I must admit to a sniffle when Holbrook died, despite seeing it coming before he even went to Paris!

Piffle · 03/12/2007 11:47

found some trivia out too

the stepmother who turned up last week is the real life daughter of Judi Dench, the dark haired sister who keeps having palpitations is the real life daughter of Annette Crosbie and sounded just like her and Captain Brown is the real life husband of Imelda Staunton.

"Miss Deborah" aka Eileen Atkins, is the co-inventor of "Upstairs Downstairs", along with Jean Marsh. She was intended to play 'Sarah' to Jean M's 'Rose' but could not, so Pauline Collins got her big chance!

Threadworm · 03/12/2007 11:49

oh oh oh! I kept saying how much she sounded like annette crosbie. I didn't know they were related. Isn't it amazing how similar they sound.

MerryAnnSinglemas · 03/12/2007 11:49

Wow, didn't know that was Annette Crosbie's daughter ! did know about Finty Williams though

Heathcliffscathy · 03/12/2007 15:49

i know merryann....he's so right though.

CremolaFirCone · 03/12/2007 17:44

"men know everything about everything except when it will happen and what is to be done.my father was a man so i l know it is true"(Miss Pole aka Imelda staunton)
I laughed until i cried last night and also at the bit about being over zealous with the yuletide trimmings.

Wept buckets for miss Matty when michael gambon croked.we were all sitting on the sofa shouting 'don't go to paris!'...

Anchovy · 03/12/2007 17:52

I've been really busy at work and have sky plussed this and am really looking forward to watching this over Christmas

hifi · 03/12/2007 18:01

im looking for a house there.

MarsSelectionBoxLady · 03/12/2007 18:14

The... "my father was a man" line did for me too. I love this programme. So much laughing. They way they all scuttle about. And then all the tears.

No not as bad as Pursuit of Happyness, but at times it feels close.

MerryAnnSinglemas · 03/12/2007 18:27

hope you'll love it too anchovy !

Kathyis6incheshigh · 03/12/2007 21:27

There'd better be some happier storylines coming up

Marina · 03/12/2007 22:01

am still trying to work out if the early transvestite was in the original novel or not...
Cranford is such a great example of, IMO, the world's best actors showcased by the world's best broadcaster. It's so easy when seeing some of the bilge on our screens at the mo to forget to be justifiably proud of our technical and artistic excellence.
Even the fact that so many of the cast are related to each other says something for Britain's heritage of actor training.
Mind you, I thought Annette Crosbie only had greyhounds, not actual progeny
Judi Dench's face when Miss Galindo, another lonely spinster, commented on widow's bonnets, was heartbreaking

MerryAnnSinglemas · 03/12/2007 22:42

so that's not Annette Crosbie's daughter ?

jezzemx · 03/12/2007 22:56

it's wonderful!!!!!!
Piffle "BIG THANK YOU"
It has been driving me nuts !!!!! wondering whether she was anette crosbie's daughter. I saw her in the series, smoking room(I think that's what it was called) and it bugs me every time I see her in something.
Well not anymore!!!

Threadworm · 04/12/2007 09:57

I think the 'early transvestite' is in the book too. He's just playing a practical joke though, rather than expressing any 'needs'. Though it is rather odd.

Threadworm · 04/12/2007 09:57

Judy Dench is completely flipping brilliant in this.

CremolaFirCone · 09/12/2007 11:47

can't wait for tonight's episode.

MerryAnnSinglemas · 09/12/2007 12:34

me too !

3littlefrogs · 09/12/2007 13:00

Judy Dench is such a fantastic actress. Her performance last week - just with her facial expressions - had me almost in tears.

MarsyChristmas · 09/12/2007 22:07

So many broken hearts. 1 naive doctor. And poor poor Miss Maddie

Kathyate6mincepies · 09/12/2007 22:09

I did not enjoy this episode so much as I was alternating between being very, very sad, and cringing.

I want more of the lace-eating cat and the cow in pyjamas.

MarsyChristmas · 09/12/2007 22:17

Ah but the cringing was so funny! It was funny that the dear young doctor was completely oblivious to the fact that he was considered "sex on legs" by all the women in the town.

Actually what saddened me was the way that poor Harry was punished for learning to read. Even as he spoke to her ladyship I was shouting "no don't tell her don't tell her"

And how sad that that beautiful countryside was being ripped apart even though it was for "progress"

florenceuk · 09/12/2007 22:26

missed the last minutes of this just when Mary announced she was marrying Jem - what happened next?

MarsyChristmas · 09/12/2007 22:44

That was when it kicked off with the doctor.

Sickly woman's sister told the Rector that her sister was soon to be engaged (that very day) to the young doctor. Rector went rigid with shock, Miss Rose almost passed out as Miss Pole had assured her that the doctor had as good as proposed to her. Sophie looked heartbroken and was marched off by her father whilst the young doctor sat broken hearted clutching ale! Sob!!!!!!!!!

florenceuk · 10/12/2007 09:24

thanks mars - i will try and catch the end of the repeat next week as it sounds essential!
