It’s cold, dark and there’s a pandemic but one bright light is the new series of drag race tomorrow. The last series was so joyful and really put British drag back on the map. I hope this series is just as good

Already love Ginny Lemon, who are your picks to win

Oh, I came here to discuss the show and see it's been derailed.

I'd ask if those people could go away so we can happily discuss the show but that won't happen.

Or maybe a new thread can be started so this can be abandoned to people who don't understand the point of a thread to discuss a program.

Loved Lawrence!
Thought Ellie was quite jealous/ envious of Lawrence.

Totally ignoring the derailment....

Totally ignoring the derailment....

Good policy.

Both Ellie and Laurence appear on a BBC documentary (it’s on iPlayer) called Mother Tuckers of Glasgow, about the Scottish drag scene. Laurence gets much more coverage than Ellie, who features as ‘somebody Laurence tours with and goes to drag conventions with’. So maybe Ellie feels as if she has to prove herself more?

I guess the thing that concerns me about this being a step up in drag - and I do think it's an upgrade from season 1 - is does that mean the queens are spending huge amounts of money on it? I know it's very common for the US girls to go into debt, which is a real shame for the early outs who don't get to showcase their pieces. Honey Davenport spent 20k when she was homeless I believe?

And then you have the inequality between queens who have little money (ChiChi drVayne getting read all season springs to mind) vs someone like Gigi who practically has a personal designer at hand (her mum). Or someone like Violet Chachki who comes from money up against Monique, who couldn't spend much. Idk. I know a lot of the seasoned queens are bringing things they've had for years but it's such an uneven playing field.

Stellaris22 · 15/01/2021 18:20

I also noticed the 'may the best drag queen win' change. I love Michelle Visage so always glad to see her.

I'm not sure about Ginny Lemon but thought Lawrence was great. Only downside is having to wait a week between episodes.

Kittytheteapot · 15/01/2021 18:28

I'm not up on the names yet, and know nothing about the drag culture beyond what I picked up from series 1, but my immediate favourite was the one who got the first Ru Peter badge.

I didn't like the Su Pollard/Big Bird from Sesame St look a like. If they are going to say fancy a slice at every opportunity, it is going to become very draining very quickly. Someone compared them to Baga from Series 1. Yes, another one I would gladly have seen the back of earlier.

For me, the interest lies in their back stories and the insecurity that so many of them seem to feel underneath the act. I find that fascinating.

CrazyToast · 15/01/2021 18:29

Yes! I know someone in this series and am super excited to watch them.

There is the new US one too, so much escapism!

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 15/01/2021 21:19

Come on @CrazyToast, you can't leave it there, come on, spill the tea!!!

Thank you Iamthewombat, yes Veronica, and agree with the 3 amp fuse thing though, hoping for more out her though personality wise, she's very pretty, that would've been gorgeous with a cape!

Thats interesting about Ellie and Lawrence, will go and take a look at mother tuckers.

I think Ginny Lemon is too manic for me, a Cross between timmy mallet and sue polard!

Tiktokersmiracle · 16/01/2021 08:07

I managed to bribe DD to do her physics lesson by showing them ihad recorded this
We loved Lawrence straight away, really warm and funny.
Joe black was a bit chip on shoulder of being a self proclaimed legend so wasn't bothered they went
The one in the sparkly robin hood- what. A. Meanie! DD was not impressed, but likes This Kofi.
The Niaomi looks were stunning.
I'm once again ashamed at my inability to even stand in agony heel when these amazing people can strut, dance and slut drop in them
Was also good to explain to DD about the lack of black allies or openly gay people in the UK, Dusty Springfield being a legend, Freddie and that video being banned in the eighties as well as Relax too.
I'm just looking forward to It's A Sin even more now.

Biancadelrioisback · 16/01/2021 08:33

Huge fan of drag (hence the username).
Loved the first episode, although I keep reading that people didn't agree with the outcome?
From the lipsync I deffo thing it was right

MsMiaWallace · 16/01/2021 09:22

@TheLevyEyebrowsFancIub do you live Mansfield way?
Your right though. They're stuck in the 70s around there (old miner/pit village mentality).
God there is some shade on this thread!
Why do people need to come on to just belittle others' views on something?
It's hardly 'love thy neighbour' is it?

Drag has changed. It's not about taking the piss out of women. A lot of them don't shave anymore & have chest hair hanging out or beards on their faces.
I don't recall seeing a woman like this recently?
They are generally true artists. The make up & costumes they create are amazing.
It can hardly be likened to blacking up.

However even from back in the day I wouldn't have said Lily Allen was offensive to women.
She was awesome & anyone would want Lily by their side to back them up.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 16/01/2021 10:14

I thought maybe the pink pajamas should have been in the bottom, but the lipsync result was spor on, Joe Black just gave up and didn't seem to try at all!

TheLevyEyebrowsFancIub · 16/01/2021 10:15

I'm just looking forward to It's A Sin even more now.
Me, too. I preferred the title The Boys but understand why they had to change it (haven't seen The Boys on Amazon but it's some kind of superhero thing?). They were boys though, so, so many, cut off in their prime.
Mia nail, hammer. Damn, and I liked this name too! Wink Did you mean Lily Savage?! Although, unlike many on MN, I have a soft spot for LA who gets berated on here periodically.

MsMiaWallace · 16/01/2021 10:16

LOL yes I meant Lily Savage!
Sorry was also feeding baby at the time.
Although Lily Allen is ok.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 16/01/2021 10:21

Joe Black just gave up and didn't seem to try at all!

I quite agree, there was just a lot of stalking about and pulling faces. I mean, it was alright but not in the same league as her rival (whose name I forget) who really went for it. To do those moves in that outfit? She deserved to win!

I think Sister Sister (pink pyjamas and strange mouth makeup) might be next?

Who was the one in the green Robin Hood outfit who said to the other one “I thought it would be you in the bottom two” and said her hair was “thirsty”? That wasn’t shade, it was just being unpleasant.

TheLevyEyebrowsFancIub · 16/01/2021 10:23

I think Joe was old-school. As I said, he started off with verve and reminded me of Holly Johnson in his delivery. Or Terence Stamp in Priscilla. But the waiting for an elevator joke went flat and by that point, Bimini was being more athletic. Joe was never going to be able to slut-drop in his dresses and, according to him, at his age. But I didn't agree with many of the decisions on Drag Race Canada for the same reason: sometimes face and stillness are more dramatic to me than gymnastics, it's just the latter are seen to be wanting it more/fighting harder. Don't get me wrong, I love me a perfectly-timed slut drop but sometimes it's the feel of a song and I thought Joe was fabulous. Also the interior of the Royal Pavillion is gold and their Bowie look was Life on Mars so still think wuz robbed. Not sure if any 'deserved' to go though - I liked both runways very much.

TheLevyEyebrowsFancIub · 16/01/2021 10:31

That was Awhora Daffodil to Tia (Robin to Marian) - it was unnecessary as Tia did make me laugh with her ''No reveal -Soz!'' entry Grin and whilst I noticed her fluffing her hair a lot, I didn't think her first look was noticeably first boot all over it. Not sure of the edit though - Awhora had said when they were discussing who would leave first she thought it might be Tia or Asttina iirc so she probably fessed up so not to be two-faced about it?
I need to cancel my WoW direct debit - I am never going to get through the Dutch one - not because of the subtitles but because the buffering is insane! Have a great day all of you, see you Thursday! x

BrightYellowDaffodil · 16/01/2021 10:41

I absolutely agree that less can be more but Joe Black just lacked...something. Tying with a bit of an attitude of being above everyone else as an “old timer pro” meant that it just didn’t come off well.

DeadButDelicious · 16/01/2021 11:12

Hello my people!

Loving the new series, more than a bit disappointed that Joe is gone, I've been following him and his partner (Arran Shurvinton, who does a fabulous Nosferatu character) for a while and was really looking forward to seeing his snatch game. I agree he gave up a bit in the lip sync, but IMO I don't think he should have been there. I would have had sister sister and Bimini with Bimini going, I mean really it was a cut up t shirt. No.

But such is drag race! And seeing as Joe is gone I am nailing my colours firmly to the Ginny Lemon mast. I think she's fabulous! I love that she wore crocs in her meet the queens photo shoot. Grin

Smallgoon · 16/01/2021 13:20

Wasn't the biggest fan of Tia Kofi. Maybe it was the editing, but I found her to be quite unnecessarily bitchy.

Smallgoon · 16/01/2021 13:23

I do really like Lawrence. But there are clearly issues with a lack of self esteem which will rear their head over the course of the series. I imagine there will be some self sabotage along the way as a result, but I do think Lawrence is hilarious.

Lolly49 · 16/01/2021 14:05

I am sure that Ginny Lemon is Steve Pemberton taking the piss.
Love Lawrence.

Aww I love Lilly Allen too. I don't get the hate really
MsMiaWallace · 16/01/2021 14:58

I like Lawrence. He reminds me of Lewis Capaldi!!
