Anyone watched this mini series what are yourr thoughts on Adele? What did you make on the twist at the end?

OP posts:
Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 22/02/2021 17:22

I thought
it was about 2 episodes too long
the 2 lead actresses were doing their best with absolutely shockingly poor material to work with. If I were them I would have been half way through going, "really I am better than this"
Tom Bateman is a shit actor and had a horribly unsympathetic character
There needed to be a bit more woo going on generally to pull off the ending
The ending (from adele entering louise's body) to then end was like an episode of Round the Twist or some other kids drama

Watched it all, like

SmellsLikeAHamsterCage · 22/02/2021 17:41

I was a bit confused. Who taught who the the finger counting technique in the mental health facility? Did Adele teach it to Rob or did Rob reach it to Adele? Because it sounded like Rob was explaining it to her, but then in another Adele said she was 'travelling' the night her parents died, so that was before she'd even met Rob.

needadvice54321 · 22/02/2021 19:08

@Notashandyta

I loved it!

I actually want to watch it now we know what was actually happening in the short and who adele really was

Yes me too!
Teardrop2021 · 22/02/2021 19:16

Adele teaches rob the finger moves. Its actually david who gives Adele a hippy book he finds in a book store to help her with her night terrors as a child this is where she learns to control them about learns about travelling and astral projection. Shes later teaches rob about opening door ways and to astral project his soul to travel. She never swapped bodies until that faithful night. Rob had planned to steal her life for the get go. Sad thing is if David never gave her that book rob would never had been given that opportunity the most he would have done would have stolen from her instead he was given a gateway to steal her whole life and she paid the price.

OP posts:
workshy44 · 22/02/2021 19:25

Was it Robs plan from the start ? I thought it was just when he met David and realized he wanted her life, that prior to that he really did like her
Thing is she was so kind she probably would have given him money although the time he asked what it was like to love or be love (as he hadn't been either) probably was a clue

Teardrop2021 · 22/02/2021 19:45

workshy44 Once he knew he could swap bodies by astral projection and he met David and fell for him he didn't think Adele deserved the money the house or him, his thoughts and feelings
are detailed further in the books but I suppose he was envious of her life in the book he knows them for years in the mini series its just a day so it is less believable. Adele was kind and generous and was never unkind or unwelcoming she would have done anything for him. She even called him her best friend and told she loved him before the switch she completely trusted him and she was genuine about her affection of him which made the betrayal so much more worse. She even said he needed to learn to trust people more and that people weren't always going to turn their back on him which was ironic because that's what he did to her. I think she would have utilmately helped him off the drugs but she didn't try to over push him on the subject either nor did she want to join in on experimenting either I think she loved him like a brother she never had.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 22/02/2021 20:16

I didn't really get why Adele's soul would have been OD'd on the heroin with the astral swap. Surely the bodies would have tolerated (or not) the drugs, in which case she wouldn't have died? Or did Rob purposefully inject himself with a sufficient dose to kill himself/Adele's soul?

Teardrop2021 · 22/02/2021 20:44

NewModelArmyMayhem18 prior to the souls transferring rob had a dose of heroin when Adele when into her body i would imagine she would not be use to the mind altering feeling the drug would have and how it affects the body hence why she struggle to sit up. Rob as Adele gave her the fatal dose to finish Adele off killing his body and Adele with it.

I’ve not RTFT to avoid spoilers but has is been mentioned that Adele is played by Bono’s daughter! Shock

starsinthegutter · 22/02/2021 21:18

Loved the ending, didn't see it coming at all. Loved the flash back scenes. The rest of it was a bit meh. Agree with above poster who said the 2 leads carried it and were wonderful, plus the actor who plays Rob. But the David character was just awful, apart from being easy on the eye, what was all the fuss about?! He treated Adele/rob & Louise so badly.

Some of it was so implausible... was literally shouting at the telly CALL 999, DON'T GO ROUND THERE! Astral projection isn't on the list of things you should do in a fire emergency!

alloverthecarpetagain · 23/02/2021 08:20

I just finished watching this last night and it's had me going back over the whole story looking for clues about the ending and making it fit together. He was ruthless at the mental institution because to get his heroin he said he'd 'blown' one of the staff, so I thought at that point he might be quite dangerous to Adele. That then fits with the photo he took, as he is staring at David in close up, not Adele when he is sitting at the table after they've gone to bed. So he instantly falls in love with David and wants to steal Adele's life. At that point David is totally different as well, really light hearted and charming. The significance of the photo on his desk (I think?) is that it's the last proper photo of Adele and in some sense he knows that. When they have sex, it's never right and he can't bring himself to do it face to face and Rob/Adele doesn't like that either. I don't think I can watch the whole thing again but I'm tempted!

alloverthecarpetagain · 23/02/2021 08:26

@starsinthegutter 'Some of it was so implausible... was literally shouting at the telly CALL 999, DON'T GO ROUND THERE! Astral projection isn't on the list of things you should do in a fire emergency!'

That part of the ending was the part I couldn't go along with either - Louise has tried to get in the house, can't do it but emergency services are on their way, so how did she think it would help to float up the stairs to look at the person she is trying to save? That made no sense to me as Louise was scared of Adele at that point I thought, and she understood the dangers, but also how did she go into that sleep state on the doorstep of the burning house? I can see it's a key part of the plot that she does so, but it was so infuriating to watch and Louise was usually halfway sensible and normal.

CanofCant · 23/02/2021 12:05

Just finished it, really enjoyed it! I guessed the twist too but I always try to, I like solving the puzzles.

When Adele and Rob first astral project together, his spirit is blue and hers a pinky purple. Up until then, everytime we saw Adele project or the flashbacks showed she was clinging above David and Louise, her spirit was blue. Also, the way Rob's sister described him didn't ring true at first. We had seen him as this good friend to Adele, bit of an underdog and all thought he was the victim as his body was down the well. When you notice the spirit colours, remember that he was the one with the drug addiction and add that to his sister's description of him being 'twisted and nasty', it makes sense.

I thought it was great misdirection though and I agree with PP about poor Adele being remembered in the wrong way.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 23/02/2021 13:29

You might have thought David would have noticed a complete personality change in Adele though?

DemiBourbon · 23/02/2021 18:31

@Notashandyta I really want to go back and watch it again too, looking for clues! One thing I did realise at the end was that ‘Adele’ was very eager to look at David’s new office and then made sure she went to Louise’s flat as she could only project to places she’d actually been to.

Dentistlakes · 23/02/2021 18:35

I watched this at the weekend and it totally freaked me out! Has anyone read the book or any others by the same author. Apparently she’s written some youth fiction as well but under a different name I think.

As for the series, the worst bit for me was the very end when the son was in the car and couldn’t make out why his mother was so different. I felt so sorry for him 🙁

Frequentflier · 23/02/2021 18:43

I have read the book. Rob/ Louise plans to kill Adam in the book.. " Children are so accident prone...". Shock Apparently there is a Season 2 so maybe David will get wise to Rob

muckypaws · 23/02/2021 19:40

There's a Season 2!!!

Gwenhwyfar · 23/02/2021 19:41

"Or did Rob purposefully inject himself with a sufficient dose to kill himself/Adele's soul?"

Yes, he killed her so he could take on her life.

Dentistlakes · 23/02/2021 20:30

Season 2! Excellent!

Missushbb · 24/02/2021 15:05

@Teardrop2021

I think i might need to get the book to read, I would love to get a better insight into the characters. I think the metaphors behind the story is fascinating and its rare to get into a story like that which really gets you thinking afterwards.
I've been reading the book, I'm enjoying it!
JustDanceAddict · 24/02/2021 16:24

Very clever noticing the colours of the ‘souls’ - I’m impressed. By that point I was just omg wtaf.
Yes, Bono’s daughter, I’m old 😆

theliverpoolone · 24/02/2021 19:46

@Dentistlakes that was the bit that really haunted me when I read the book too. Watching this knowing what was coming for poor Adam was heartbreaking. He was a good little actor.

Querywhether · 24/02/2021 22:01

I watched this pretty quickly so I guess I was gripped, but I found the ending a bit of a let down because it was such a change from the first 4 episodes which were standard domestic noir (and quite slow). I’m ok with woo stuff in fiction but it has to be carefully seeded. This just came out of nowhere over half way through the series. I couldn’t take it seriously and didn’t find it creepy, just silly. I can imagine the book would be better though as you get to see more of people’s interior lives.

JimmyJabs · 25/02/2021 09:21

The "counting your fingers" thing is an established way of trying to induce lucid dreaming - it's called doing a reality check. No idea if it's effective or not, but I was interested in the theory around it and I found a whole bunch of "dream explorers" on the internet. I wonder what they think of the show?
