I saw a trailer for this the other evening but DC were running around and being loud so I missed most of it. Does anyone know when it’s starting please? I don’t want to miss it as it’s brilliant!

OMG. Shock

And I don't appreciate all the speculation that Cassie has died - thank you very much. Sad I really couldn't bear that. She'll be invalided out of the police, and her dad will change his mind about who he leaves his money to.

I only realised today that Fiona is played by the actor who was Annie in Life on Mars! I knew I recognised her eyes - but otherwise she looks completely different. But her husband/partner's face as Fiona was revealing all to the children. Grin

Liz ... She is damn scary.

Not happy about the pen. I need Matthew Walsh's brother to be the murderer. Or Liz. Or Fiona. Not Dean, who's suffered enough.

And Not Ram.

Fantastic episode!

@NellePorter

Who is the actress playing Monty, the old landlady of the pub? I can't remember what she's been in before!
I looked atvthe credits and i think its Elizabeth Counsell. According to wiki, she is well known from Broad Strokes?
SirVixofVixHall · 23/03/2021 00:14

Crikey that was some ending !
Please don’t let her die, I couldn’t bear it.

Prolific pen use from all suspects. We have seen 3 out of the four suspects clearly using fountain pens

Episode 1: Dean on his mothers day card and Fiona during a counselling session with a young woman.

Episode 2: Liz was writing in a notebook when her mum called her but nib was unclear. Ram was using a pen with a lid but couldn't see the nib when his boss came into his office. Fiona signing a contract for the loan.

Episode 3: Ram using a pen when in his office when Sunny arrived at his police station and reception called his office, again nib was unclear.

Episode 4: Ian Henderson the police trainer was questioned in the snooker club when he was describing Liz it cut to a scene of her sitting at a desk crossing out a line of a document with a fountain pen.

So Dean, Fiona and Liz defiantly have fountain pens. Ram could have one but unclear. If the fountain pens were a passing out gift within the group the fifth person who would have also had one is Rob Foggarty who is dead.

I think Ram is too obvious a suspect even though Fiona's statement seems to implicate him. Given the fact Ram had already had an altercation with the victim Walsh and came off worse would he be brave enough to fight with him on his own again?

According to Fiona Dean was the only one who was very calm that night and walked after Ram and Rob. He could have stumbled across Walsh before the others and done it. They knew him as nice quiet Dean, If Ram and Rob came across what he had done they would most likely believe it was an accident if he told them and it would explain why Ram was giving Walsh CPR when Fiona found them. In his conversation with his wife he said said how much he hated his family and their values and the person they nearly made him become, how it had been a long hard 30 years and how he begged her to please not let him go back there.

Also the pens sound like the type of gift that Liz would purchase as an academic so she could easily replace hers if she used her first one to kill Walsh. Fiona was a heavy drinker so her timings might be off. It may only have been a few minutes before her and Liz left the car and Fiona even admitted they split up to find the others. Liz could have found him first and snapped - she has shown when pushed she can be threatening. Then left the allotment for Ram to find him.

Ram sounds as if he was the main person to cover it up because of his previous fight with Walsh so he was in self preservation mode, that doesn't necessarily make him the killer. I do wonder why his father won't talk to him though.

Sorry for the essay

NurseButtercup · 23/03/2021 01:24

I think it's either Dean or Liz. Dean has form because of his family history, and the way it was described that he walked to go and look for them.

It could be Liz because she said in an earlier scene to her mother, that she'll make her quiet with a pen.

I'm glad we have to wait until next week.

YellowPurple · 23/03/2021 01:26

We had saved them all up to watch in one go and watch them and thought tonights was the last one. Not happy to learn we now have to wait a week!

PursuingProxemicExactitude · 23/03/2021 06:29

Excellent work, SunburstsOrMarbleHalls!

Poor Cassie ...

drspouse · 23/03/2021 06:47

I am not sure if Fiona started drinking at Hendon or after the incident though? She says before but that could be to try and convince the police she has no memory?

NellePorter · 23/03/2021 06:50

Ah, Brush Strokes is where I know her from, I used to love that! Thanks @minou123

My money's on Dean Wink

DipSwimSwoosh · 23/03/2021 06:57

Yes great work, Sunbursts!

BruceAndNosh · 23/03/2021 07:27

Thank you for the pen summary!

Poor Ram, when his father wouldn't even look at him.

Fiona telling her kids about her past, but rambling so much she didn't get to the point before the police came and she casually mentioned "the body", her partner's face!

BruceAndNosh · 23/03/2021 07:28

Don't let Cassie be dead. She was much like her old self this episode

SchadenfreudePersonified · 23/03/2021 07:40

I don't believe Cassie would have given Dean's address - not unless she was hoping to get sacked for misconduct so she could leave, but that would be her pension out of the window anyway, wouldn't it?

I really am not constitutionally designed for this once-a-week stuff. Nature intended me to binge-watch. My nerves are rotten. ROTTEN!

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 23/03/2021 07:43

Oh. My. Goodness! Was not ready for that!
My money is on the pen being Liz or Dean. Do we know if the pen was definitely cause of death or could it have been post mortem?

MoonCatcher · 23/03/2021 07:51

Maybe the victim did stumble and while Ram was giving CPR Liz or Fiona put the pen in to finish him off, because they thought a dead body would be easier to deal with than a live witness.

MoonCatcher · 23/03/2021 07:54

I don't know if the scene with Fiona and her children was meant to be funny, but it was Confused

mrsfeatherbottom · 23/03/2021 07:57

Surely it would take a massive amount of force to shove a pen into someone's head?

SingToTheSky · 23/03/2021 08:05

@BruceAndNosh

Thank goodness its Monday.

After understanding 10%of the jargon in last night's Line of Duty, it will be a relief to have people talking using words rather than acronyms!

Ha! So true! I feel a bit thick watching LOD as I don’t understand half of what they say and they all talk so quickly. I’m sure the jargon increases each series - it’s practically a parody of itself now 😂 still love it, but not as much as Unforgotten.

I can’t believe next week’s could be the last ever episode 😭

butterpuffed · 23/03/2021 08:18

Have I missed something that I should already know about ?! I didn't know why Ram's father didn't want to talk to him and ignored him ?

PintPot · 23/03/2021 08:19

i don't think Cassie would have given out Dean's address either - and I don't think the sudden introduction of his brother is a coincidence. I wonder if Dean's criminal brothers wanted to make sure Dean didn't start investigating him from the inside, so set up the meeting between Walsh and the car full of coppers, knowing Ram would impulsively go after him. The brother(s) then shoved Dean's pen in Walsh's head, as a way of implicating him - but then offered to make the head 'go away' in return for silence/co operation. Maybe the muvver isn't as benign as she looks?

But my money's on Fiona as the driver of the car at the end. She's got absolutely nothing left to lose - unless she also forgot to tell her husband and kids she has unpaid parking tickets, in which case Shocked Husband will probably check his voice mail to hear "AND I READ THE KIDS' DIARIES, AND BY THE WAY I'VE NEVER HAD CAR INSURANCE.'

Oldbutstillgotit · 23/03/2021 08:23

Does anyone know the name of the actor who plays Dean’s Mum ? I didn’t catch it when the credits went up and it is annoying me !

drinkplease · 23/03/2021 08:34

Kate Williams

SingToTheSky · 23/03/2021 08:38

Kate Williams. She was familiar to me too despite not really watching anything she’s been in - must have seen bits of eastenders.
The IMDb app/site is great for looking up previous work and is a bit safer for avoiding spoilers than Google (although sometimes “number of episodes” gives things away)

Great pen summary! Logically it would be Ram’s pen if the others still have theirs from graduation. But yes easily replaced and although they are high quality I’m surprised Liz and Dean would want to keep using them if they reminded them of that time.

I felt awful for Dean when he was sobbing and in a way it felt like such a waste - the family hated him for being a policeman but he didn’t even end up being one. But hypocritical though that he hasn’t actually been clean this whole time, doing smuggling (good point re Felix maybe being one of the brothers). You’d think he would be completely the other extreme, but the temptation was obviously too much.

Cowbells · 23/03/2021 08:42

I think it was Dean. Found Walsh and stabbed him - he knows from his dodgy family how to improvise a weapon. Then Ram finds Walsh and tries to resus. Or may have been Fiona in panic mode - she was so keen to give a detailed confession but she's a compulsive liar.

I also wonder if, whoever did it, Ram will be framed for it, so his race-card anxiety was for a reason all along.

And maybe Cass and dad will be reunited before she dies. But maybe not. It's all about parents failing their children.

RoyalCorgi · 23/03/2021 08:45

I think Ram is too obvious a suspect even though Fiona's statement seems to implicate him.

And we know Fiona is a liar.
