Your memory is very different to mine! Plus there were many Janes in my year at school. There were two in my form!
I was horrifically bullied by someone - vindictive name calling, gangs of kids being horrible with a ringleader just like Angela. Has impacted my entire life. Teachers sided with my bully as she was blonde and pretty and sport and popular.
To me this was very real

I was born three years after eleven. I'm a Jane. In my school there were two in the year above me and one below. My cousin is a Jayne.
It's probably the most seventies name ever.

Figgygal · 03/06/2022 17:07

I know a 5 year old Jane
They do still exist

PurpleButterflyWings · 03/06/2022 17:18

Just finished ep 4. It was soooooooooooo good! NGL - I am obsessed with it now! Much better than season 3 IMO. (And right up there with seasons 1 & 2! REALLY looking forward to the rest of the episodes. Smile

Sorry I am not participating on here much. I don't want to see any spoilers. Grin

Not Jane nor Jayne were in the top 50 girl names in Indiana in 1972.
Not common.
Janet made top 50 in Illinois, I suppose.

lljkk · 03/06/2022 17:40

Sorry, that's a list of top 100 names by sex.
Janet is also in the top 100 in Kentucky, for 1971 births.

Loopytiles · 03/06/2022 18:05

jane is a great 80s name!

Kanaloa · 03/06/2022 19:32

I actually think Jane is a lovely name - it’s one of my girls’ middle names! Maybe not in the top 50 in Indiana in the 70s but does it matter? Some people will always have names outside of the top 50. I mean was Erica in the top 50 in Indiana in the 1970s? Was Dustin? Or Eden, or Robin?

lljkk · 03/06/2022 20:51

Point only works for Dustin, Lucas

1975 Indiana, Erica was #63
1972 Indiana, Michael was #1, William was #9
1968 IN Robin was #44, Nancy was #47
1967 Steven was #15

In 1966, Indiana, Jane was #72, falls out of top 100 after that.
The dataset stops in 1960, so I don't know when Jane fell out of top 100 in CA, before 1960 anyway.

My original point is substantially proven; Jane was quite old fashioned name for a 14-15yo kid in 1986 in California to have. I knew. I was there.

I am surprised about Janice being in top 100 so much. I only know one for sure, my aunt, born 1940s! Maybe Jan's are mostly Janice, I've known many, born 1940s.

Kanaloa · 03/06/2022 21:32

So Dustin is equally unusual. And realistically does it matter? There will always be kids who have a more old fashioned or unusual name. Some kids will also have more popular names. Seems like you’ve substantially proven a pointless fact really? It’s a classic name that some kids will always be called.

Kanaloa · 03/06/2022 21:39

I will say I’m surprised there will be a fifth series! I thought they really could have wrapped it up this series. I’ve already been guessing what will be in the ending. Agree with other people’s guesses that Murray might die.

lljkk · 03/06/2022 21:40

Dustin was probably a new-fangled name for a kid in 1986 to have.
Jane was quite old fashioned name for a 14-15yo kid in 1986 in California to have.
The name Jane stood out a lot. Dustin not so much.

Kanaloa · 03/06/2022 21:42

But it doesn’t really matter, does it? The name obviously existed, some people will have been called Jane. Why is it relevant or important to the show at all that one of the characters is called Jane?

lljkk · 03/06/2022 21:55

I'm only dying on this specific hill because it's so easy to stake a solid claim on.
I kind of like the name Jane, btw, but that's irrelevant. I'm not posting about what I like. just on the specific point, was Jane a fairly naff name for a 14-15yo kid in California to have in 1986... yeah, it kind of was. It's part of the atmosphere that someone of us like about watching Stranger Things, nostalgia, to notice things like this.

Back to spoilers, how many episodes do we expect in volume II ? Because there are a zillion loose ends to tie up, right? has anyone come around to liking Antonov, especially after he spoke about his son? I'm wondering if this is a new telly trend, if I'll see it in other shows, to introduce bad / weird characters who then turn into good guys. Murray, Steve... I didn't like Hopper initially. Heck, even Billy seems to have been redeemed.

maybe Yuri will redeem himself, too.
I've just read it's almost 2000 miles to fly Alaska to Kamchatka
lljkk · 03/06/2022 21:55

pah, I forget about that formatting problem, irk

Kanaloa · 03/06/2022 22:00

But is it a problem to you? Does it matter? There’s no need for every single character to have top 10 80s names, is there? Just like how you might meet a child named Jane today even though it’s an uncommon name for today’s day and age.

Kanaloa · 03/06/2022 22:01

And maybe Jane was ‘kind of a naff name’ for a child in the 80s but nobody’s denied that. Just that it doesn’t really cause an issue for the TV show or matter.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 03/06/2022 22:45

My understanding is there isn't a 5th season they've just split season 4 for some reason.

Afaik there are two more final episodes to go of season 4 (both of which will be long episodes) released on 1st of July.

Dd and I started watching it again from the beginning tonight 🤦‍♀️😂 we're a tad obsessed!!

I think El created another portal on the day she escaped, not sure why the upside down got stuck on that day though. I'm guessing 001 has been biding his time since El banished him there.

I also wonder if Els speech regressed a lot after the massacre due to trauma and also due to being more isolated after the massacre. Her speech in the first series is really under developed.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 03/06/2022 22:46

Oh and I was born in 1978 and my middle name is Jane 😁 I know loads of people my age with Jane got a middle name, I think it was the May/Mae of its time.

Kanaloa · 03/06/2022 22:51

Oh I knew there were two more episodes coming in July but I thought there was also a series 5. I hope there isn’t to be honest! I think they could wrap it up nicely just here.

I wondered if the other portal was maybe Will. I really expected when they were speeding away in the pizza van for like the cars chasing them to be exploded/thrown in the air and then the camera to pan away to Will with his nose bleeding.

Danikm151 · 03/06/2022 23:21

It is planned for a series 5 but it’s difficult to see where that could lead. Series 4 is the beginning of the end

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 03/06/2022 23:58

Oh I'm disappointed there will be a series 5, that feels like they're dragging it out.

And I say that as a massive ST fan.

ChompChamp · 04/06/2022 18:51

I found it a bit of an odd watch, in that the core story of the season (revolving around Max, Dustin, Nancy, Steve et al) was fantastic, but the others (Hopper, Eleven, Mike & Will’s group) had a lot of attention with little actually happening for long stretches. On paper, it’s a little bit of a bloated mess compared to the early days of the show.

Yet I still found it really gripping, it’s probably as engaged as I’ve been since season 1. It’s fantastically produced and there really are a lot of edge-of-your-seat moments.

And Steve Harrington is still inexplicably wonderful.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 04/06/2022 19:06

Yaaa there's a season 5 which will be the last...which is good least not dragging it out for years and losing the plot more and more..

ImAvingOops · 04/06/2022 22:40

I really loved this season, more than I expected to tbh because I'm not a huge fan of horror.
Hope everyone has watched it because I have a question. If not, SPOILER alert. When 001 kills the children in the lab, does he then go back in time as he enters the upside down to 1983, which is when Will goes missing and El, who is traumatised from what she's seen, first appears in season 1. So, a time loop? I can't really remember all the details from season 1 so have I got that wrong?

DrMadelineMaxwell · 04/06/2022 23:17

I really enjoyed it, as I have the other series. Cannot wait for the last 2 eps!

I got the Nightmare on Elm street vibe early on, and therefore laughed loudly when they revealed Englund in his role. I also, as mentioned by others upthread, found it more horror-y than just suspenseful and had to look away when they characters were killed as I did find it more graphic than previous years.

I still like the Dustin/Steve dynamic. Didn't really mind Will and co having a smaller part, but do like Jonathaon, so thought his diminished role was a shame. I wasn't sure about the Munsen character, but he really grew on me. Poor fella! Still a bit concerned about what his final outcome might be.

I found it q refreshing that it wasn't all solved by Elle and her magic powers due to her having lost them. Her raising her hand/shouting/bleeding was getting a bit of a samey/safe way to solve a lot of things.

Max's epsiode and song was very well done - very moving!
