Season 2 was only ok. The funniest episode in season 1 was where Julia’s in-laws come to stay.

Yes, the way she screeched out of that station car park when she dropped them off to go home! So funny. They were no help at all were they? 😂

Love Motherland, hope Diane Morgan (Liz) is in series 3 though, she's the best thing in it. I have to ask though, does anyone else/am I supposed to really dislike Julia? Because I really do, more so even than Amanda who is clearly supposed to be obnoxious.

Yes, I don't think she's supposed to be a sympathetic character. She's every bit as obnoxious as Amanda.

I don't dislike Joanna Lumley at all but I did sigh when I saw a brief trailer and it was her again. Surely there must be other women actors who can speak in a cut class accent and play these kind of parts? It always feels like the same people all the time getting the gigs! I'm sure she'll be fab and funny but it still annoys me.

@the80sweregreat I totally agree with you. I like JL but she seems to be in everything these days. It's hard enough for older actresses to find work anyway without one actress being the "go to" posh-older-lady.

On another note I think Lucy Punch (Amanda) is the best thing in this show. Relentlessly annoying but also someone we can sympathise with. She actually is quite famous in the US and lives in Hollywood, I've seen her in a few things and she's incredible. Bad Teacher is a particular favourite

The Christmas special one she looked amazing. Although she is annoying, she also has a vulnerable side to her ; having to leave her beautiful house and her husband divorcing her.
She is clearly gutted but trying to put a positive spin on it.!

The bit in the last series where the new woman said to Amanda something like you are fabulous, you don’t need to pretend to be something you’re not (I don’t think it was quite that but that was the sentiment) was so sad, she just understood her desperation perfectly.

I think so! So glad this is starting. I was just thinking about this, after seeing Anna maxwell Martin in line of duty! She is such a great actor. I think my favourite line is when poor Kevin actually asks her for a favour for once, and she says yes of course, I mean not tomorrow but the next time your mother in law has a nasty fall i can definitely pick up your kids! She is so funny.

I'm so excited about series 3! I've been watching the previous 2 series in preparation and if anything it makes me laugh even more second time around as there is so much going on you sometimes miss it. I'm not sure I have a favourite as they are all so good in their different ways but Liz's deadpan comments always make me laugh and Kevin is such a good physical comedian (remember the human cloakroom?) he is really funny.

Confession time ( I miss Simon Mayo ) I read a thread about Motherland series one on mumsnet and someone mentioned Basil Fawlty and then the connection about how Julia behaves and reacts and it's stuck with me how true they were! So it's a bit third hand my musings there about her.
I don't want to not like her, but some of her actions are a bit strange ( such as when she was in the coffee shop working and she got the guy running around after her!) she is a ' cheeky fucker ' sometimes.
I Hope stay at home dad features again and the single mum. She is funny.

I didn’t love the new woman character, think she’s a bit ott trying to be funny. I literally don’t know anyone like that irl. The rest of the cast is so spot on though I love them all.

Excellent news! It’ll be nice to see series 2 again as well, I was sad it wasn’t on Netflix. It’s going to confuse me seeing scatty stressed Julia after watching Carmichael on LOD 🤣

Yes! There’s something about the comic timing - that opening scene of E.1 where she waits and waits at the temporary traffic light, decides to pull out and the other car suddenly does too .

I watched series one recently in Netflix I really enjoyed it but haven't been able to find series 2 . I can't believe Julia and Carmichael are the same person. I mean obviously they are same person but they are just 2 completely different characters, what a great actress. I actually had to Google to see if it was definitely the same person.

I wonder if Julia will start to kick her car !

It's grown on me but it's a bit ott for me, having not brought my kids up in London (another major city) people just aren't like that. Love Diane Morgan though, she's got genius comic timing
