Thanks Fizzy, I thought I'd be roundly castigated for this opinion, but there was just something that didn't sit quite right with me.

Laggartha · 13/04/2021 11:44

I wonder if they are just a bit self conscious because of the filming? It sometimes felt a little bit like The Office. "Be good? I'm always good".

delilabell · 13/04/2021 11:48

I feel if it was a man he would have got a far heavier sentence. This episode has really upset me.

RevolvingPivot · 13/04/2021 11:48

Even if you were innocent would you be smiling if your partner was in intensive care?

These last couple of episodes have felt a bit 'half a story'-ish - usually the editors are much better at disguising the fact that they're not revealing the entire facts of a case (fair enough, legal reasons, etc). But it makes an ending like that feel a bit ... wtf? I guess both were focused more on human aspect of the cases (the fear that drove Richardas to live in the bushes for 5 years, the mental control of domestic violence) but there could have been a bit more context added at the end - someone explaining WHY the murder/manslaughter case was dismissed, and how the sentence ended up being for ABH instead.

It doesn't send out a great message out to anyone plucking up the courage to report domestic violence, if a victim can apparently be beaten to death and the assailant gets 16 months.

Crispina · 13/04/2021 11:58

Started watching it now. I recognise the name Sherry Naidoo, so maybe saw it in the news at the time

Laggartha · 13/04/2021 12:26

I've finally finished the episode, a truly shocking outcome.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/04/2021 12:35

@FizzyPink

I thought that too in parts. I was also quite surprised at how open they were with Cindy about the fact that he had called the police on her. You’d think they might be mindful of the fact that they’ve just landed him in it if he does go back to her which he’ll no doubt be punished for.
Yes. I was surprised when they said which hospital he was in, and that he was in ITU. I get the point they were trying to get across to her, about how ill he was. But revealing his location was a bit odd.
vjg13 · 13/04/2021 12:40

It was a really hard one to watch, it was so sad when he said he would like to live in a Heaven. The prison sentence she received was unbelievably short.

JemimaTab · 13/04/2021 12:50

I couldn’t understand the verdict at all. And if she wasn’t convicted for murder or manslaughter, why was the charge downgraded from GBH to ABH? I thought ABH tended to mean more minor injuries, where this was very far from that.
Baffled. I guess a bit of context was left out.

whatsthestory123 · 13/04/2021 13:00

i think that a 60min view ist o short and maybe a 90 min could cover more and more in depth

Just finished it. So sad Sad

MyHouse2011 · 13/04/2021 16:07

I completely agree.

MyHouse2011 · 13/04/2021 16:09

@Laggartha

I thought the police officers' behaviour was a little striking - the high fives, the "smash it!", the screaming... I dunno, but I thought they'd be a little more serious and professional.

I noticed it as well but I put it down to nerves with being on TV but despite that I’d still want her on my side if I ever needed police help.

ShowerOfShite · 13/04/2021 17:01

I live locally and used to see them both. Lots of heavy drinking and obviously chaotic living but he was always pleasant and polite.
It's a dreadful outcome, she should have been charged with murder.

Crispina · 13/04/2021 17:16

Poor man. Awful

That smirk chilled me. As did her lack of reaction in the interview.

Not as chilling as the lack of justice though.

Sometimes alcohol turns people into nasty bastards. I don’t think that one needs alcohol to reach that level. She is one cold bastard.

Poor Paul.

Wingedharpy · 14/04/2021 03:40

Can't do links, sorry, but there's an article in Bedfordshire Live which adds more context to this sad case.
Having read it, it makes more sense.

SakuraEdenSwan1 · 14/04/2021 04:20

16 bloody months?😳

Shocking it really is.

I thought it might give a bit more background on Sherry. I'm not sure what her upbringing was like but is there really any excuse? Apparently she was a victim of DV from an ex partner. To me that's worse as she can understand the pain and worry. Totally different but I've heard victims of child sexual assault also go onto abuse. Is their proof that domestic victims are also abusers?
Crispina · 14/04/2021 10:29

The judge probably thinks the same as us but I suppose they have to follow the law rather than their opinion. It does seem weird the difference between the sentence Justice got and Sherry though.

RevolvingPivot · 14/04/2021 10:31

@Crispina maybe they though Justice intended to kill. Although justice didn't have a criminal record and was on drugs that night.
Sherry had a history of violence. I think they system is confusing.

ElizabethTudor · 14/04/2021 10:53

From both the BBC and Bedfordshire articles
When tried for murder the judge concluded that there was insufficient evidence for a jury to infer Naidoo had intended to kill him or cause serious harm
How can a battering so bad that the poor man ends up with two bleeds on the brain, not be intended to cause serious harm?
I actually gasped when it announced he’d had a heart attack and was unlikely to survive, and again when she got just 16 months.
As a PP said, why ABH not GBH.
The sentencing situation in this country is all to shit.
Poor Paul, and I really feel for his family.
