all bidded for kids' artwork. It was grim.
I think the Andy storyline was used, solely because two murders in such a short time frame and both being in the forest, was a fascinating twist of fate. Saw people insisting it would not happen when in real life, it did (albeit they did not meet). Add to that the family not wanting any part of it (irl it was the dad who then died in prison following a hunger strike. Never gave reason for killing his daughter but he was broke and she had asked him to leave her house as she was just married). So it was heavily fictionalised but no connection. Love Adeel Akhtar. could have had his wife kill herself as she had put up child from a male spycop up for adoption pre Andy/Neel and was scared of it all coming out as had not told her family or future family. But then Scott (or Andy) would not have been played by the same actor.
He found out he was adopted but mum had committed suicide and why. So took out Gary and lawyer for digging it all up, Andy for not being approachable as far as his dead Mum was concerned and Daphne as revenge for Mr Sparrow the male spycop knocking his mum up.

That may have tied things up neater but you totally miss the nuance of JGs writing... That art can reflect real life as the original two murderers, one never gave a reason or closure and the other was deemed insane.

diddl · 30/06/2022 07:20

Hate autocorrect.

Not as much as Daphne though!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 01/07/2022 08:21

i also avoided this thread while watching
i prefer in a way not to read any speculations
i enjoyed this so much.
all excellent cast,
no let downs whatsoever

Summerof22 · 03/07/2022 07:40

@diddl , I haven’t read the whole thread so maybe it’s been said already, but I would have expected her to have a different mobile for communicating with the other undercover cops, not your day to day phone.

Yes I agree. One that was hidden away somewhere.

Well tbh I wouldn't have expected them to have an up to date telephone number for her if she had stopped working for them 30(?) yrs ago!

Summerof22 · 03/07/2022 08:47

@diddl , that too!

ChinnyTroubles · 03/07/2022 08:51

Thought it was good! Great actors in it.
My only niggles were - couldn't see the point of Cinderellas mum being there in last episode, didn't add anything.

And when Mr sparrow crashed into the killer who was on motorbike , why did Ian n Kevin just sit in the car? The car that was right there at the scene. They sat there long enough for killer to drag himself up, reload his crossbow and other people to come out of their houses before they got out of the car!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 03/07/2022 09:02

hmm i spose daphne didnt originally have a mobile phone

Yes. Nobody would have had one in 1984, not like that anyway. I suppose you have to suspend some disbelief.

Cinderella's Mum was a complete Red Herring. We all expected it to be relevant but I think the story was just misdirection.
