It’s cold, dark and there’s a pandemic but one bright light is the new series of drag race tomorrow. The last series was so joyful and really put British drag back on the map. I hope this series is just as good

I’ve worked out why I haven’t really warmed to Lawrence.

He is undoubtedly good at what he does, but he’s got that slightly needy/cynical thing going on: “I speak for all the misfits like you, do be sure to visit my YouTube channel and Instagram page, won’t you? Then I can monetise you”.

He also seems wary of the other queens, as if he’s worried about being eclipsed. Contrast that with Bianca del Rio: from day one she was all generosity towards the other contestants because she could afford to be.

What I love about drag race is the glamour and the humour. My favourite queens (Bianca del Rio, Katya, Manila Luzon, Adore Delano, Alaska, Divina de Campo, Baga) have all faced challenges in their lives but have risen above them with intelligence, wit and a fierce attitude.

That’s not to say that I think that the queens should never show vulnerability, that’s what makes them human, but not one of the performers I name above trade on self pity and none of them have sought to set themselves up as some sort of counsellor or friend to confused young people by way of a channel through which they make money. They are all to busy being fabulous and brightening up our lives. Tia Kofi for the win!

I wonder if they would ever do a reverse version - with women trying to look like men? Fake beards instead of fake boobs... would people want to watch it?

I really enjoyed the first episode. But I thought they shouldn't have sent either of the two in the lip synch battle home. I wanted to see them both for another week. Disappointing for me.

I don't know but DD does drag. They are usually quite neutral, black clothes, bit of a Japanese goth fusion going on. When they do drag though, polar opposite, glam, sparkly, girly, huge wig, full on make up, loud and people they've known since they were 7 didn't realise that was who it was in the outfit, was hilarious at a party before the world went mad with Covid. (I also like it as it's like I've got a little bit of my girly girl back for a few hours, I totally respect their exploring their pronouns and who they wish to be but I do miss what came before a little). You do now have a few female and/or non-binary drag queens. Scaredy Cat from last series girlfriend was also a drag act.

You're talking about drag kings there, it is a thing already. Look up Landon Cider, Mo B Dick or Spikey von Dykey to get an idea of them.

I'd love to see a drag king season tbh, it would be a nice change from the norm. Not sure if a joint season (queens and kings) would work but I'm open to it!

Agree about Ginny. We said it looked like Steve Pemberton, Timmy Mallett & Biggins all had a baby with Su Pollard.

When I first saw Lawrence I wasn’t sure but as the show went on she grew on me.

I agree Sirzy. No real stand outs yet. I'm hoping Lawrence doesn't get stuck in his own head because he'll probably do well at The Snatch Game.

Veronica could do both roles in Little Shop Of Horrors! So gawky out of drag but fab in gear.

So wonderful to have this back at this crappy point in the Covid bleakness.

I am loving Asstina (very deserved winner) and Veronica the most. But what I really liked about the episode was the UK Gay Icons task. I thought everyone did it so well, and did their icons proud.

It's a shame Joe went, I think they would have brought a lot of creativity in the coming weeks and something a bit different to the end-of-the-pier stuff that British drag queens can tend to over rely on.
Next week is Rusical, my least favourite week, but it will be interesting to hear who can sing.

Last year a mate knew 90% of the queen's so we had an inside knowledge of who would struggle and who wouldn't. This year we've no idea. We love Baga though, but they're not well liked in Drag circles. Wasn't a fan of Michelle being a bit down on Lilly Savage though, now there is a legend

Yeah I've a few mates in drag circles and apparently it's the attitude. Not a likeable personality (but then we must bear in mind the widespread and well loved bitchy behaviour which is part of the fabulous world of drag). I found them great but then, it's like anyone in the public eye, the public persona can be different to the private one.

I can't bring myself to like Bimini yet.

Veronica is the British Jinkx Monsoon and Tia is the British Katya (I have decided).

Plus, Lawrence is a miserable arse!

Think both Cherry and Tayce were going for the Latrice Royale ‘forget the tricks and show the emotion’ vibe in the lip sync, and it kind of worked, but nobody emotes like mama Latrice!

Loved the runway, hated the rusical, crap song for a lipsync. Felt for Cherry - they might not have been standout but nor were they bottom 2 for me.
