Anyone else watching?

New series started tonight. Bonkers toff from SW London wants to convert a building in a cemetery.

I don't think I've ever cheered on a couple of house builders quite so much. And the guy is an amazing lateral thinker in coming up with those solutions. And their love warmed my cynical old heart.

SlantyBaws · 13/01/2021 22:30

Oh wasn't she adorable? What a lovely house and a great project.

Lovely people and a lovely property.

EssentiallyDelighted · 13/01/2021 23:49

I haven't watched for years but was channel hopping tonight and started watching about 20 mins in. Oh my goodness, what a story. About 2/3 of the way through I said to DH I'm not sure if I can watch this, getting too emotional, but I'm glad I stuck with it, what an amazing result and what a lovely couple they are.

YourWurstNightmare · 14/01/2021 13:04

Catching up on my lunch break. So happy for them.

I'm sure Kevin and the crew had Covid tests, but I wish Kevin had been wearing a mask and gloves on his final visit. Georgie's health is so precarious. I was cringing every time he touched a railing or door handle!

SoupDragon · 14/01/2021 13:07

I bet they dipped everyone in bleach beforehand and then cleaned thoroughly afterwards. There is no way they would have taken any risks (or rather made them take any risks that the couple thought unacceptable).

I think Kevin said on something like the One Show that he has been travelling about in his camper van rather than staying in hotels for this.

AuldFox · 14/01/2021 13:15

I’ve actually liked both episodes so far, good start to this series. Lovely couple this week, was properly rooting for them. Now that’s a husband who knows how to get shit done!

Toddlerteaplease · 14/01/2021 20:30

Catching up with the cemetery lodge. Bonkers doesn't even cut it. I'm not sure I'd want to be his girlfriend with that attitude to money. It would be terrifying!

MrsOctober · 14/01/2021 22:00

I know exactly where this is. It's the lodge at Fulham Cemetery on Fulham Palace Road.

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 14/01/2021 23:04

The barn conversion was gorgeous, they were a lovely couple. I was worried there was going to be a sad update at the end, I hope they get to enjoy their home for many, many years.

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/01/2021 11:40

I don’t usually watch but barn was local

Looked amazing and such a lovely couple

But yes why didn’t they all wear masks due to their health

Did they do in budget

Assume run out as spare bedrooms not finished

longtompot · 15/01/2021 11:55

@onemouseplace I agree, this sort of episode is Grand Designs at its best. Not just throwing money at a project. The pub he and his dad refurbished was beautiful too.

@Blondeshavemorefun I think they said they were at £275,000 so a bit over and it will be more to finish those other rooms.

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/01/2021 11:59

Thanks so only a tad over that’s good

SoupDragon · 15/01/2021 12:42

I liked the contrast to last week's. That's the good thing about Grand Designs - you get everything from the real "build it themselves" self builder to the ones who throw money at it and everything in between.

EssentiallyDelighted · 15/01/2021 13:26

I guess there's no rush to finish guest rooms at the moment Sad.

Directionerforever · 16/01/2021 12:14

Just watched this weeks, had a little sniffle at the end. The love between the two of them was lovely and what an amazingly resourceful guy he was. Like everyone else I was dreading the bad news that I thought was inevitable.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 16/01/2021 12:26

I loved this episode. Such a lovely couple. I hope they’ve many many happy years in their house together.

Hohofortherobbers · 16/01/2021 12:59

Really good article in the mail today about the first episode, the converted Chapel

cerealgamechanger · 16/01/2021 15:46

Will be watching this tonight.

As an aside, wasn't Kevin in trouble for being part of a housing scheme that folded because of mismanagement? Surprised he's still heading the show and passing comments on other people's budgets when he struggled running his own business for the same.

jamesfailedmarshmallows · 16/01/2021 18:11

Just catching up with Justin, his toffness is just so utterly endearing. "This is what I think a real house looks like" Oh Justin, how the other half live!
On a side note his 5 year old goes to boarding school, is that even legal?!

SoupDragon · 16/01/2021 18:29

He wasn't 5 by the time he went to boarding school. Still only 8 or 9 I think though.

jamesfailedmarshmallows · 16/01/2021 18:40

Yes Soup, I've just got to the bit where George is now 8. I assume though that Justin knew that boarding school was on the cards, so not sure why he seems a bit perplexed about building a big house that now isn't going to get much use.

jamesfailedmarshmallows · 16/01/2021 18:53

I love the way Kevin bowed to Hideko and she didn't respond Grin Poor girl looked as if she'd been brought in off the street as an extra, and wasn't exactly sure what to say.

Toddlerteaplease · 17/01/2021 19:51

Yes. She seemed quite awkward. I doubt it will last!

SoupDragon · 20/01/2021 21:39

I've not felt any kind of connection or emotion for this week's build.
