I know I’m very late to the party and I’m sure there are other threads though I couldn’t see one. But bloody hell! It’s absolutely incredible. Heard there was a new season starting so went to the beginning to see if it was any good. I didn’t like League of Gebtleman so didn’t have high hopes. Binged the first season in a couple of evenings and can’t wait for more. Anyone else love it? Does it stay as great through s2 and beyond?

I didn’t get it! What did he find at the end?

EmmaAgain22 · 22/12/2022 23:41

Oh I can watch this now
is it grim as in gross? I can't watch gross stuff. I have seen all of them bar the art gallery one, generally I find them brilliant.

Ahh thought so but wasn’t sure. Thanks! It all
ended a bit abruptly.

I loved it. I love a spooky Christmas story. I hate jump scares which i didn't get with this. But loved the spooky build up. Ending explained here

Not gross, just ends in true festive style for Insude Number 9.

Thank you for posting that, my brain was hurting trying to work it out! 😁

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 23/12/2022 10:13

Just watched it - good little twist at the end there and not gross in the least

Whylurkwhenicanjoinin · 23/12/2022 13:11

I loved it, took a bit of thinking about at the end but I got what was happening, especially when Posy told her story. As always I think I'll have to watch it again to get the full effect. So pleased they're back although I believe they'll be taking a break after these.

JoyDivisionOvenGlovesx · 23/12/2022 15:49

Loved it. Beautifully executed.

EmmaAgain22 · 23/12/2022 16:41

Seen it now, loved it! Will need to watch again.

They are such wonderful actors and there are so many moments of wondering who....and it packs so much into 30 minutes. Steve P is my favourite though.

EmmaAgain22 · 23/12/2022 16:45

Does anyone feel a connection between this and Bent Neck Lady of Hill House?

Lottapianos · 24/12/2022 21:33

That was just great. Such tight writing. So satisfying

This explanation doesn't mention that he says that his wife died that year after buying the camping ticket, but later says it was his mother who bought the ticket and then died...

Yes, that’s a bit of a clanger. They have totally missed the lie about the mother. It’s just there to make you realise he has an ulterior motive for being in the church. I don’t agree with their reading that the warnings necessarily come from a loved one beyond the grave.

Clawdy · 25/12/2022 08:14

I noticed his lie too. I enjoyed it but found it confusing.

Saucery · 25/12/2022 08:24

He also said his late wife booked it as a gift, but then she didn’t pay for it? I thought that didn’t ring true even before the Mother lie.

notacooldad · 25/12/2022 08:35

I dont think it was a clanger at all. It was ( imo) designed to show he was there under false pretences it was a mistake it wouldn't have got past editing, I'm sure.

No, the Radio Times journalist’s clanger. They missed that he later claimed to be in the church because his mother was buried in the churchyard and it led them to a totally incorrect interpretation that the premonitions were being sent from beyond the grave by his recently deceased wife and makes the article a nonsense. There was no wife. It was a lie. The contradiction was deliberately written in by Shearsmith and Pemberton to give an early hint that he was a wrong’un.

TinselSniffer · 25/12/2022 15:24

I enjoyed it very much, it was miles better than their last Christmas episode.

What was that near the end, when the verger had a phone message for the Steve Pemberton character, about something not looking good? Or am I getting mixed up.

All they wrote in the radio times article was "The answer to this question is open to interpretation, but one reading of the story is that loved ones past and present are capable of sending these surreal warnings of danger to their relatives" They are correct that there was a time loop. They haven't totally misinterpreted the story, just given one possible explanation for the warning he was given.

TinselSniffer · 25/12/2022 17:02

Ignore my earlier post, I just watched the bit with the phone message again and it was the Reece Shearsmith character telling the verger he'd seen something strange in the church.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 25/12/2022 17:07

@Calibrachoa Read further on:

”In the case of Dr Parkway, his warning could have come from beyond the grave.

We learn early in the episode that his wife had booked the overnight stay in the church, but sadly passed away from illness before they could enjoy it together.

From the after life, she may have foreseen that her husband was on a collision course with calamity, sending him the warning in an attempt to prevent his grim fate.”

It’s a misinterpretation because they have misunderstood that there was no wife to book the stay, and the story about the wife was a lie.

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/01/2023 19:29

Slightly behind as have so much tv to watch

So just seen

I didn't get it and usually like no 9

Though I didn't expect /like the hanging

I don't like hanging scenes on tv as dh hung his self so when not expecting it , it comes as a bit of a shock

TinselSniffer · 04/01/2023 20:16

I'm sorry to hear that @Blondeshavemorefun. Flowers

Hanging is featured in so many films and tv programs and I always think to myself that many people watching will be distressed by seeing it. I haven't been affected personally but it happens to so many families, I think some kind of warning should be given before tv & films that depict it.
