Sitcoms/Shows with Perfect Endings

Frasier has just aired its final episode for the umpteenth time this morning on C4.

I always enjoy the last episode: it's nostalgic, ties up everyone's stories in a satisfying way and sees Frasier 'go get the girl'.

It occurs to me that it's a rare thing to have a show or sitcom end without being divisive and broadly loved by the fans.

Are there any other shows that people feel are well done in terms of finales and endings?

HIMYM being a good example of one almost universally poorly received!

Detectorists.

But also the final minute of the TV adaptation of Pillars of the Earth, which was intensely moving and a wonderful improvement on the ending of the book.

Hustle

As mentioned above, Big Bang Theory. And Blackadder.

Not How I Met Your Mother.

Veep - we get to see just how monstrous she is, and just how magnificent (the amazing speech taking down Tom James' Chief of Staff). And the Tom Hanks link is brilliant.

The Office (U.K. version) - Brent meeting a genuinely nice woman and finally telling Finchy to fuck off, and of course Tim and Dawn getting together. Nearly 20 years on and that scene still makes me well up.

YY to Cabin Pressure and Schitt’s Creek

Green Wing series ended perfectly. I loved the ambiguity of it…. And then they ruined it forever with the Christmas special.

Friends did it quite well I think.

Only Fools and Horses was perfect until they brought it back.

Best ending ever was Six Feet Under (obviously not a sitcom). Amazing.

SFU absolutely best ever ending. Also:

UK Office
Mum
Him and Her

Charmed..do think season 7 ending been nice considering the mess of a season that followed. And shame they weren't allowed to use pictures of Prue.

Being Human..they finally got what they wanted. Sort of. Did like the last shot of the mantle piece

Pushing Daisies. Loved how lovely it was!

littleburn · 04/06/2022 17:54

The Sopranos. It was a pretty unpopular ending at the time, but I think it was perfect.

GaiaWise · 04/06/2022 18:04

Agree This Life ending was genius.

WingBingo · 05/06/2022 11:37

Episodes had a very satisfying and clever ending.

Fernticket · 05/06/2022 19:54

Blackadder, really moving and really makes you think.
Friends.
MASH
Still Game.

Andylion · 07/06/2022 16:59

Did anyone watch Newhart? Hilarious ending.

SherbetDips · 08/06/2022 16:42

Once upon a time, hated s7 think s6 wrapped the show beautifully. BUT the ending for the whole show was good.

Pixies74 · 08/06/2022 18:34

The Americans. Loved the whole show (with maybe the exception of the fifth series) and the ending was amazing. So emotional (and a bit depressing really!) that noone ended up with a happy ending... And they managed it without killing off any characters. Felt so sorry for Stan ❤️

I agree that Frasier would’ve been better to end with a Lana reunion, Frasier had a big epiphany that it was she he loved not Claire, and then it kind of disappeared after that crap Don Juan in Hell episode.

Friends had gone massively downhill by the end so it was suitably limp and unfunny IMO.

Mum was brilliant all the way through and then kind of dropped off suddenly for me in the last few episodes. Glad they sauntered off in to the trees though, in terms of where the characters ended up I was pleased.

SATC perfect ending, films and AJLT don’t exist in SATC canon for me.

First series of Russian Doll ending (and series in its entirety) was excellent.

Detectorists by a country mile.

(Looking forward to the one-off special due later this year)

Tinkletwat · 09/06/2022 15:24

Madmen

GlitteryGreen · 09/06/2022 15:31

@DasAlteLeid Nooooo I don't think Lana and Frasier went together at all!

Tbh though I don't think any of his various matches through the years really struck as perfect. Charlotte was OK but I just found the whole thing a bit rushed and felt that she'd just been introduced to give him a happy ending and tie things off.

Aw I LOVED the end of Detectorists. Every single episode of that show was perfect.

Fernticket · 09/06/2022 22:48

Brooklyn 99. Brilliant and appropriate ending.

Brooklyn 99. Brilliant and appropriate ending.

After watching the ending of Brooklyn 99 I knew I had to come on here and mention it. I smiled all the way through. Thought it was a perfect ending to the show.

Supersee · 10/06/2022 07:22

The Affair.

S1&2 were great, then it went off the boil. The last episode wrapped it up nicely.

PrincessScarlett · 11/06/2022 14:25

Definitely The Office (UK version). Tim and Dawn getting together was just perfectly written and every time I hear Alison Moyet's 'Only You' it reminds me of them.

mum2jakie · 12/06/2022 20:19

UK Office and Mum. Both make me cry with happiness 😍

icelolly99 · 14/06/2022 10:05

Derry Girls, Detectorists, A Place to Call Home,
Car Share, Roger and Val have just got in - made me cry that one.
