Anyone watching yet? I'm 3 episodes in, liking it so far but starting to get slightly confused by there being so many characters.

I love James Nesbitt Blush

It was total fluff but entertaining. Thought they were going for a bit of a “Utopia” feel with the eccentric hitman and woman but with none of the style, substance and humour of that show.

Newgirls · 11/01/2022 19:05

@ChoccyJules

Just finished it. My first Coben story and I have enjoyed it, despite the really rather less than safe ‘safe house’ on the beach and the antics of Barbie and Ken. I suppose without those two it would have been far more run of the mill. I thought the last scene between Lorraine and Broome was great. I always like a bit of Richard Armitage and am glad he turned out not to have done it, though he perhaps went slightly OTT with the body disposal. Overall I would watch another.
Oh yes. Did he really need to chop it up and end up so covered?!
cheapskatemum · 11/01/2022 19:12

@CounsellorTroi I thought exactly the same about Safe.

ChoccyJules · 11/01/2022 20:58

Apparently Richard Armitage is in the first of the adaptations as well so I will watch that next Wink

KatherineJaneway · 12/01/2022 00:39

No too young, and engaged to 'Ken'. They talk about their honeymoon in the Galapagos a few times.

How old was Barbie then?

DartmoorChef · 12/01/2022 01:08

I would have said barbie and Ken were late 20s. Very bizarre the dancing etc and I had to cover my eyes and ears at the torture scene, but they were quite riveting to watch.

Newgirls · 12/01/2022 08:39

Barbie and Ken reminded me of the very best Bond baddies. Great characters.

HikingforScenery · 13/01/2022 20:19

Absolutely love it!

TokyoDreaming · 13/01/2022 22:30

I enjoyed it but there were so many plot holes, I genuinely thought that I had missed an episode at one point.

Mumdiva99 · 14/01/2022 10:30

I have read several Harlon Coben novels and had to give up due to the very convenient plot points which were so unbelievable. But....I loved this. I thought the acting superb. The suspense was there till the end. Yes I had to rewind and rewatch several bits. And yes I can't work out how JN character fell in love with Lorraine in 24 hours....to the point he had researched treatment facilities.....but willed suspension of disbelief and all that. I am going to try one of the other Harlon Coban on Netflix next.

fishnchipspeas · 14/01/2022 13:00

I think JN and Lorainne had some history and we're on/off in the past but yes they suddenly fell in love.

withsprinkles · 14/01/2022 13:28

Yes, @Mumdiva99 they had history and had slept together before.

JackieWeaversZoomAc · 14/01/2022 14:32

I've watched this - it was OK.

I haven't read the book but I think the script is poor & let the great cast and cinematography down.

And the whole deep dark secret of "Mum was once a pole dancer in the most loving and nice club in the world & lives in utter shame about it even though at the time it was the best thing that could have happened to her" is abysmal. Also she was so adored, loved and cherised by all who ever knew her, while seeming to be a perfectly ordinary, fairly unremarkabale person, was a very weak plot device that the rest of the plot over relied on. I was really expecting some big reveal/twist about that character, and it never came.

They were clearly very well off but no one seemed to work - Megan never did a minutes work the whole time though she constantly used work as a cover.

It did come together a bit more at the end, but ultimately this gets an "overrated & underwhelming" from me.

I guessed the cuplrit very early on - shame they got caught really. So from that aspect it lacked suspense. I couldn't figure out where Barbie & Ken came from?

I did like the ending and how M came to be back where she started - keeping a big secret!

Mumdiva99 · 14/01/2022 16:21

@withsprinkles but that was about 17 years ago when he was investigating the previous disappearance. To be fair he had history with all the lead females except Cassie.....i'm mean I like JN as an actor....but to believe all the women were falling at his feet also took some belief. Grin

ThePinkTeapot · 15/01/2022 22:27

I enjoyed it, but it was the TV equivalent of an airport novel. The one element I found totally jarring were Barbie and Ken - it’s like they were from another programme entirely. Apparently best in the business but really shit at their job and massively conspicuous.

Inspirationpending · 15/01/2022 22:28

Just finished this
I mean there were some plot holes you could drive a truck through but really enjoyed it.
The end reveal what happened to Carlton gave me the chills

DH wanted a barbie & Ken spin off show.

Tobogganist · 16/01/2022 01:03

Oh god. There was good acting in this but WTF ?! Barbie and Ken in the outfits dancing and singing that was SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT!!!!! Grin

diddl · 16/01/2022 09:40

I don't understand why Lorraine cared about what had happened to Stewart's body.

She wrote a note from Ray-did she want Cassie to think that Ray had done it??

Obviously Cassie would run away!

Also what money had Stewart hidden?

Did Kayleigh & Bea go to Viper's in Bea's car-if so, why were they using Carlton's?

What on earth did Dave think that Kayleigh had done to need the car disposing of?

VioletCharlotte · 16/01/2022 10:13

I really enjoyed it, there were a few plot holes though. When the ginger haired detective locked Megan and Kayleigh in one of the offices, how did anyone know ether were there and how did they get out? And why didn't anyone ask who had locked them in there? Also what happened to his body after the Ken hitman throttled him?

And I didn't really get why Carlton Flynn's father had hired Barbie and Ken?

CatNameChange101 · 16/01/2022 23:40

What did they see in the picture that led them to the woods, which led them to the drag marks and bunker? There was something red in the picture from one of the subsequent years.

MaryAndHerNet · 17/01/2022 00:23

It was a sack truck.

A hidden sack truck... In the woods..
That the lone woman would lift a dead man's body into and then pull through the woods at night. It makes as much sense as 13 ostriches doing the can can in tutus. 😜

CatNameChange101 · 17/01/2022 00:35

So it was literally the cart for moving the bodies?! Just stuffed in the plants?!

MaryAndHerNet · 17/01/2022 07:55

Yep
Wriggles10 · 17/01/2022 18:48

I've just finished binge watching it, was totally ridiculous in places but still watchable.

The highlight for me was recognising the 'safe house' as it's down the road from a friends house in Thurstaston. Great excitement when I dug out pictures of us on the beach right in front of the house!

flapjackfairy · 17/01/2022 19:36

At the end Lorraine told Broome that Barbie and Ken had killed Harry and that other girl whose name escapes me. She had gone off to be a nurse and as far as I could tell her body hadn't been found and no one even knew she was missing . So how did Lorraine know? Or did I miss a bit ?
