Anyone watching yet? I'm 3 episodes in, liking it so far but starting to get slightly confused by there being so many characters.

I love James Nesbitt Blush

From looking at Twitter I see that Stay Close is the number 2 show on Netflix in the WORLD today!

Yep. It's been polarising to a degree but a new bingeable show will get an audience, especially if people watched The Stranger or Safe, they were actually ok.

Really liked it. Harlan Coben series strike a balance for me with just enough suspense/scariness, watchable characters and twists that I don't seem to guess in advance.

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

I was sure Fester would be the killer, as a bald man who was stalking Cassie and somehow protecting Ray through the murders.

I also thought Broome was a goner because he wrote 'Broome's desk' in indelible pen on his desk. I thought we'd have a sad scene at the end where people who loved him looked poignantly at the desk where he'd written it.

Also thought his biscuit jar would be significant since they kept showing it.

I had no idea it was Lorraine but it all made sense.

Plot holes and unanswered questions galore, mostly already mentioned in this thread.

Overall, enjoyable nonsense sums it up for me!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 09/01/2022 10:31

I'm now watching 'Safe'. I recall liking The Stranger some years ago.

meanderingthrough · 09/01/2022 11:32

Finished through gritted teeth and some p*ss taking. Sunk costs falacy. I can however recommend a visit to The Dream by to anyone vaguely local. It’s about a 10 minute walk, you can’t park directly outside or get inside Hmm

GlitchStitch · 09/01/2022 12:36

I enjoyed it as easy watching and bingeable, you definitely have to suspend belief though. I always like watching out for the things that don't quite translate from the US. Such as Harry the lawyer, basically on retainer for "strippers and hookers". Thats really not a British thing.

Also did I miss a scene where they found out Tawny died? As when Lorraine killed Ken she said to Broome that he had killed Harry and Tawny, how did she know?

I really like Cush Jumbo and loved her clothes in this. And Richard Armitage is always amazing. I wanted Dave to be the killer so she'd get back together with Ray.

CeleriacOfTheNight · 09/01/2022 12:36

The most far fetched event in the whole thing was that Ray found not only a working phone box, but a pristine olde fashionede red one, presumably for the benefit of the US audience.

It's fascinating isn't it, this new way of watching TV shows? Ten years Stay Close would have been made as a four-parter being shown over consecutive Monday nights on ITV, watched by 3 million people or so. Whereas on Netflix it's presumably getting billions of viewers. When would actors like Richard Armitage and Sarah Parish, who've been knocking around British TV for 20 years, get that sort of exposure?
StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 09/01/2022 12:46

They must pee their pants in excitement when they get cast in a Netflix show!

thickthighs73 · 09/01/2022 12:55

Really enjoyed it, can recommend

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 09/01/2022 13:53

I watched Jo Joyner being interviewed t'other day about the show. She said that she was simultaneously offered something that would have been 'more reliable' but opted for 'Stay Close' - clearly a no brainer in terms of potential exposure and earnings!

1000umbrellas · 09/01/2022 19:39

All the plot holes above, plus what kind of club was Vipers anyway? All the talk was it was this sleazy place populated by strippers and hookers but it looked more like a regular night club with cabaret/drag acts etc that both men and women went to.

Am I alone in loving all the posh houses/flats in the HC adaptations? I watched The Stranger a couple of years ago and literally all I remember is the gorgeous neighbourhood it was shot in. Plot? Characters? Denouement? Nah.

Watching episode 3 now and loving it! Anyone else think Sarah Parish looks sooo weird?

I did too yes, I know we all age etc and Cutting It was about 20 yrs ago, I don’t know maybe was the curly hair??? Has she had work done ???
thickthighs73 · 09/01/2022 22:20

And the gap between the teeth ? why did they add that? Odd

Ellieboolou33 · 09/01/2022 22:30

Gave up after 3 episodes, great cast but I found it boring.

Wantingtomove123 · 09/01/2022 23:06

Enjoyed it even though so many unbelievable bits in it. I’m still really confused as to how that cop and Barbie are connected. Is it his daughter? Or ex wife? Why did they show the daughter playing piano? He did say to the piano tutor that he’s getting a bonus so he was probably expecting that from Carlton’s dad. In which case the daughter can’t be Barbie.
Now watching Safe.

Barbie and Ken were hired by Carltons Father through the Policeman who was getting a backhander from the Dad (who was going to pay the tuition etc) that’s my interpretation anyway. I think they were thrown in as a red herring they were creepy as hell, they deserve their own series.
22itsallnew · 09/01/2022 23:40

What a load of codswallop. Worked out who the killer was relatively straightforwardly through lack of other candidates (once you realise who the red herring is)

Not a patch on the acting and suspense created in series like The Bridge and The Killing

Good for you (thumbs up)
Clymene · 10/01/2022 00:21

I love these series. They're utterly shit with plot holes you could drive a coach and horses through but they're entertaining. Barbie and Ken were genius and genuinely creepy

ShirleyPhallus · 10/01/2022 09:34

I am most of the way through and have guessed the killer and motive (I think)

Some of the acting is TERRIBLE. Really hammy. But enjoyable nonsense nonetheless.

My favourite line was when the photographer opened the door and said “detective and….?” And Jo Joyner says “girl detective” Grin

Yes this is confusing, I wasn’t sure if it was a flashback and the piano playing daughter is Barbie? Or just happens to have red hair too and look like her

The piano scene wasn't a flashback, 8t was a scene designed to give the chief copper a motive for being involved with 2 murderers. His daughter is a piano prodigy but that's expensive to pursue so he needs money, money he'll get from the sweaty dad of the missing lad. casting the bent cop, the piano player and Barbie all with the same hair, it's asking for confusion really.

Newgirls · 10/01/2022 10:46

I thought it was nice to see actors with red hair. Would we say the same about blondes?! Clearly we need to see more of it on tv.
