I’ve been waiting for this all year. It drops on Christmas Day. Apparently the second series has already been commissioned, so it must be pretty good.

I would love a Heyer dramatisation or 20, as long as they don't sex them up too much.

PeteringOut · 28/12/2020 21:01

direction that makes sense as I haven’t seen any of those so no wonder I didn’t clock the company. I looked on their website and was none the wiser 😂

Oldsu · 29/12/2020 01:17
@GaryTheDemon Shonda Rhimes is the creator of shows like Grey’s Anatomy, How to get away with murder, For the people and Scandal. She’s a crowd pleasing serial drama maker and to get original made for Netflix content from the shondaland stable is probably a bit of a coup.
As soon as I knew it was a Shonda Rhimes production I knew it would have strong black woman characters in it, that's why I love everything she does, and of course Regé-Jean Page who plays the Duke was in 'for the people' and yes he is hot

Friendsoneuptown · 29/12/2020 08:22

I’ve only just started to watch and love it. The costumes, jewellery and sets are all visually stunning.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 29/12/2020 08:27

Watched the credit, saddo that I am and had to laugh there was someone in the production whose title was, 'Intimacy Coach...' Grin

VenusClapTrap · 29/12/2020 08:28

I persevered and it got better. I was glad I stuck with it because the last couple of episodes featured lots of scenes in the Hastings’ London house, which was filmed in the place I got married! Lots of happy memories. We had our drinks reception in the courtyard where the final ball is held. 😊

diddl · 29/12/2020 08:42

Visually stunning, but pretty formulaic.

trixiebelden77 · 29/12/2020 09:18

I’m enjoying it, it’s fun.

Loving the comments from people who can’t stop themselves from making sure we all understand they’re really into Austen but ‘turning off their brain’ for this.....

😂😂😂😂😂

VenusClapTrap · 29/12/2020 09:30

I do think Harlots was loads better than this though. Better dialogue, characters, plot. Better everything actually.

AnneBoleyn1536 · 29/12/2020 09:34

Yes, Harlots is miles better. No contest.

Grin I love Jane Austen, and less highbrow stuff equally. I enjoyed Bridgerton and loved Harlots.
JustAGirlFromHoe · 29/12/2020 13:15

Also binge watched it, total escapism. Loved it!

Spotted Ned Porteous in it (ex Emmerdale) hope he’s got a bigger part in the 2nd series.

Also agree. Harlots was brilliant.

I turned off my brain in 1993...

What the heck is with the Duke ejaculating in a tissue to stop getting old Daphne pregnant?

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 29/12/2020 16:07

He swore to his father the line would die with him.

So true 😉

I havent seen Harlots, but how can it be better than Bridgerton? It doesn't have the Duke in it...( swoon emoji ) Grin

WhatIsAWeekday · 29/12/2020 19:04

@Goingcrazzy

I'm loving this. Easy on the brain and the colour blind casting is refreshing. Always loved period drama and it's so lovely to be able to visualise myself in this period without the trauma of issues on race, slavery etc. Lovely!
Amen!

I nearly didn't watch it - the picture didn't draw me in and I thought it was going to be the usual.

Well, I finally clicked because I was bored and the first thing I saw was Shondaland! Thought I was in a twilight zone because I never thought I would ever see Shonda Rhimes+Period-style drama. With that alone, I knew this was going to be INTERESTING!

Just finished Episode 1 and have rushed here in search of posts with 'PC gone mad', 'woke', 'diversity gone wrong', etc. Hahaha I know it's coming!

Loved the colours, quite like the Duke (swoon), the eldest Bridgerton, Lady Danbury and her dresses.

The girls are generally plain-looking (much prefer the older women) and I agree with pp who wonders why Daphne is portrayed as such a beauty when she's well...not. Anyway, the story isn't great so far but easy-watch for me.

Yawn to all the sex scenes! Couldn't skip fast enough.

WhatIsAWeekday · 29/12/2020 19:14

Interestingly, I just finished the final episode of 'How to get away with murder' and was looking for what to watch. Guess it's Shonda season for me then Grin

Destinysdaughter · 29/12/2020 20:44

I loved How to get away with murder, and Viola Davis is fab! And there's so many episodes to watch Smile

I liked Harlots too but this is a different kind of pleasure. It's so pleasing to the eye with the clothes and the colours and everything being so clean and bright. Normally I avoid costume dramas because I'm a history buff and find anachronisms annoying but this doesn't even try to be accurate. It's a delight.
Mochudubh · 30/12/2020 19:22

I might be imagining this but I read a biography of Georgette Heyer a few years ago by Jane Aiken Hodge (another author to check out if you enjoy GH)and I think there was something about GH never wanted her books filmed and it was in her contract with her publisher. I may be wrong though.

Mochudubh · 30/12/2020 19:25

Ah, apparently not. As you were,

NaughtipussMaximus · 30/12/2020 20:56

I’m giving the books another go. I’ve decided to accept they’re basically modern romances transposed to the Regency period, rather than actual Regency romances, and handwave away any anachronisms. Even the hero’s name seems wrong for the period (Simon? I appreciate there may have been some Simons among the English upper nobility in this period, but it still jars... something like George or William would have worked better).
