Spoiler-free thread to discuss the upcoming Marvel series on Disney+.

I wasn't excited about this but the trailer has made me excited. Unlike WandaVision, the trailer and promo art make it fairly obvious (I think) who one of the Big Bads will be. Also looks like it will be quite funny, carrying on the energy that Sam and Bucky had in Captain America Civil War.

He seems to have a lot less trouble catching up with modern life than Steve ever did, though!

What new shield? Cap gave it to Sam.
But where did (original) Cap get it from? His was broken in the fight with Thanos. This one he bought back when he was an old man after his time jump life with Peggy. Did he visit another alternate timeline to get it? I think it is subtly different to the original as well.

Sharon clearly seems to be the Power Broker but why is she sending French Dude into bed with the Flag Smashers?

Especially as he wants to kill Falcon. Sharon could actually be worse than I expected.

I just came on to say - Sam’s eyelashes. Sigh.

@LemonViolet

Loved the arm quote! Highlighting the boundary between Bucky and Winter Soldier. I liked the boat stuff, and the handling of the issue of race/racism, and think the depth we went into with Sam’s family was important for that. Bucky admitting that he and Steve (as white men) hadn’t considered what it meant - they probably took a “colourblind” approach, but if you can’t see race, you can’t see racism. I really wanted to hear what Lemar’s sister had to say to Walker - she clearly had opinions from the look in her face but stayed schtum during that scene! Definitely annoyed they killed him off.

Very much enjoyed the training montage, and the post-credits scene. And I finally believed Sam and Bucky’s chemistry in this episode, with them acknowledging that they’re not really buddies, that Steve is their connection and he’s not here any more (where IS Old Man Cap btw?!? And also where did the new shield come from?!?) and really they’re just a couple of guys. It felt forced before, because now they admit it was.

One final thought why isn’t Sam talking about all of this with Rhodey?

My eldest son was saying the same thing about Rhodey.
I didn't think about the shield and that the original one was broken.

I do feel sorry for Walker, it shows how they build these people up to basically do there dirty work and leave them high and dry when there not needed anymore.

They touched on white privilege so well, I hope it does start to impact on people watching these shows to understand racism.

Surely Old Man Cap had an undamaged shield as in his timeline Thanos never happened. Or he half-inched one while returning the infinity stones.

Report
bunglebee · 18/04/2021 11:41

Cap could simply have gone back to right before the shield got damaged and half-inched it to give it back to Sam.

I think Sam and Rhodey were just never close. They're both Black and ex military but that doesn't make them buddies. Rhodey was tight with Tony and Sam with Steve. They were on opposite sides in Civil War, only came back together for the Battle of Wakanda and then Sam got dusted. Not a lot of space to get close. also the showrunners didn't want to pay Don Cheadle It makes more sense to me for Bucky and Sam to orbit round each other for the sheer sake of how they both felt about Steve and how much they put on the line for that. Sam went to the Raft for Bucky! Even though he was doing it for Steve.

LemonViolet · 18/04/2021 11:53

I just don’t think Steve would take the same shield from another timeline...when he knows the consequences that that could have, given that he was on his time jaunt in order to replace infinity stones in the first place. I think he must have had another one made somewhere/somewhen.

It’s just that Rhodey was there counselling Sam at the start of this series, so why when Sam finds out about Isaiah and is reconsidering taking up the shield, it would just have made a lot of sense to me if he’d spoken to Rhodey again.

bunglebee · 18/04/2021 12:03

Rhodey and Sam were at the same military function honouring Steve though. It made sense for both of them to be there and they had a chat because they were, but they've never been at the level of seeking each other out.

Ah yeah good point bungle

Wakandan wings + alt-shield, I think he should become American Falcon Grin

ILoveYou3000 · 18/04/2021 13:30

I think it'll be a Black Pantheresque suit possibly in red, white and blue to match the shield, but not flag like.

Will wings mean no more somersaults and all his training with the shield going to waste?

@captainpantbeard whoever she is apparently she is meant to be in Black Widow..and that would've come out before this so probably made more sense..if true or not though guess find out eventually. Mysterious

Black Widow still not being out is killing me Grin I really enjoyed this week's episode. I think I now ♥️ Sebastian Stan. He was so funny flirting with Sarah. Someone said above Bucky adapted to modern life better than Steve, but Bucky was always more of an extrovert and a flirt.

If Sharon is the Power Broker (and we are definitely supposed to think so) then she is truly evil.

Is Zemo really going to quietly head off to The Raft? He has a lot of unfinished business surely. Its nice that he and Bucky worked out their issues- I think?

John Walker really has lost the plot completely. I saw a meme on Instagram contrasting how he always introduced himself as "John Walker, Captain America" but Steve Rogers just called himself Steve Rogers. Great character detail.

Looking forward to the finale. This show has been a bit up and down, and the Flag Smashers haven't really done it for me as villains (I don't find Karli believable at all) but Batroc is engaging and Sam properly and publicly accepting the shield is going to be great. Can't wait to see the contents of the Wakanda Box Grin

Totally agree about the Flag Smashers. I just...don't care? And so the series has really faltered for me after a strong opening because I'm not especially interested in their mission and the buddy relationship between the title characters hasn't really developed. It started to get dull for me when they introduced Zemo, who I don't care about either.

Have to wait for Loki now.

Can't believe how long the gap is until Loki!!

Yes, was a very good finish. Loved Sam's suit, absolutely perfect. Sharon nicely set up for going forward too. Still don't like John Walker.

Liked Sam's suit.

Hated his speech. Sorry, but CRINGE.

Loved Bucky fooling with Sam's nephews and letting them hang off his arm.

I felt Bucky was a bit underutilised though. And still not really caring about the Flag-Smashers. That said, "Captain America and the Winter Soldier", and Sam with his arm around Bucky, hit me in the good place.

I'm not nearly as shocked by Sharon being the PB as I am about what she did to that dude in the truck with the mercury vapour. That was dark.

Anyone watched the Loki trailer? Am I seeing things or is that Nat he's sat with (backs for camera) about 12 seconds before the end?

SPOILERS AHEAD

I'm quite disappointed with the finale, and there were some really good episodes in this series.

The writing was SO clunky. What happened to "show don't tell"? Even the post credit scene. We can fill in the gaps ourselves guys! We don't need Sharon to get on the phone and say, "DON'T WORRY I'M STILL THE POWER BROKER".

Sam's speech went on FAR too long, it was embarrassing. Laying it on with a bloody trowel, after all the complexity that went before.

Bucky's big redemption, which I was actually quite anxious about, in anticipation of a good cathartic cry, was just "soz, I killed your son. Bye." And now apparently he's cured of 80 years of trauma and will live happily ever after on a boat? Fuck that - he was far more interesting in the earlier episodes when he seemed on the brink of madness all the time. There was an unbearable pathos to Sebastian Stan's performance that made me cry in every other episode. This one was just a big cheese fest.

Why was Val in the government building with John? Isn't he persona non grata? It smacked of budget / covid / actor availability restrictions and was very distracting.

It really seemed like they were setting up Torres to be the Falcon last episode. Sam told him to keep the wings. But he was nowhere to be seen.

The best bit was when Zemo's butler blew up the Flag Smashers. The rest of it was a mess. And why so short??

YesItsAPeacock has more or less reviewed it for me. So much wasted potential. Most disappointing Marvel Studios offering since Antman And The Wasp.
