jennester and bossy britches....just checked, if you have 'catch up tv' Virgin its being repeated. HOORAY!!! Looking forward to my tv tonight.

MerryAnnSinglemas · 19/11/2007 12:24

I am so happy this is on - we loved it here,it made me laugh and laugh !

MerryAnnSinglemas · 19/11/2007 12:26

coal shovel thing made me tearful too !

Threadworm · 19/11/2007 12:27

I loved it too. And I was pleasantly surprised that DH enjoyed it.

Can anyone remember how true it is to the book? Some of the dialogue seemed not-very-Gaskelly. Like 'Cranford is a town on the go' or some such.

Jennster · 19/11/2007 13:59

bum, no catch up tv, in fact no freeview either at the mo.

Lilymaid · 19/11/2007 14:13

Enjoyed it but rather annoyed that it was not in the least true to its original setting. It is set near Manchester (Knutsford) and the village it was filmed in was in the south and not remotely like Cheshire.

Overrun · 19/11/2007 14:16

I really enjoyed it, I have now read the book, but a long time ago. Its slowly coming back, and I remember the line " She has lost her bloom". Which really struck me on first reading it

Tinker · 19/11/2007 14:28

The large house where Francesa Annis lives - which National Trust house is that? Looked a bit like Lyme Park to me. Have just been to Knutsford... Deborah is obviously a good egg isn't she? Loved this.

MerryAnnSinglemas · 19/11/2007 15:43

The interiors were Syon House - I know because I used to work there as a student, selling tickets in that big marble hall. The village was Laycock so the outside of the house might be Laycock Abbey

MerryAnnSinglemas · 19/11/2007 15:43

I think Miss Deborah is my favourite so far !

kylester · 19/11/2007 15:47

Loved it too. Hubby watching rugby on the other channel so I had it all to myself!!

JackieNo · 19/11/2007 16:14

According to IMDB, Ladyd Ludlow's house is West Wycombe Park. Beautiful.

MrsTweedy · 19/11/2007 17:05

And once more Philip Glenister is phwoar-ay in a stern but decent way.
Thougt there was going to be something between Jessie and the dishy Greg Wise until he said she'd lost her bloom.

LIZS · 19/11/2007 17:16

It is compelling and yet very little actually happens ! I loved the book which I read about 20 years ago at University, must unearth it again.

bossybritches · 19/11/2007 17:24

Thanks bookend but like jennster no mod cons in the TV department!!

Never mind will watch next week & try & catch up! Might re-read the book to remind me of the characters again.

helpwanted · 20/11/2007 18:34

The first part of Cranford will repeated on Sunday on BBC 1 at 5.50pm, then the second part at 9.00pm, result.

choosyfloosy · 20/11/2007 18:39

oh dear, had to switch over at point of amputation [wuss emoticon]

will try reading the book, preferably without illustrations

does anyone know, isn't it an amalgamation of more than one novel? Which contains the bit with Laurentia the milliner?

LIZS · 20/11/2007 19:33

There was no maputation lol ! These are 3 stories rolled together but not sure where Cranford finishes and the others begin.

bossybritches · 21/11/2007 06:48

Great thanks HelpWanted!

I know they usually do that with the BBC dramas so I'll be able to catch up.

Jennster · 21/11/2007 09:08
