I keep hearing rumours but can't see anything set in stone. Does anyone know when the new series of PB starts?

OP posts:
Chocolattay · 13/03/2022 22:50

That was horrid, poor Ruby. I don’t think Lizzie will forgive Tommy, I expect to see her leave in the next episode. I wonder if she’ll take Charles with her? They don’t seem particularly close purely from what we’ve seen on screen but I imagine she’s a mother figure to him and I’m not sure she’d just leave him with Tommy in his current state.

XelaM · 13/03/2022 22:52

I actually really like this season and I thought Tommy's chasing of Esme and the curse was very well done. Embarrassingly, in the past I have had a lot of involvement with people who have believed in such curses and black magic and that's exactly how they behave (and also the usual outcome is that nothing can be done about the actual problem).

Diana Mosley is repulsive, but I find the whole Mitford clan repulsive, so I imagine that's how she was in real life.

Chocolattay · 13/03/2022 22:53

It is uncomfortable viewing these days. It used to just be a great Sunday night drama and something to look forward to but now it is just absolutely harrowing.

It lacks the dark humour and almost cheeky character the first few series had.

foxlover47 · 13/03/2022 22:55

@XelaM I think similar , she's portrayed as the horrible person she actually was
And I can totally see why Tommy would of gone to Esme and tried to pursue any means to break/ stop the curse ... he believes in it totally

LadyTwinkle · 13/03/2022 22:56

I couldn't help but notice, that in the previous episode, when Tommy was pointedly ignoring his son while fussing over Ruby, that Charles was being played by Billy Jenkins, who was the young Prince Charles in The Crown and also in Humans on C4. I wonder if the death of Ruby is going to initiate a renewed interest in his son now that Ruby has sadly passed away. Since they've obviously cast an experienced child actor in the role.

Chocolattay · 13/03/2022 23:00

@LadyTwinkle

I noticed that and felt terrible for Charlie. Maybe true to the times that a father would make a fuss of and be protective of a daughter whereas a son would be more left to it, but it’s still sad. Especially with Charlie not having a mum. And I doubt Lizzie will have much emotional energy for him for a while.

I think it’ll go either one of 2 ways. Either Tommy is going to suddenly cling onto Charlie and he’ll play a big role in the rest of the series or as I said in another comment, Lizzie and him will leave together.

TheUsualShitshow · 13/03/2022 23:05

I was glad to see Esme back, I loved her ballsy personality back in the early days.

I'm glad to see the back of the breathy ghost of Grace scenes too: I actually think Lizzie and Tommy are a far better more balanced couple.

And - controversy alert- I don't miss Polly at all. The character had become a parody of herself I thought; if I had to watch her toss her hair or smoke a fag in slow motion one more time!

Chocolattay · 13/03/2022 23:08

I always wanted him to end up with May. Didn’t like Grace, and was gutted when she showed up pregnant because I was happy thinking he’d get with May.

I’ve really grown to like Lizzie though.

XelaM · 13/03/2022 23:26

@TheUsualShitshow I soo agree about Polly! I know it's horrible because the actress passed away, but the character got on my nerves past Season 1.

@Chocolattay I loved May too!!! Was so annoyed that Grace turned up pregnant the very day he was getting closer with May. She was lovely

Chocolattay · 13/03/2022 23:29

@XelaM

If only he’d ended up with May living a happy life tending to racehorses.

Bloody Grace, ruining it lol.

OnTheBoardwalk · 13/03/2022 23:32

My only issue is we are now halfway through this series and yes apart from Ruby, I don’t think a lot has happened

After waiting this long there are only 3 episodes left. Are they planning any more?

XelaM · 13/03/2022 23:33

Hah, Grace was AWFUL - worst PB character!! Grrr! I even prefer Diana Mosely and the crazy Russian "Duchess"/sex worker Grin

Chocolattay · 13/03/2022 23:56

@XelaM

I’m so sick of hearing her fecking breathing all of the time Grin

Krabapple · 14/03/2022 06:50

No one seems to have mentioned Ada’s role last night. I loved her - especially her insults to Diana Mitford and Moseley.
I thought it picked up last night. I hope that wasn’t it for Steven Grahams character either. I wonder how he will fit in.

LadyTwinkle · 14/03/2022 07:52

I never liked Grace, but I always thought Linda was the worse character by far. She was so badly written. I hope she doesn't come back.

Exactly this - other than Ruby dying, nothing has actually happened.

Unless they turn it around in the last 3 episodes, this series will be definitely be one too far.

LadyTwinkle · 14/03/2022 07:57

Is there some question over Charlie's parentage, because Grace went to America got married and then returned to Tommy pregnant. Is Tommy unsure if he's really Charles father?

I thought she knew Tommy was the father because her husband couldn’t have children - possibly not remembering correctly though
Boood · 14/03/2022 09:46

Nitpick- I’m sure Diana wasn’t a Lady at this point. She only got an Hon from her father as he was a baron not an earl, Bryan Guinness hadn’t inherited his title at the point they divorced, and she wasn’t married to Mosley yet. And I’m pretty sure she wasn’t bisexual- I seem to remember picking up an implication from what I’ve read about her that she was actually quite prudish, and I think she was quite unpleasant about Pamela Mitford’s late-life lesbianism.

DarkFuckeryoftheHumanHeart · 14/03/2022 09:56

I thought Lizzie and Ada performances in this episode were stunning. Lizzie telling Tommy at the end about Ruby broke my heart Sad As it is the last series it was never going to be lighthearted and jokey, it is, I presume, the downfall of Tommy. Interested to see what is happening with Arthur and Steven Graham... Arthur looks terrible, Paul Anderson must have lost a to. If weight for this series

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 14/03/2022 11:37

Oooh that business in Liverpool is going to have repercussions for the Shelbys.

Love how Ada held her own at the lunch. Loved Ada's trouser suit. I love Ada basically.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 14/03/2022 11:40

Had to do a HUGE eye roll at a) the heavy breathing voice over rushing poor Ruby into hospital, and b) the slow motion swagger through Liverpool docks. Although did laugh when Arfur snatched some poor random fellas fag out of his mouth and chucked it on the floor Grin

Missed Alfie and his light relief this week

Me too!

Thymeout · 14/03/2022 13:10

@Boood
Yes - I wondered about the 'Lady Diana Mitford', too. It's the sort of mistake an American might make, but a definite faux pas in U circles. Overall, it's a bit of a broad brush caricature, but Diana and Guinness were celebrated as the Bright Young Things when they were together, kicking up their heels and being shockingly scandalous in reaction to WW1.

Regarding the mood, there are some episodes in earlier series that I wouldn't like to watch again. Brute violence. I think the humour has always been quite dark, like the Sopranos. I suppose it's personal taste. I enjoyed Ada's put-downs. Glad that circumstances have scuppered her intention to retire.

The Guardian reviewer thought it was the best yet, but it was more of a transitional episode for me.
