Looking forward to Drag Race uk tomorrow

It’s cold, dark and there’s a pandemic but one bright light is the new series of drag race tomorrow. The last series was so joyful and really put British drag back on the map. I hope this series is just as good

Already love Ginny Lemon, who are your picks to win

Confused

It's definitely on iPlayer, that's where I watched it from today!

I'm surprised the evictee was Cherry Valentine, I thought she was pretty good. Certainly better than Lawrence who I felt desperately sorry for with their fear of performing...but surely performing is what drag queens do? Much as Lawrence can be good I feel her insecurities are going to get the better of her sooner or later (that and the fact that she has a tendency to tip into out-and-out bitchiness).

I didn't like A'Whora last week and I like her even less now. But I'm more and more in awe of Veronica Green, whose robot/housewife outfit was awesome as was her rusical performance, and Ginny Lemon who absolutely embodies what drag is to me, in that it's naturally progressed from the music halls (absolute hats off for referencing Vesta Tilley) and traditional burlesque with a bit of pantomime thrown in. Ginny is that in SPADES, plus she seems a fundamentally decent sort (hats off again for handing A'Whora her arse for bitching about Asstina last week). Lemon for the win!

That's what I said to DD.
Delighted for Veronica Green.

Yawn

Yes it's not on iPlayer

It definitely is as that's how I watched it!

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 23/01/2021 08:32

Yes its on iplayer!

God Ru's Lawrence chaney accent is so annoying, but I look on it as a good thing that Ru likes him. She doesn't do it to Ellie because Ellie accent is different. Its scottish, but not weegie and less broad that Lawrence's. Love them both however!!

I thought Cherry did ok, not amazing, but ditto with quite a few other queens tbh. It was a week where Veronica did very well but everyone else did ok. Shame, as Cherry was going to do Gillian Mckeith or Nikki Graham for snatch game!

Veronica was so good this week, I'm glad she showed the other queens as I felt a lot of them dismissed her last week.

Loved Ellie diamonds lion look, she reminds me so much of Trixie mattel who DH and I both love!!

Continuing to ignore anyone trying to derailing the thread. Yawn.

Notanotherteenmovie1 · 23/01/2021 08:33

So glad to see this thread. According to most of Mumsnet, those who partake in drag are evil and hate women and all want to take the piss out of them.

iklboo · 23/01/2021 11:44

I quite enjoyed last night's episode. Felt sorry for Cherry, definitely not bottom two for us. Loved Veronica showing what she can do. The robot outfit was brilliant. And I still don't like Bimini (sorry). Asstina is a pain in it as well.

I still can't call a winner though.

JaneJeffer · 23/01/2021 14:37

Correct.

DioneTheDiabolist · 23/01/2021 14:43

It's not most of MNet, just the ones who get their kicks from scolding other women @Notanotherteenmovie1.🙄

Ah that sort just want to LARP as victims I think and have latched on to drag queens as their oppressors.

Still unclear on a winner here as well though I know Cherry wasn't my pick to leave...and I was so glad to see Veronica showing a bit of fire.

Stellaris22 · 23/01/2021 15:30

I thought the lip synch song choice was odd and didn't work. I'm bad at remembering names! But how amazing was the robot costume? I was blown away.

I'm getting the feeling that the judges are being extra critical about shop bought outfits this year and wanting more originality.

iklboo · 23/01/2021 16:15

I get the impression those who say drag artists are evil & take the piss out of women have never watched Drag Race and are basing their opinion on Cissy & Ada. I'd be happy if I looked half as good as some of the contestants do.

It's fine if you dine like drag. The posters on this TV thread about 'looking forward to Drag Race' DO. I refuse to be castigated for having a different opinion. I'd rather watch Drag Race than bilge like Love Island (promoting promiscuity, body image issues & shallow behaviour) or scripted 'reality shows' (promoting bitchiness, shallow behaviour & cosmetic surgery as the 'norm'.

I've never met an 'evil drag queen who hates women'. Ever. Quite the opposite in fact.

HomeschooIerRockthemicrophone · 23/01/2021 16:33

On the contrary - bizarrely on all the drag-bashing threads, the Cissy and Ada characters are often held up as examples of gentle comedy emulating a real type of Northern woman (I am Northern and eye-rolling at that argument) Confused whereas drag queens are using fish for vaginal smell (rather than fishtail/fishy), represent a terrible parody (panto dames and Lily Savage get a pass but anyone else nope) and are supporting the cliche of femme as heels, makeup, dresses. That quite clear puns of Cheryl Hole (girls aloud tribute iirc) Awhora etc appal. Hoose! Wink

iklboo · 23/01/2021 16:36

Aw you beat me to the full Hoose! Do I get the box of teabags as the consolation prize (genuine prize at local community centre bingo when I were a nipper) Grin

Jetatyeovilaerodrome · 23/01/2021 16:38

Is 'Fishy' still a thing on Drag Race? Or have they realised that being that blatantly offensive towards women's isn't a good look? Hmm

HomeschooIerRockthemicrophone · 23/01/2021 16:42

I haven't heard the term in ages but no, it doesn't offend me, I love a fishtail dress Grin
Anyone seen the US episode this morning? I called winner and evictee correctly for the first time ever!

BrightYellowDaffodil · 23/01/2021 17:01

I loved Cissy and Ada, I can still watch their sketches and roar with laughter. Les Dawson was a genius.

Biscoffaddict · 23/01/2021 17:09

I’ve also never met a Drag Queen who hates women, or a gay man for that matter. In school I had a couple of male friends who it turned out were gay (always obvious with hindsight) and they were always more comfortable around the girls. Even now most of them only have family friends.

I think a lot of posters on MN genuinely hate all men, and include gay men. My jaw was on floor reading the last drag bashing thread where several posters compared drag to the Black and White Minstrels, they were completely serious as well! Men have worn make up and ‘cross dressed’ for want of a better word for centuries.

Apparently

rupaulsdragrace.fandom.com/wiki/RuPaul%27s_Drag_Race_Dictionary#F

Fishy
adj. A term used to describe a drag queen who looks extremely feminine, or one who convincingly resembles a cis woman. The term is a reference to the scent of a vagina, which is colloquially likened to the smell of fish. Although the term is considered to be a compliment among Drag Queens, it is often considered to be an insult among non-drag women.

HomeschooIerRockthemicrophone · 23/01/2021 17:40

Not since way back - serving fish/serving fish on a platter/tuna on a plate, last used by RuPaul about seven years ago. One queen released a song called Uptown Fish. Never heard it used in UK version but iirc it was used in a drag jargon bbc quiz and big, fat quiz of the year which got a few posters' knickers in a twist on here.

HomeschooIerRockthemicrophone · 23/01/2021 17:41

That is a fandom site not officially linked to the show drome
I digress. Who do people think might make top 4? Any standouts?

iklboo · 23/01/2021 17:47

No real stand outs yet and I think there's still scope for 'surprise' exits. The Snatch Game should give more of an idea I think. Some of the Look queens can't cope with ad libbing too well.

Cheesypasta · 23/01/2021 17:57

Have only watched the UK version but looking at the listings the US winners get a £100K prize! Seems a bit stingy then that the UK winners get a dream Hollywood trip, which probably won't even go ahead under current conditions.

I enjoyed the second episode and Rats but Memory was a terrible lip syncing choice. Neither did well with it and that wasn't really their fault.
