It deeply upset me this episode. The poor guy looked so utterly broken lay in his hospital bed, still trying to defend her out of loyalty and fear but in his heart just wanted to go back to Cornwall. Or heaven. Him dying just as he was getting help seemed an absolutely tragic twist and the photos of him at the end showing how happy and healthy he looked before meeting Sherry absolutely finished me. I don’t understand why the charges dropped from GBH, but I do know that justice certainly wasn’t served that day.

Crispina · 15/04/2021 01:40

I worry for whoever Sherry targets next, in place of him, when she gets out. She's obviously able to identify vulnerable people

Hels20 · 15/04/2021 02:31

@Crispina she had been with him for 10 years. A hugely toxic relationship. Maybe she will finally get the help she needs. Without drink, I expect none of this would have happened.

LizzieSiddal · 15/04/2021 22:28

This episode was so upsetting.
This was the second time she’d been put in prison for attacking Paul. Surely that in itself should have meant she got a longer term.

LemonSwan · 15/04/2021 22:32

God, here to say also what a fucking awful case. Poor bloke

Less than a year in prison for murder.

Fucking outrageous! So pissed off with that I am actually in a bad mood

RoseRedRoseBlue · 15/04/2021 22:51

Lemon I am the same. Watched it last night and still stewing over it.

LemonSwan · 15/04/2021 22:59

@RoseRedRoseBlue
I just dont understand it. I personally know people who have done way longer sentences than that for stupid drug offences at uni or at festivals where quantities were deemed above personal (even though they were personal) and yet they wouldn't hurt a goldfish. Its insanity

RoseRedRoseBlue · 15/04/2021 23:07

I guess she had a great barrister and some strong mitigation

Whatwaswrongwiththatusername · 16/04/2021 03:41

@Toddlerteaplease

Surely that should have been manslaughter. Not ABH. The police woman was so desperate to help him. Very sad.
It's even more stunning that I'm sure she was actually originally charged with GBH with intent, wasn't she? So to not only not get found guilty of manslaughter, she wasn't even found guilty of GBH intent!! How did that happen? ABH was the same verdict she had last time, when she went to prison for the last offence. She'd only been out a week or so and then this happened! Honestly, it beggars belief that any judge could possibly be so lenient - not only bringing up her 'terrible' life etc, and using it as an excuse, but undoubtedly they'd probably not have been able to use her precious conviction as evidence of this one, but it's ok to take her past into account if it's to help her case. Honestly baffling.
Juliettbravo · 16/04/2021 13:11

When you consider that Justice from a couple of weeks ago had an equally abusive childhood, did show remorse and didn't kill anyone had no lenience shown. Doesn't make sense Sad

RoseRedRoseBlue · 16/04/2021 19:26

That’s because there is a big gender bias in sentencing

I'm still shocked at his sentence. Know he could have killed someone and their is no guarantee he wouldn't do it again after taking whatever drug he took. I hope he's having counselling inside.
FizzyPink · 16/04/2021 20:47

I thought that about Justice too, I really hope he gets some help while in prison although I know how woefully underfunded it is.
I used to work for a children’s charity and it’s heartbreaking how many children like him get stuck in a cycle of drugs and crime because it’s all they’ve ever known.

Isn't it true that women get disproportionately longer prison sentences than men?

Perhaps it's more to do with racism than gender bias.

knittingaddict · 17/04/2021 09:01

I don't excuse Justice in any way though. It annoys me when previous neglect and abuse is used as a defence. The vast majority of people who have been abused do not go on to be violent or abusive.

Justice was a very attractive man with the kind of features that bring out our caring, protective instincts (puppy dog eyes and a sweet smile). If he had looked like the nasty piece of work who raped those two young girls we wouldn't feel nearly as sad. Justice was a drug dealer and was probably involved in some kind of turf war. I'm sure that was said on the programme.
He was no innocent.

I've found this series fascinating, but this weeks was a tough watch. It seems even domestic violence against men isn't taken seriously either. Very depressing.

RevolvingPivot · 17/04/2021 10:21

I really hope the programme hasn't put men off reporting abuse.

I know she went to prison but then once out she was even worse than before.

Juliettbravo · 17/04/2021 11:03

@knittingaddict I agree and I did make that comment about him on a different thread (the one about gang crime in Manchester).

RoseRedRoseBlue · 17/04/2021 11:13

@knittingaddict certainly not in my experience. I can’t tell you the amount of multi hander trials I have seen where all the men go down....and the women walk away. Interestingly, I have noticed a geographical variation in sentencing as well.

knittingaddict · 17/04/2021 13:52

If you google "do women get harsher sentences" there are loads of reports about it, although it may be different in different countries. There seems to be a bias against women doing "unladylike" things like getting drunk or having a sex life. I definitely think such bias exists, although I'm no expert.

cushioncovers · 21/04/2021 14:38

Just watched the Paul and Sherry episode. How fucking depressing. 16 months!! Poor bloke.
