Anyone watched this mini series what are yourr thoughts on Adele? What did you make on the twist at the end?

@StyledOnLordBath

I’ve watched the whole thing but reading this thread makes me think I have completely misunderstood the entire point... can someone explain?
Not seen the book, but this is the story in the TV programme. Impossible perfect couple arrive in a new place. Wife has obvious mental health problems, but is extremely beautiful and sophisticated. Very posh house that seems very cold and even has a bit of evil to it. Obvious problems in the marriage, potentially caused by her mental health and references to 'that can't happen again'.

Man kisses woman in pub who ends up being his secretary and starts an affair.

Wife finds out because she can make her soul travel so engineers a friendship with the woman, keeping both secret.

In the end we find out that as both Rob and Adele could 'travel' they swapped places and Rob killed Adele so he could live on in her body and she would be dead in his body down the well. He then has to try to keep David close to him so when he realises he's losing David to secretary in yellow dress, decides to swap bodies with her. He's already trained her to 'travel' via the notebook so starts a fire in the house, secretary (can't remember her name!) 'travels' to take Adele's place so she can save her from the fire. Adele (who is really Rob) kills secretary with heroin and taken on her body. She then marries David, but is still actually evil Rob. More heartache in store for David still unwittingly married to the same psychopath.

How did you see the story?

@Gwenhwyfar Thank you! I just completely missed the soul travelling aspect Blush

Remember those transparent bat things? To begin with it was just people 'travelling' in their sleep, a bit like lucid dreaming, but they were really travelling. Then at the end we saw that Adele and Rob had agreed to swap, temporarily presumably, but that went very wrong.
It made me think a lot about jealousy. However jealous we might be of someone, not many of us would choose to steal their body and life even if we could!

Frequentflier · 21/02/2021 16:12

I read the book and thought it was the most ridiculous thing I had ever read, but it didn't stop me watching the series to see if they made it any better. They didn't:) There was just no backstory for the supernatural woo; it just came out of nowhere.

Frequentflier · 21/02/2021 16:13

David must be really thick to not figure out that he has been married to Rob for ten years.

MaliceOrgan · 21/02/2021 16:57

I thought this was all just so silly (and so badly acted). Didn't stop me sticking to the end though.

They always have impossibly amazing houses (and offices) in these things too.

Teardrop2021 · 21/02/2021 20:13

MaliceOrgan the story is based on a book which is based around metaphors. Rob wants what Adele has the money, the house, david. She has everything he never had and he does everything inorder had to obtain it even betray an honest friend, who had no ill will towards him and had the best interest at heart towards him When everyone else most likely turned there back on him. Obviously there's the mystical elemental to the story. Its about him holding onto what he has stolen and then trying to kept holding that by jumping into Louise body and keeping up with the act I think it was cleverly done.

Well, I've watched the whole lot today in 2 sittings. I enjoyed it. I guessed the ending twist though.

Yeah, cos if your husband/wife was weird you'd obviously realise their body had been taken over by somebody else...

Wow? You guessed Adele was really Rob? That was a huge shock for me even though they'd introduced 'travelling' already.

I thought it was great and well acted. Which/whose acting did you think was bad. Houses and offices...mmm, as I said David and Adele's house was smart but also had something a bit evil about it. I did wonder how a single mother who only works part time could afford as nice a flat as she had, even if it was supposed to be in a 'bad' area, but then I thought maybe money from the ex?
FiveNightsAtMummys · 21/02/2021 21:19

I loved it!! It was a great twist at the end I kept thinking about it for a while afterwards. Just need something to replace it now!

Teardrop2021 · 21/02/2021 21:55

I think i might need to get the book to read, I would love to get a better insight into the characters. I think the metaphors behind the story is fascinating and its rare to get into a story like that which really gets you thinking afterwards.

Well, Adam twigged that something was wrong after only ten minutes... granted he was a lot smarter than David. I should think David would think something was off when sophisticated heiress Adele was replaced by Glasgow street kid Rob, but maybe he didn't know Adele very well...

Adele's constant counting of her fingers was a bit of a giveaway that she was Rob, who is shown doing that quite a lot.

I thought the wardrobe choices were interesting in the series; Louise's sunny earth colours in contrast to Adele's all white ensembles.

Dalamalama · 22/02/2021 06:16

I've read the book and quite enjoyed it. Started washing the TV programme but turned it off as I was bored, it's just too slow.

winetomorrow · 22/02/2021 06:45

I'm so confused as to why David was giving Adele so many drugs when as far as I could tell he just thought Rob had overdosed by accident. And if Adele was Rob and a junkie why he wouldn't take the drugs. Or are we supposed to surmise that David knows that it's Rob and is keeping him sedated? So confused!!

I also though this too.

But if Rob jumped into Adeles body did he maybe lose his craving for drugs? He only seeks them out after David tells Louise he loves her when he knows he's lost David.

I didn't think it was great to be honest. A lot of holes and the characters were very underdeveloped.
I did see the twist coming though once the travelling was explained.
I felt very sorry for Adele though. She was such a lovely person and too trusting. I think Eve played the character well...

workshy44 · 22/02/2021 10:35

I did enjoy it although did see the twist coming. I thought the acting was great, especially Eve and the guy who played Rob. What gave it away to me was the sister saying Rob was a nasty piece of work.. he wasn't shown as that previously.
Felt v sorry for poor Adele, so trusting.

Teardrop2021 · 22/02/2021 10:51

I guess David became Rob new addiction and he turned back to herion when he was losing him to Louise. Crazy how Rob could look in the mirror at Adele and feel no remorse to be able at look at the person he murdered everyday for 10 years and happily live her life. Very sinister indeed he was pure evil.

OP posts:
Hugsgalore · 22/02/2021 11:41

Yes Robs character was very underdeveloped. I also think that as he was going through withdrawal in rehab with Adele that she should have seen some of his nasty side come through? Or was she just too nice a person to not see it on someone else?

Gwenhwyfar · 22/02/2021 16:37

"Adele's constant counting of her fingers was a bit of a giveaway that she was Rob, who is shown doing that quite a lot."

I think I'd be more likely to assume someone picked up a habit from a good friend (that does happen) than soul swapping! That wouldn't be anybody's first guess would it!

Gwenhwyfar · 22/02/2021 16:39

"And if Adele was Rob and a junkie why he wouldn't take the drugs."

I think he preferred heroin to anti-psychotics.
He didn't take the anti-psychotics because he presumably preferred being psychotic.

"Or are we supposed to surmise that David knows that it's Rob and is keeping him sedated? So confused!!"

No, I don't think so. He knew 'Adele' was very troubled and dangerous.

Notashandyta · 22/02/2021 17:15

I loved it!

I actually want to watch it now we know what was actually happening in the short and who adele really was

Notashandyta · 22/02/2021 17:16
