Wonderful

Why is there a shortage of men. Is it something to do with the Napoleonic wars (orms weak grasp of this period in history shows itself)? Or is it just this particular place that frighten eligible men off?

Marina · 26/11/2007 20:34

I think it is implied in the book that something befalls any married chap who comes to live in Cranford because its ladies are Amazons
The Napoleonic Wars, and the longer lifespan of women, (once they have survived the lottery of childbearing) are the probable reasons IMO OrmIrian

Marina · 26/11/2007 20:35

It was so not the same piece of lace though!

MerryAnnSinglemas · 27/11/2007 10:52

Piffle · 27/11/2007 10:58

Will we get to meet Septimus?
Dying dying dying to know who would play him!

JenT · 27/11/2007 15:19

Fabulous! one of the best things I have watched on telly for ages... very very funny.. Dh sat next to me saying - what are you laughing at... why is that funny?

Jennster · 27/11/2007 16:01

I used to be JennT JenT.

JenT · 27/11/2007 16:42

Oooh Jennster have I done the wrong thing by choosing this name? I haven't been on here long I could find something else if you would prefer?

MerryAnnSinglemas · 27/11/2007 16:59

Marina - I just knew you'd have liked The Crow Road !!

Jennster · 27/11/2007 19:33

God no JenT it's a great name

MerryAnnSinglemas · 02/12/2007 22:25

oh poor Miss Matty...

PeachesMcLeanEatsSprouts · 02/12/2007 22:27

Why are there no married couples in Cranford?

Kathyis6incheshigh · 02/12/2007 22:30

I'm having trouble empathising with all the 'I loved him but I needed to stay at home and look after my father/sister/10000s of younger brothers and sisters' stuff.

PeachesMcLeanEatsSprouts · 02/12/2007 22:36

I'm guessing that's part of it. All the women are trapped in some way and I'm guessing the outside world, whether it's the railway or the valentine cards, or god forbid, Manchester will all come together to change Cranford for ever.

Heathcliffscathy · 02/12/2007 22:43

dh and i, having not read mrs gaskill KNEW mr holbrook would get ill before he returned. i was bemoaning the predictability and then my (beloved) dh turned to me and said, sophable, remember this is the beginning of the plot twist.

i love him

MarsLady · 02/12/2007 23:32

I don't think I can sob anymore. I just watched 2 episodes back to back.

First Deborah, then Walter and now Mr Holbrooke!
