It’s cold, dark and there’s a pandemic but one bright light is the new series of drag race tomorrow. The last series was so joyful and really put British drag back on the map. I hope this series is just as good

Already love Ginny Lemon, who are your picks to win

OP posts:

Thanks for explaining @HomeschooIerRockthemicrophone. I did wonder about it. I love the show and had never heard the fishy thing often mentioned on Mnet. Now I know why.🤣

iklboo · 23/01/2021 18:01

@Cheesypasta - I think the prize difference is due to it being on the BBC, so no advertising or sponsorship allowed. People would probably complain about 'TV licence payers' money' being used as prizes. I do think they could do better than a Ru Peter Badge though!

So they did realise it was highly misogynistic and offensive to women and stopped using it on a popular TV show.

Good Smile

Although still popular enough in the drag world to get mentioned on a prime time comedy TV show. How very dare women 'get their knickers in a twist' about offensive tropes being used against them in the name of 'entertainment'. Hysterical, I tell you, hysterical...

BrightYellowDaffodil · 23/01/2021 19:52

Although the term is considered to be a compliment among Drag Queens, it is often considered to be an insult among non-drag women.

That just goes to show that it’s all about the context and intention. It’s said as a compliment, but taken as an insult by those determined to be offended by drag.

Who do people think might make top 4? Any standouts?

Veronica Green, definitely, and Ginny Lemon, with Asstina and probably Ellie Diamond, I think. Probably between Veronica and Asstina as winner, much as I‘d love it to be Ginny.

jet this was moved by the OP from AIBU to Telly Addicts so that fans could discuss the show. I can talk to you til the cows come home about words, etymology, interpretations but the bottom line remains - this is a thread for fans so please stop trying to derail it. All the threads remain in feminism - you can froth over there to your heart's content. Here you go:

Anybody else watching both new series and confused as anything for who is in which? Just me??
I keep thinking Tina Burner is in the UK version.

LakeGeneva · 23/01/2021 20:07

non-drag women.

Confused
HomeschooIerRockthemicrophone · 23/01/2021 20:09

Just you! Grin Wink
Nah, I watch with DD so make sure I learn the casts like a nerd for when she bombards me with observations/asks who I like best (Rusical - none of them!). I loved the reveals so much though - it comes from being obsessed with dresses that magically change.

(1.06) (1.40) all of it!

So I did love the reveal where it went from scarecrow to tin man

iklboo · 23/01/2021 20:20

Sooooooo - just between us Squirrel Friends....

Which queens are coming to your Drag Dinner? Maximum FIVE. From Canada, USA & UK versions

iklboo · 23/01/2021 20:29

Sorry - posted too soon. I think maybe:

Jan
Crystal Methyd
The Vivienne
Heidi N Closet
Vanjee

HomeschooIerRockthemicrophone · 23/01/2021 20:33
  1. Courtney Act
  2. Divina de Campo (and her sister)
  3. Rita Baga
  4. Bob the drag queen or Bianca del Rio
  5. Jujubee

Can I have Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman too?

iklboo · 23/01/2021 20:35

@HomeschooIerRockthemicrophone - you can, but he's not very popular with the contestants in Canada! Grin

HomeschooIerRockthemicrophone · 23/01/2021 20:35

I know you said five but can I hire Derrick Barry to sing between courses?

HomeschooIerRockthemicrophone · 23/01/2021 20:36

Ooh, why's that?

iklboo · 23/01/2021 20:37

Oooh - TV idea:

COME DRAG WITH ME

MN fans take it in turn hosting Queens who will score the fan on Creativeness, Uniqueness, Nerve & Talent of their menu. Fan gets glammed over by Queen of her choice. Winner gets a Ru Peter badge and some accessories. (If you see this on future you saw it here first).

iklboo · 23/01/2021 20:38

He was apparently brutal & really scathing to the Canadian contestants without having the 'background' to make the comments. He seemed to be going for Simon Cowell but missed the mark and just came off nasty.

orangejuicer · 23/01/2021 20:44

DDC
Cheryl Hole
Jujubee
Nina West
Monet Xchange

HomeschooIerRockthemicrophone · 23/01/2021 20:47

I do like the round when they have superfans - Janet the Planet was fabulous. My menu would score poorly on all accounts if I had to actually make it. I would serve (see what I did there?)

starter: tuna on a plate (yep, I just went there)
main: surf n turf (okay, am just goading now)
pudding: a rainbow cake with a surprise reveal

Keep the Ru Peter badge and give me some duh-llars
I would want to be made over by Gottmik from the current competitors. Michelle Visage had silvery eye make-up today which reminded me of hers and went very well with her suit and mallen streak (showing my age there!)

SionnachRua · 23/01/2021 21:05

Kameron Michaels - I stan her hard. Plus she's a gamer, we'd get on great.

Cynthia Lee Fontaine - Cucu deserves every happiness!

Tammie Brown - would entertain us all.

Kasha Davis - another sweetheart, would make a good cocktail.

Sasha Velour - that MIND.

Honourable mentions to Jan, Shuga and Nina Flowers.

@Biscoffaddict

I’ve also never met a Drag Queen who hates women, or a gay man for that matter. In school I had a couple of male friends who it turned out were gay (always obvious with hindsight) and they were always more comfortable around the girls. Even now most of them only have family friends.

I think a lot of posters on MN genuinely hate all men, and include gay men. My jaw was on floor reading the last drag bashing thread where several posters compared drag to the Black and White Minstrels, they were completely serious as well! Men have worn make up and ‘cross dressed’ for want of a better word for centuries.

Hear, hear.

I've met two drag queens, one is a very good mate, the other performed in our pub and needed someone to play their music set and the original person pulled out do has become a friend. When DD came out, both were amazing. Offered phone numbers and email for chats and questions for DD and us as parents. No negative behaviour at all.
ClosestThingToCrazy · 25/01/2021 17:09

One of the secret celebrity Drag Races had three female contestants, but only their mini challenge involved becoming drag kings, the maxi was the standard look like a drag queen thing.

wildthingsinthenight · 25/01/2021 23:42

Loving UK version and can't wait for Snatch Game. Not a fan of the US version.
Sad about the first evictees though. Loved them both!
Can someone please explain the appeal of Ginny Lemon? I just don't get it??

Veronica Green is fantastic and I also like Tayce so far. And Ellie D

HomeschooIerRockthemicrophone · 28/01/2021 21:39

I think Ginny Lemon is meant to be old school, almost panto, comedy queen - similar to Baga, but Baga may brush up better in photo shoots.
I don't know their act but guess they MC? Do they appeal to me, no, not really as I don't go for gurny, acting boss-eyed or hyper loud/brash but she is popular with many.
All that said, you have Laurence Chaney to do loudish humour. Tia Coffee made me laugh quite a bit in tonight's (they remind me facially of Maya Rudolph).
SPOILER episode 3 follows
Did the right person go tonight? No - despite my DD denouncing the anime as not anime (certainly not recognised as such by the judges either and got a meh response from Ru before it was even made) - that outfit was still properly designed and sewn.
The other two in the bottom should have been bottom two for lack of sewing and I would have saved the same person who was saved despite the so-called courage of the other to do padding.
(Obvious who I am referring to but not naming just in case you missed the spoiler, although has in fact aired this evening).
What say you all? Robbed? Not robbed? Deliberately Produced Shock Boot? Future all-stars contestant?

HomeschooIerRockthemicrophone · 28/01/2021 21:47

Oh and whilst they come across as nice enough out of drag, I hate Sister's looks. Tia might be basic, but Ginny/Sister and Bimini are not that much better. I also, like others, wonder how much budget and own wardrobe has to do with it (although kudos to Ellie for showing if you do want it badly enough, you'll do extra shifts at maccy Ds to get the clobber or materials to make your own). Veronica's might have been lined but wasn't all that. All that said, Asstina did not put their money where their mouth was in terms of gonna slay.
