I saw a trailer for this the other evening but DC were running around and being loud so I missed most of it. Does anyone know when it’s starting please? I don’t want to miss it as it’s brilliant!

That was my preferred theory too, Ineedaduvetday - I've been racking my brains trying to recall a convenient fountain pen somewhere about his person. Obviously the unfolding story is making this belief more difficult to sustain.

Why did I feel that Fiona, under questioning, was lying? It all seemed wrung out of her in passionate relief. But her tale was all remarkably convenient for her. And she was so ready to throw Ram under the bus.

What might the opening credits clip of a newspaper saying something like "Trouble in Pakistan" mean?

FawnDrench · 23/03/2021 18:51

Liz's bride-to-be seems to have vanished into thin air - haven't seen her for weeks.

I still think Clive might have something to do with it, but suspect Dean the most out of the flustered four.

FawnDrench · 23/03/2021 18:52

@PursuingProxemicExactitude - I think it's a reference to cricket.

fizbosshoes · 23/03/2021 19:19

I also thought she was very ready to put the blame on Ram (which I cant imagine was the rehearsed or agreed "the truth" that they all mentioned in earlier episodes)
I think she had reached tipping point though, especially after the outpouring of confession to those poor children!!

Someone in the know please clarify the pension thing for me. Shes paid in for over twenty years how can she “lose it” why are the three months so important? Surely she will still get the lump sum and monthly pension at 55 maybe abit less but does it really make such abig difference?

Sadly if she is dead shes probably worth alot more money with her death in duty insurance 😢

CherryValanc · 23/03/2021 22:10

I've just caught up. Am very much 😮 right now.

ImAncient · 23/03/2021 22:16

@MoonCatcher

Might be over stretching here but could Ram or Liz possibly be... H? Grin
Not read all the thread yet but

Genius. Pure Genius.

Take a bow. 👏👏👏👏👏

As a pensions professional this is driving me crackers. There is no way that three months would make anything more than a small difference. I assume they needed a reason for her to come back for a short time and worked on the basis that so few people understand pensions that most wouldn’t question it!
EachandEveryone · 23/03/2021 22:51

Well Im a nurse and can go at 55 Im assuming the police are the same although she is probably able to go even younger if she went in at 18! She couldve come back for afew weeks and gone off sick again even. Three months is nothing 😃

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 23/03/2021 23:38

It's a final salary scheme for police same as NHS isn't it? (Or it used to be for Cassie's generation) Therefore you have to get a minimum number of qualifying years to get the full amount and it does make a big difference.

I don't know the exact details but I do know that older police officers of my aquaintance have found it very important to get the right number of years. I knew a man who was quite ill whose colleagues carried him substantially through his last few months so he could get his full pension for him and later his wife so in my experience it is a real thing.

SirVixofVixHall · 23/03/2021 23:48

I watched last night’s episode all over again this evening, I am still no closer to guessing, but I like the pp’s theory that Walsh was put in the boot still living and someone finished him off.
I am veering between Fiona and Dean, then moving on to Liz....I hope it isn’t Dean. I think Fiona is the most likely culprit.

Jumanji89 · 24/03/2021 05:08

I think it was Dean. Maybe Walsh mixed in the same circles as his family and recognised him and having already changed his name to distance himself and enter the police he worried about the implications and killed him. His brothers helped cut the body up and get rid of evidence and blackmail him from time to time to perform drugs runs?

Hels20 · 24/03/2021 05:48

So from the helpful link above - it looks like Cassie wasn’t dead at the scene. I wonder if Cassie dies and then they bring in someone new / a bit like Spooks! This is such an excellent series - would be a shame not to continue, even without the wonderful Nicola Walker (and Spooks survived 2x series without her).

On a separate note - did anyone see that Happy Valley is scheduled for release in Autumn 2022...

KatherineJaneway · 24/03/2021 06:21

@Puffinhead

Thank you for the link.

She's alive but it sounds serious. You don't see the front of Ram's car but you do see the front of Fiona's.

ImAncient · 24/03/2021 06:38

So many loose ends. What I find fascinating is how one thing out of your control just irrevocably changes your like.

PursuingProxemicExactitude · 24/03/2021 07:14
  • And the question of whether, from that irrevocable moment, your life would be more changed if you confront the situation honestly or try to escape it by lying (even to yourself).

Because this event is 30 years ago ... If whoever murdered Walsh had confessed at the time - what would their life be, now?

Imagine, if it was Fiona - she might have gone to prison but it's likely that the subsequent traffic accident and the death of the child would never have happened. Covering up that second event has drained every second of pleasure from her life for decades.

It really is fascinating!

SingToTheSky · 24/03/2021 07:18

I really like the idea of Walsh having known Dean’s real identity and that being a threat.

Ulysses · 24/03/2021 07:19

To me the victim was a Bad Man so my sympathies towards the possible perpetrators, which is why I'm leaning towards his brother Clive lurking in the background having a bigger part to play in the death.

I did go back and watch the previous 4 episodes and can confirm all of the perps were showing using fountain pens so possibly the weapon was Fogerty's.

It really is building up to an exciting finale. Nicola Walker is such a talent I wonder if a commitment to another series of this would get in the way of other projects. It's a really good premise and the other investigators deserve a chance to shine too so I'd be happy if it continued without her.

PursuingProxemicExactitude · 24/03/2021 07:30

And yes - Jumanji89's idea of Walsh recognising Dean is definitely an intriguing possibility!

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 24/03/2021 07:41

Since Cassie will obviously be incapacitated I guess it will be down to Sunny to solve it which is rather a good thing.

I think on reflection that it was only Liz who personally hated Cassie enough to try to kill her. Her interview was a bit of a cat fight.

CherryValanc · 24/03/2021 07:45

Sunny being in charge would be interesting.

I can't help thinking that at some point Sunny will comment on racism too. There's been so much about Ram and "alleged racism" and "race card" I just feel Sunny will proitn out his experiences.

ImAncient · 24/03/2021 07:58

PursuingProxemicExactitude yes sliding doors moment. If Fiona was to be believed Ram was performing cpr so didn’t mean for him to die initially.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 24/03/2021 08:18
