I keep hearing rumours but can't see anything set in stone. Does anyone know when the new series of PB starts?

@babywalker56

Sorry you didn’t like it. For me, the politics add an extra dimension, like The Wire and Borgen. They’d gone as far as they could with battles against rival gangs and in this series I think it was inevitable that the politics would be more dominant because we’re coming up to WW2.

As a family, they were drifting apart as they used their wealth in different ways. It was never going to be a Darling Buds of May saga anyway.

I agree with you, tho’, about the middle episodes being a bit slow. I wonder how much that had to do with Helen’s death and covid problems. Can’t help wondering what Polly would have been up to if she’d lived. Don’t think she’d have let Arthur get into such a state.

@Thymeout very true. I think that’s one of the reasons why I’ve just accepted this season for how it is. With the disruption of Covid and then Helen’s unfortunate death, I’m sure they have to shuffle a few things around for it to make sense. I did enjoy the last episode but I just found the build up slightly anti climax if you get what I mean

DarkFuckeryoftheHumanHeart · 06/04/2022 06:46

I genuinely don't understand why they tucked Michael away in jail for the whole series though, if the whole climax was supposed to be him killing Tommy- why didn't they give him more to do?

Samcro · 06/04/2022 08:07

can someone tell me what mosely said to tommy in the Hof P
I went out of the room and missed that bit.

babywalker56 · 06/04/2022 08:18

@DarkFuckeryoftheHumanHeart yeah exactly! I didn’t even consider that really. He was more or less irrelevant the whole season

@Samcro Mosley wanted to invite Tommy to their wedding and he wanted to invite him in person. Tommy said he couldn’t make it because he’d be in Canada. Mosley said the other reason why he wanted to invite Tommy in person is to tell him that once him and Diana (is that even her name?!) are married, if Tommy even looks at her, he’ll have him killed. I’m sure someone will add if I’ve forgotten what else but I think that was basically it

thanks

I went back and watched the very first episode last night, to see how different it looked and felt, and was quite surprised!

It was shot so much more brightly; Tommy's face/eyes were not constantly in shadow although there were elements of it; one of the first things he did was save Danny Whizzbang's life; and Arthur was quite the revelation, as he was functional and coherent, and not the rambling shouting hulk parody character I felt he became.

It's still absolutely goregously shot, and Cillian Murphy is just stupidly young and beautiful in some shots.

Over the course of the whole piece, it's like the money and power slowly froze them all into unhappy versions of themselves, and Arthur especially became completely distorted because Tommy's takeover as boss left him as the family muscle.

Thymeout · 06/04/2022 11:31

After the last episode screened, there were 2 programmes on BBC 3, now back on TV as well as online. Will be on I-player. The second is an interview with Cillian Murphy. I've never seen him in anything else, so it was a revelation for me. Just how good an actor he is, as I was expecting him to be Tommy warmed up. He says that they were worried about his height before deciding to cast him. Suits cut with bigger shoulders etc. I think that's why we saw so much of him on horseback, shot from below. As I've said before, it was only in the Lizzie scenes that I noticed it. Often happens tho'. Charismatic Rock super stars are often on the short side. Small screen flatters small faces. Or Small Faces.

womaniswomaniswoman · 06/04/2022 12:45

Oh were there? Not very well advertised! I'll have a look.

TigerLilyTail · 06/04/2022 14:09

I agree that Cillian is an amazing actor. He's so different when you see him in interviews and comes across as a kind and gentle man. His eyes are so soulful, whereas Tommy's eyes are so dead. The transformation is just amazing.

I think the last season was very much about Tommy and his decline. I think it was amazing, but it would have been nice to see more of the other characters.

I'm excited to see the movie.

BreakfastOfWaffles · 06/04/2022 17:38

I have to admit that I have found parts of this series hard work, but the finale was great. The family picnic scene set the stage for the film with the next generation. They have in Conrad Khan and Billy Jenkins two of the best young actors in the country so it's perfect for a Charles /Duke power struggle. Duke has nothing to lose and everything to gain by taking the helm, and Charles is clearly already damaged by Tommy's awful parenting. I agree with a PP that Tommy is deeply conflicted about his life and hates that he sucks in "good" people like Lizzie and Charles, hence his inability to connect with his son. I really hope these two are the leads in the film. Tommy can have a cameo!

TottersBlankly · 06/04/2022 17:59

So no beautiful Arthur in the film, you think?

Sad
BreakfastOfWaffles · 06/04/2022 19:15

@TottersBlankly I would love to see a back in the land of the living Arthur in the film. Maybe with him and Linda back together, with Arthur having conquered his demons. I fear that might be a bit too modern though, as so many men never recovered their mental health after the war. He could also do with a better haircut for the film!
