Anyone watching yet? I'm 3 episodes in, liking it so far but starting to get slightly confused by there being so many characters.

I love James Nesbitt Blush

Carlton's sweaty dad had really gained in confidence since he played that sweet but pathetic character on Mum...

ShirleyPhallus · 10/01/2022 11:26

@Newgirls

I thought it was nice to see actors with red hair. Would we say the same about blondes?! Clearly we need to see more of it on tv.
Also I’d say that about half the actors were of BAME which was really nice to see, I saw something on twitter that said it was really nice to see a black middle class family cast in a way that didn’t portray the family as the wronguns
manchester86 · 10/01/2022 12:05

It's maybe already been said but why did Lorraine admit to Carltons murder when she didn't do it? Did she know she was covering for the young girl?

I agree. Red hair is so rare on TV that even if they'd made the car driving friend of the daughter a red head, people might still think she was the cops daughter. If Lorraine had been cast as a red head the speculation would have gone off the charts..
Newgirls · 10/01/2022 12:51

Lorraine saw the girls putting Carlton in the boot I think. It was her last act of standing up for women (I think).

DartmoorChef · 10/01/2022 13:09

I really enjoyed it. Loads of plot holes but still thought it was great.

Elasmotherium · 10/01/2022 13:51

She knew she was dying and had nothing to lose by covering for Cassie's daughter.

She also knew the man was a scumbag spiking girls drinks so it fitted with her own reasons for killing which was keeping the women at the club safe.

Boood · 10/01/2022 20:09

I enjoyed this, but I didn’t think the setting translated well to the UK- not as well as the other Harlan Coben adaptations I’ve seen on Netflix. I can fill in some filming location gaps for you though. Both the house Stuart Green lived in and Megan’s house are in Didsbury in Manchester. The former is occupied in real life by two insanely excitable Pomeranians who spend most of their time sitting behind the gates yapping at everyone who walks past.
The offices where Megan first goes to look for Harry, and I think also the police station, are at Media City in Salford Quays. And I think the rundown area where Harry’s office was looked like the bottom end of Salford, where it joins Manchester.

januarybluetown · 10/01/2022 20:19

I really enjoyed this and Richard Armitage was great in it as well as being nice looking.

I couldn't help wondering why Cassie had only moved a few miles away from the nightclub and had only just encountered her ex and Lorraine.

liveforsummer · 10/01/2022 20:20

Oh hush I thought the piano playing daughter and barbie were one in the same but reading this I see I'm wrong

Clymene · 10/01/2022 21:44

One thing that occurred to me today is that barbie stabbed Cassie in the shoulder and bit such a huge chunk out of her forearm that she spat it out.

And yet she was absolutely scar and dent free at her wedding. She must have a great plastic surgeon (possibly explains how she hadn't aged a day over 17 years)

ghillyp · 10/01/2022 21:48

@MaryAndHerNet

Yes this is confusing, I wasn’t sure if it was a flashback and the piano playing daughter is Barbie? Or just happens to have red hair too and look like her

The piano scene wasn't a flashback, 8t was a scene designed to give the chief copper a motive for being involved with 2 murderers. His daughter is a piano prodigy but that's expensive to pursue so he needs money, money he'll get from the sweaty dad of the missing lad. casting the bent cop, the piano player and Barbie all with the same hair, it's asking for confusion really.

Oh! I totally misinterpreted this and thought it was flashbacks and he was her dad!
liveforsummer · 10/01/2022 21:49

@Clymene yes and they had a lot of back shots in the wedding dress too. Could have made at least a bit of an attempt 😆

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 10/01/2022 22:14

I’m loving it, on episode 4... I love James nesbitt and Cush jumbo... although that dancing couple are really creepy... like who does that 😂

2DogsOnMySofa · 10/01/2022 22:20

@januarybluetown that's exactly what I thought. If I was trying to reinvent myself, I'd have moved to the outer Hebrides, or at the very least Birmingham, not just moved to the next village over.

But even with the few 'inaccuracies' I really enjoyed it.

Jabbawasarollingstone · 10/01/2022 22:23

Some good actors trying to work with a ridiculous and a stupid story. Gave up after episode 1.

withsprinkles · 10/01/2022 23:07

Oh hush I thought the piano playing daughter and barbie were one in the same but reading this I see I'm wrong

Lots of people seem to have made this leap. I'm surprised because they seem totally different ages to me.

My husband made the same point as a PP about no stab scars on Megan's back!

CounsellorTroi · 10/01/2022 23:55

I agree that Coben’s novels don’t translate well to a British setting. Like in Safe, there was a group of adults who had gone to the local high school, who all now lived in a nearby gated community and their children attended the same high school. That might work in small town America, but highly unlikely in British suburbia!

KatherineJaneway · 11/01/2022 06:08

I assumed Barbie was the piano playing girl's mother.

EarringsandLipstick · 11/01/2022 07:07

No too young, and engaged to 'Ken'. They talk about their honeymoon in the Galapagos a few times.

DysmalRadius · 11/01/2022 10:32

The weird scene where Ken accidentally touched Barbie's boob and she was really cross confused me - I assumed they were just 'work colleagues' from that, but then they talked about their honeymoon?

SapatSea · 11/01/2022 11:24

I laughed at how despite Harlen Corben adaptations always getting great viewer numbers that they didn't seem to have the budget for any de aging CGI or overlays/touch ups. Cassie just had a blonde wig plonked on her head to show how she looked 17 years before and Ray looked older if anything with his bad wig.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 11/01/2022 11:49

I have now watched a rather 'racy' Harlen Corben drama (Spanish) called 'The Innocent'. Another eight-episode one, again with lots of plot holes.

Leftbutcameback · 11/01/2022 13:13

Very much enjoyed it, especially the little details like “girl detective” and Barber knobbling the actress she was understudying. I had no idea it was Lorraine, but then until there was a massive pile of bodies I wasn’t convinced by the carnival serial killer story.

Some great female characters, including the killer ones, but Jo Joyner was my favourite actor. Great to see Richard Armitage in a bit of a different role for him (although he will always be John Thornton to me)

ChoccyJules · 11/01/2022 18:08

Just finished it. My first Coben story and I have enjoyed it, despite the really rather less than safe ‘safe house’ on the beach and the antics of Barbie and Ken. I suppose without those two it would have been far more run of the mill.
I thought the last scene between Lorraine and Broome was great.
I always like a bit of Richard Armitage and am glad he turned out not to have done it, though he perhaps went slightly OTT with the body disposal.
Overall I would watch another.
