Starting a thread in readiness for 9pm.

It's heartbreaking to think of how of these "suicides" were accidents.

LadyCatStark · 19/03/2021 11:21

@RevolvingPivot

Do we think he really was in fear for his life? Do you think he knew what it would do to her if the police found out (not as in kill herself but ruin her career). I think he regretted it but who knows what was going through his head. Maybe he really was scared. He looked a lot bigger than her though. Not saying it's right.
We don’t get to decide whether he really was in fear of his life or not. Talk about victim blaming!
Bibidy · 19/03/2021 11:25

The documentary made me so sad.

What I took away from it was how troubled and unstable she actually was behind the scenes, and her family seemed to know that her whole life. Her mum and sister spoke as if her suicide was almost inevitable to them.

It seemed like she was on a path to self-destruct from day one, and she was in a vicious circle of not being able to live without the fame and admiration but on the flip side not being able to handle the other side of it - most notably the press intrusion and social media trolling.

It was shocking and sad to see the things that were shown in the press and on twitter, but really my main takeaway was that her mental state and fragility meant she was absolutely not suitable or stable enough to be in the roles and career she had.

Bibidy · 19/03/2021 11:28

@RevolvingPivot

Does anyone see any positivity coming out of the programme?

I think it's going to bring up more hate towards her.

I think the documentary coveted 3 separate issues:

The family grieving.
Mental Health.
Domestic Violence

I felt sorry for her friends (her family seemed to understand ) but they didn't seem to see how she partly brought the police involvement on herself.

I hadn't followed the story before in the news and watching the show actually made me feel more negatively towards her which I don't think was the point.

I don't think it will bring up more hate towards her - for me, it was more of an eye-opener as to how mentally unstable she really was throughout her whole life.

I had assumed until now that the criticism and social media in the press played the largest part in her demise, whereas now I feel like her own mental health struggles were 95% of the cause. Seems like she was walking a tightrope for a really long time, and that has never really been talked about so deeply before.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 19/03/2021 11:34

This was the programme her family needed, in the same way as eulogies don't paint the true picture of a person but make the deceased loved ones feel better.

She was a violent abuser, and surrounded herself with enablers, as these people often do.

It should never have come to her taking her own life, but it seems that it was inevitable with her mental health and refusal of any help.

I feel sorry for her family, and its sad that she felt that was her only escape.

I agree with those saying the programme was a very sanitised version of reality.

PandemicAtTheDisco · 19/03/2021 12:22

I would have prefered less of a tribute. I don't think it is right to show such a one-sided biased production. They left out too much.

I'm uncomfortable about how the DA is minimised/ignored.

What duty of care does society have towards those with MH issues that commit crimes?

Why was the SM so extreme against her? What should be done about it?

RickiTarr · 19/03/2021 13:21

Speaking to my ex this lunchtime, who lost a close relative to suicide, he is absolutely livid at the way first the Meghan and then the Caroline programmes this fortnight, and the commentary around them, have cast a certain light and suspicion on the subject of suicide. He is terribly upset, which I hadn’t anticipated, not having been closely affected by a suicide myself.

I’ve told him I will prewatch the Roman Kemp doc on iPlayer and let him know if it’s safe for him to watch as he really is hoping it is a more representative depiction of the issue but doesn’t feel up to watching it “blind”.

I only watched the CF documentary late last night because of this thread, and had mixed feelings, but his take has made me reconsider it further.

Sparklingbrook · 19/03/2021 13:23

I thought the Roman Kemp documentary was excellent.

KarensChoppyBob · 19/03/2021 13:24

Haven't seen that. Will watch.

GabsAlot · 19/03/2021 18:37

apologies i didnt know she had told them to leave after an arguument

i knew an ambulance had been called the night before-if someone refuses help what else can you do apart from having them sectioned which obviously couldnt be done by her friends at the time

Dustyhedge · 19/03/2021 22:36

I had mixed feelings about the show but took away a sense that someone should have had a duty of care to her a few years back re the backlash around xfactor. There was a lot that was unsaid at that point that made me wonder if there had been more unsuccessful attempts on her life during that period. It is her family that unfortunately now have to live with the what-ifs.

MercyBooth · 19/03/2021 23:11

The culture at ITV seems bloody toxic. All that Britain Get Talking bollocks. Bloody hypocrites.

lollipoprainbow · 20/03/2021 07:21

@butterpuffed I thought there were a few people at the memorial bench there was certainly another female and a man there as well as the mum and twin sister?

lollipoprainbow · 20/03/2021 07:22

I felt sad for her mum, she reminded me of Wendy Richards!

RoseRedRoseBlue · 20/03/2021 15:13

Thing is, ITV and the other channels continue to make all these exploitative type programmes (inc Love Island, which CF profited from massively) and people carry on lapping them up whilst simultaneously saying how awful they are.......

You know I watched the documentary and I hadn’t seen a single thing she ever did. I knew I couldn’t remember seeing her in anything but I sort of expected to recognise some ancient footage on the documentary. I didn’t.

I knew her from the gossip columns, so it’s not like I’m Ms high culture or anything. I’ll watch stuff like Gogglebox & First Dates on Channel 4, or all sorts of Hayu nonsense or KUWTK or whatever if I’m in the mood. However, there’s obviously a whole category of ITV output that’s too drossy even for me. I already knew I felt like that about ITV daytime but I was sort of shocked to realise it about ITV prime time. I thought about it and I only ever visit ITV player for Morse, Marple, Poirot repeats and very occasionally for something very well reviewed (drama or documentary). I asked a couple of friends and they said the same so there must be a real race to the bottom going on at ITV.

RoseRedRoseBlue · 20/03/2021 22:07

@RickiTarr funnily enough, I watched it this afternoon and it was very, very selectively edited.

RickiTarr · 20/03/2021 22:10

What did they edit out?

RoseRedRoseBlue · 20/03/2021 22:43

Sorry, edit was the wrong term. I meant to say the included material was very selectively picked, and the entire Harry Styles affair was glossed over. That certainly deserved more scrutiny.

Namechange1991x · 20/03/2021 22:47

Did she have borderline personality disorder'?
I have it and saw similarities in her self harm, intense emotions she felt unable to cope with?

Namechange1991x · 20/03/2021 22:50

@Bibidy I agree

Sidewalksue · 20/03/2021 22:56

I didn’t follow her very closely and I’m watching the documentary. Do they ever suggest that being arrested and facing criminal charges was a factor in her suicide. I imagine if she had been found guilty it’s doubtful she would have worked again in the industry?

Namechange1991x · 20/03/2021 22:56

Oops just read the whole thread. It's upset me that people have made harsh assumptions about those with BPD. I don't hurt other people, just myself.

RoseRedRoseBlue · 20/03/2021 23:03

@Sidewalksue I am sure she would have worked again, look at the furore at Ant McPartlin’s drink drive conviction....never ever referred to now and he is back in prime time TV.

Sidewalksue · 20/03/2021 23:14

@RoseRedRoseBlue I always imagined it would be one rule for men and one for woman.
I assume Ant and Dec produce a lot of their content from their own company so have more power.
