Enjoying this thread. I hated Motherland initially. I expected to love it, like Catastrophe because it's a Sharon Horgan gig.
I found every character vile & unfunny. I hated Julia with a passion. Thought it was over-wrought & unbelievable ...
BUT I re-watched on Netflix recently & totally changed my mind.
I realised all the characters are meant to be monstrous in a way, Julia most of all & Liz least so. There's some genuinely moving moments with her, like the time she buys a coat that Amanda is selling, and gets loads of attention, free flowers from the guy selling them in the street, and her horrible ex makes a move. Then it all ends badly as he makes it clear it's not her, it's the coat & she flings it aside. She just looks so sad. But happily, as she's walking past the flower seller in her normal coat, he gives her free flowers again. It's all very subtle & acted brilliantly.
Julia is a nightmare. But I now appreciate her nightmarish ness.
S2 is on Netflix tomorrow I'm recording S3 on BBC as in Ireland so won't be able to watch back.
Can't wait now!
