Anyone watching yet? I'm 3 episodes in, liking it so far but starting to get slightly confused by there being so many characters.

I love James Nesbitt Blush

Thewiseone it's exactly the same in horror films.
Oh there is someone in my house let me stumble around in total darkness tentatively shouting out 'hello' whilst barefoot and wearing a see-through nightie. Yeah as if that would really happen. What you would do is put on every light, put footwear on and a thick dressing gown then go and get your sharpest, bigger fuck off knife before screaming get the fuck out of my house or I'm going to stab you!
Alas it's not real.

blobby10 · 03/01/2022 13:19

I’m loving this! On ep 3 where JN character is struggling with the cocky superior officer and his drive towards digitalisation and hot desking 🤣🤣also can’t believe that so many people are linked with not just Cassie but the murders too and no one has met yet 🤣🤣oh I hope Richard armitages character isn’t the killer

ChristmasPlanning · 03/01/2022 20:28

Binge watched this bd one of the best programmes I've seen for ages!

Acting was excellent. Barbule & Ken characters were terrifying!

WingingItSince1973 · 03/01/2022 20:33

Ha ha yes I agree about the implausible things mentioned. But I still loved it. Its nice to get away from real life for a few (8) hours. I'll watch it again as I binged it without DH. I loved the weird duo! I thought how on earth Cassie/Megan avoided all those people she ran away from but obviously not very far! Surely you would to other end of country or even abroad. Either way I liked it.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 03/01/2022 20:39

Just watched the first three. I’m finding it terrifying and laughable at the same time! Barbie and Ken……shudder.

Yes the main plot hole - who would change their identity just to move a few miles down the road?!

ImFree2doasiwant · 03/01/2022 21:24

I saw this thread before watching. Cane back to say ...WTF is going on with the dancing duo??

MaryAndHerNet · 03/01/2022 22:24

WTF is going on with the dancing duo??

Imagine them as warped American Door To Door religious fundamentalists and not just weirdly dressed overacting kids.

I am intrigued as to why some people seem to like them and their they're scary etc. They're just laughable to me tbh

Allaboutyou222 · 03/01/2022 22:26

I thought it was rubbish. Watched 2. Utter nonsense.

RubyJam · 03/01/2022 22:39

I’m 3 episodes in and think I’m going to give up

The biggest thing that is annoying me is the costume designer for this show should be shot !
All the cast in bright colours like bloody Willy wonka - every single scene the main characters have elements of bold bright colour , even the sets are coloured this way

I just don’t get it

It’s supposed to be a crime drama and it’s like panto colours

It’s wacky but it’s not good enough to be cool
It’s just weird
It’s like the bold colours are just so off in this script and setting

GrinI am way too invested and irritated by the set design and costume design sorry

The actual story is ok but some of the acting is extremely hammy from big names too

Yeah I think I’m definitely finished after episode three

Iamtheweedonkey · 03/01/2022 22:40

I was disappointed with this, watched it all, called the killer by ep 3. So many questions left unanswered, just really, very odd. I don't get the dancing twins, the dci and his pianist daughter, why a police station would have no CCTV, or come to that the car park outside vipers.

mumontherun14 · 03/01/2022 23:32

Loved it , it was like a guilty pleasure.

What kind of job does Cassi/Meghan have where you can swan around all day & no one misses you?
JN & partner were the worst/slowest cops ever. How did it take them 17 yrs to realise all those men were missing on the same night?

Xx

Krabapple · 03/01/2022 23:47

We loved it, you do have to suspend belief and most ignore the plot holes. Loved Lorraine’s apartment and also Ken and Barbie

Maves · 03/01/2022 23:56

Liking it BUT beanie and Ken kinda ruin it for me. Really liked Eddie izzards charecter. Also I think the time frame should have been shorter 17 years and they all look the fucking same!

Maves · 03/01/2022 23:59

Barbie even it's jus daft the dancing etc

wizzler · 04/01/2022 00:17

Really enjoyed it.had to suspend belief a few times.. for example that Broome falls completely in love including big commitments within a few days, when Ken and barbie dance before getting Tawny ( poor Tawny) out of the car and especially at that lovely safe house right on the beach.

warning: spoilers

Can anyone clear up some confusions for me about this please? Google isn’t helping,

  • relationship between Goldberg & Barbie - are they father/daughter as suggested?
  • what was the relevance in the piano scene where the teacher says they owe him £700?
  • secret bunker with dead bodies - what was it, why was it there, how did Lorraine know it was there, why did nobody else know about it?

Came on this thread expecting everyone to be in fits of laughter at how awful the show is. Can’t get over how many like it.

Absolute shite. Tried to watch it and made it through two episodes before losing the will to endure another minute of it.

Acting was terrible, storyline full of holes, and the whole thing left me feeling somewhere between angry and bemused that this made it past the pilot episode.

Bluntness100 · 04/01/2022 07:59

I’m also surprised how many like it. I’m working my way through it, with two more to go, but it’s woodenly acted and I think the script likely does the book no credit. Harlan is an excellent author but this is very poorly done.

  1. No Barbie wasn't Goldberg's daughter. I did wonder that because of the red hair, but that was just a red herring.
  1. The £700 piano teacher debt was to explain why Goldberg was crooked and helping the criminal father of the missing man for money.
  1. This was not explained, although Lorraine did say that she owned Vipers at one point so maybe we are supposed to think she knew about the underground cavern having bought the land adjacent to it?

Yes it was silly but it was entertaining.

borntobequiet · 04/01/2022 08:08

What I find odd is that the books are always set in America but the books are set in England. Somehow they don’t quite translate.

Yes, there’s a weird dissonance in ambiance, lifestyles and behaviours that just aren’t quite British. I think I watched one of the other HC adaptations right through, but I didn’t make the end of the first episode of this.

cherrytree63 · 04/01/2022 08:13

I really enjoyed it, maybe I'm easily pleased!
I've preferred the ones set kn England, I've started The Woods, The Innocent and Gone for Good but not made it past episode 3.

bevelino · 04/01/2022 12:45

I thought that the violence against Tawny was unnecessary and quite horrific.

sunshineclouds24 · 04/01/2022 15:02

I enjoyed it but I think I preferred The Stranger and Safe. I'm sure more book adaptations will be made giving parts to well known actors with locations using large detached houses!

Polmuggle · 04/01/2022 16:04

It took the police 17 years to work out that all these men had disappeared on the night of the carnival.

TBF they were never tasked with investigating the ones in the middle. The main two cops investigated the original one, then got handed the new one. It was only because they were sure that they were connected, that the went and dug up reports of everyone else who had gone missing around the same dates in the years in between.
